MA/SR and the Rularuu
The Overseers are a bit problematic on anything that relies on Defense for survival. IIRC, they have an obscene ToHit buff going on at all times, something like +100% ToHit.
Best bet is to find lower level ones or just munch insps so that you either deal so much damage they don't have the time to kick your *** or that you outsurvive them through Resistance/Defense.

Actually, their attacks can slow you. So, even if you have a lot of resistance, you'll find that your attacks are not recharging, and you can only stand there. I think Rularuu is designed for teams. If you just want to get the badge solo, the most efficient way is to fight low-level Overseers as suggested.
Hello.
My 50 MA/SR is soft-capped defensively vs all 3 attack types, with Elude only one slotted (took it at 49), but 90%+ defense doesn't seem to matter against Overseers. What is the best technique for surviving battles against these Rularuu Bosses. I'd like to eventually get the badge. Should I be eating large oranges instead? I have ignored regen on this character for his entire life, never needed it, took swift, hurdle, stamina. I can fight all day against most opponents. How do I survive Overseers? I do not want to fight low level ones for the badge. |
Willpower can sort-of handle Overseers, as can Regen. If they're in mixed spawns, though, there's nothing to be done, bring friends.

Or, hunt greys.
Just to say something different here, if you still want to, fight them one on one. Eagle Claw and Cobra Strike em to stun them and, if possible, try to perma-stun them. It requires stacking, but it may be doable. Maybe... stuns might be one of the mezzes they're immune to. Also Crane Kick and Dragon Tail for knockback/down for mitigation, although their unique model and perma-fly doesn't make that as effective as normal, about like knocking back Rikti Drones. Running for cover always works out nicely too. And it needn't be said, since we're Scrappers here, but killing it fast works too.
Also, temporary powers.
Still, grays or teaming are the better options. Controllers can perma-hold 'em for you.
Well. I've tried the perma stun route. It doesn't seem to work too well. The Boss still seems to be able to drop its 3 pets at first opportunity. Then I soon have 4 eyeballs chomping on me at once. Also, do you think the fact that overseer's pets can be dropped right on top of one another working as intended? A master Ill doesn't drop her 3 minions on the same spot. Why is it ok for the overseer?
As a scrapper I switch targets alot. When 3 eyeballs are occupying the same space it makes it impossible to target the one you need.

Long version: Given that an aggro-capped group of level 44 Rularuu can chew through 49's like a group of 50's chew through a 54 AV, you'll want to reconsider not fighting the low levels for the overseer badge.
The Rularuu contain some of the most powerful debuffs in the entire game, and are designed for team combat, and still contain some of the old design traits such as non-positional Psionic attacks. The only reason afformentioned archtypes like Willpower can survive them is due to the Psionic resistance / defense. Something you have to keep in mind when the Rularuu were designed is that only two defense powers in the game could counter their attacks: Dark Armor's Obsidian Shield on scrappers and Stone Armor's Minerals on Tanks.
They were basically designed to chew through everything else, so even if you had an SR with a couple of Force Field defenders behind you or an Empath with Fort, you'd still be chewing dirt on a regular basis.
Like the thread already suggests, you'll want to be hauling along a team-mate, either somebody who can heal you, or somebody who can stack holds.
If you don't have a team-mate, head to Point X-Ray in Firebase Zulu.
I seem to remember having little issue with any of the rularuu when I was working on them for my Overseer badge on my nrg/nrg blaster. Have they changed them recently and made them harder?

For the most part Overseers only spawn in 3 places throughout the Shadow Shard:
Level 44 minus: Point X-Ray - Fire Base Zulu
Level 44 minus: Point Tango - Fire Baze Zulu
Level 50 plus: Storm Palace
(yes, they do spawn elsewhere, but not consistantly if you are hunting them down for the badge, these are best hunt locations)
All spawns in the shadow shard are Hazard Zone Spawns, which means full mob.
You can find small mobs at Point X-Ray with 2 Overseers and one minion, but for the most part, it's 5-8 minions, a couple of lewys, and a boss, and sometimes two bosses.
nothing's changed. But I seriously doubt you were in the Storm Palace doing your hunt on an Energy Energy blaster without getting slaughtered on a regular basis.

The best response to Shop. Save. Rularuu. as an MA/SR is to have a variety of responses to the threat of incoming damage ... rather than just relying on softcapped /SR to get you through everything.
The biggest and best thing you can do to save yourself against Rularuu is to get Aid Self and slot it. Doctored Wounds, Miracle, Numina ... just get Aid Self and slot it up. You're going to need those heals if you want to survive against Rularuu.
Being able to stack stuns against Overseers is a very useful ability. Cobra Strike followed by Eagle's Claw can often give you enough time to whittle down an Overseer pretty well. Thunder Kick (of all things) is also helpful for this, although its Stun Proc is not exactly reliable (enough) for all the time performance ... but *is* something that is very useful when combined with Cobra Strike.
Dragon's Tail IS YOUR FRIEND.
Getting a Hold in your APP can also be rather helpful in neutralizing LTs and Minions to reduce the number of simultaneous hostiles you have to deal with. Both Dark and Fire APPs have Holds to help you out here.
If you're going to chomp Orange Skittles, make sure you have more than ONE handy. You'll either need 2 Tier 3 Orange, or 4 Tier 1 Orange, to cap yourself out on resistances. Best to do this before taking alpha, whenever possible/practical.
Always have an escape route. If you're going to dive into a pile of Rularuu ... always have a plan of escape worked out ahead of time should you need to bail out. I prefer leaping off the floating islands and falling myself. It's easier to travel back without dying, and it brings you less Debt.
Do not underestimate the power of ranged attacks to "pick apart" groups of Rularuu. Use of Corner Pull tactics can often allow you to draw solo hostiles to YOUR location, where you can fight them 1-on-1. This is often better than trying to dive into the middle of a dogpile where you're fighting Many (of them) on One (you). Anything to limit the rate of incoming damage enhances your chances survival. Don't be afraid of making use of the local terrain to Divide and Conquer the forces of Shop. Save. Rularuu.

The short version:
It's not you, it's the Rularuu.
No amount of defense* will stop them from hitting you.
You have to kill them first. It's easier if you bring a team. Even the greys can put the hurt on you if you're not paying attention.
I highly suggest ganking greys for the badge.
*Not technically true, but no amount of defense that it is practical to achieve on a regular basis will do the trick.
