Fire/Psy, dead dom?

I have two perma doms already, I really love playing dominator class and I am a roleplayer, I always go for concept, while trying to make a powerful character.

My two perma doms: Plant/Thorn, easy plantgirl concept, and Earth/Fire, volcano concept.

I was thinking about making the old ultimate farmer dom, fire/psy. But I know they are not the way they used to be with the nerf on PSW. The question is... if I softcap S/L defenses, how good is a fire/psy now, and with enough recharge to put drain psyche at 35s rech, would it be able to solo an AV?

Please, no trolls posting: "Want to kill an AV, get a team, the game is not balanced around soloing them, bla bla bla"

It's challenging to make builds on AT's that weren't supposed to do it, doing it.

It will depend on which AV you choose, but over in the blaster forums Silverado has taken a few of them down, so I know dom's can do it too.

Awhile back there were some posts of various dommies soloing 54 AVs and what not. It can be done - its expensive and the battles are time consuming (stacking mez/and perma killing regen). But you most certainly can do it. Softcapping S/L def is possible - but I haven't tried doing it with keeping up maximium recharge (which would be where the real problem comes in).

You probably don't need to softcap your def if your recharge and mez are high enough. But that's just my opinion. I would focus on recharge more, because if you have anyone locked down and if DP is perma on them that will essentially mean that they aren't regening or attacking you... which you should be able to kill given enough time.

And don't forget, you get two Builds, so you can farm build one, and Solo/team build one....farm builds sometimes have a few powers and stuff, you may not use for IO slotting. And your slotting/IOs may be different for each one.

I still love my fire psi tho after the nerfage. He is just built alittle different. I didn't really utilitze the two build thing when i respec'ed him...don't know what i was thinking at the time.

It's certainly possible to hit perma dom and s/l softcap, which makes for a very powerful toon when you add in high uptime on DP.

That opens up a couple avenues. You can try to overstack its mez protection, which fire is the best at (well if you plan on holding it that is, as a mind can much more easily overstack its confuse protection). This takes a bit of time as you need to land 9 holds. Basically to keep it mezzed you need to chain: hold>attack>hold>attack>etc.

For many of the s/l focuses AV's (provided they don't do massive def debuff) this should work just fine. between your def and DP you will easily live long enough to lock them down.

For non s/l AV's and/or debuffers you'll either need to pound a few purples or pop demonic during the lock down phase.

Or you can just try to tank and spank s/l ones and not bother with trying to hold them, rather just dealing max damage to minimize your exposure time. That said, psi assault doesn't really do very much damage so Char slotted for max hold and well enhanced damage would give you the mez and minimal damage sacrifice. So the straight damage approach would be something I'd recommend more for a fire/fire.

Anyway, heal slotted DP will completely halt their regen while it affects them. Your imps and whatever damage you can squeeze out while mezzing will take them down reasonably quickly. Make sure to use poison ray and you'll want your epic pet out contributing to the kill speed too.

What do you recommend in terms of slotting DP?

I know this is not the forum for that in general, but I was specifically looking for something completely different (Monty Python vague reference not intentional) but regardless, I'd be interested in hearing slotting suggestions for DP, as I have an AR/MM Blaster who recently hit the fun levels..

Yeah I can solo most AVs on a Fire/Psi/Mu. Before the nerf to BotZ I could manage to keep permadom (barely) while having high defenses, not now with the set nerf I can only have the defense and no longer be a permadom. To be honest, the only thing from domination I miss in an AV fight is the mez protection, but that's what BFs are for (and mezzes don't land as often with high defenses anyways)

5 doctor's wounds with focus on recharge and 1 acc IO is pretty common. Or if you are loaded and really want 2.5% more recharge then 5 pieces pvp Heal set+ 1 acc/rech end mod. Provided of course you have decent global acc to help it out. You shouldn't have end issues if you have stamina, passive accolades, and some recovery IO's if you hit 1 target with it.

Slotted with doc wounds makes it a 940% regen debuff*, which will halt the regen of pretty much anything.

*blaster version is weaker than dom version. Slotted the same the /mm version of DP provides a 470% debuff. Still quite valuable though.

Would the tactic be the same vs. only one enemy? IE vs only a Hero? When you can't count on it hitting vs a bunch of easy targets? Just curious....

Posted

DP on AV fights is more of a debuff and should be used offensively. The +regen you get is just a nice added bonus. Recomended tactic is to DP-joust the AV

Thanks for the answers, it helped me to narrow my options and I will stick with /psy for my new toon. But I have another question.

Is Fire the only primary able to stack enough hold to lockdown an AV? The animation time is 1,07 seconds on char, another set with longer animation would suffer with stacking holds quickly, right?

I was thinking about earth or mind in this case. Maybe mind could do it with confuse instead?

Fire and Mind should be the best, as they have the fastest animation holds.

But to throw my 2 cents in, stacking holds on an AV is too much of a hassle. I prefer to DPS them to death (chain consisting of Char>Ring of Fire>Mental Blast + Fire Imps) and just let my defenses keep me alive (same way I do it on my Fire/Ment Blaster)

Thanks Silverado, I might see a mind/psy build. I really don't feel like playing fire/psy anymore >.<

Something about fire actually, not the powerset, but fire itself... I'm not a fiery person :P
