Minimal Effort

It is a lot harder than it looks. I minimized until I went too far, then went back a step. It still seems over-complicated. Perhaps it's better for someone independent of the hero to find his minimum definition.

These are all very cool... Of course Bubba's are the best (though I am most definitely biased on that!)

Bubba - Seriously, very cool and thanks! I suppose it would have been a bit easier if Cae had some kind of logo or something... And I love your personal one.

Airhead - I think you did great on yours.

U-Naught - Don't know your character that well so don't know how well that works but it looks cool...

Flashrains - Again, I think you did great on yours.

Thornster - I think your second two are great!

Me and my laziness

Actually, I really dig that character design!

But my point is more that if the idea is to show the minimalist design and have people recognize which character it is, they sort of have to know the character first to begin with is all... But yeah, if I had known that character, that minimalistic design would have let me know who it was

That worked fine! I scrolled down until the face was off the screen, and all I could see was the black stripes and the logo, and I think just that could do it...either way works, I think.

These are great.
I got 8 of the original nine (to be fair the 9th pre-dates my time on the forums but once I found out who it was I remembered coming across art in her gallery and it does represent her well).

Bubba: You did a great job on yours too... I think the matchstick one really stands out with the shapes and colors and Fenian's really summed her up with minimal info. I had to chuckle at The Lounge Crooner (how could anyone not pick him out lol)... only problem I saw was that VexXxa's not horny enough in your depiction...
wait that sounded bad... ummm she needs like more hornz n stuff?

Flahsrains: Yours is graphically very well done and I recognize the Bullseye#2 chest detail I guess I just don't know the character well enough to associate it with that emblem. (P.S. that dark screen shot of a dark hero taken in the dark didn't help much lol)

Airhead: Your Minimal Effort is really well done man I could've instantly picked it out as your character and the way it's positioned makes it read right away as suit jacket over striped shirt and tie to me. That close up detail that Eddy Swan did of your tie is probably how I recognize it so easily since that tie is not an ingame option.

U-Naught: I get the Dagger pattern and the "Shag" hairstyle but not much else from it... could be that I don't know your character well enough either though. One thought I had that might help would be, if that is the 50/50 facemask, putting a white circle for the eye cutout on the left and a blue circle for the eye on the right would make it more distinguishable.

Thornster: Your last two were the best in my opinion as well but I think if you were to combine them it would really stand out as you... the light image on dark background color scheme of the third and the radiating thorns of the fourth except make the parts depicting his horns and mustache about twice the size and lose the text. Something like this maybe?

(yeah I know graphical works like this are not my strong suit )

...hmmm wonder how one of my heroes might look like this?

Yeah, I just can't stop doing these... btw, if you like these, I'll happily take requests (I can also move to a new thread if you don't want me stealing your thunder, Suichiro). Link goes to DA page with answers if you don't recognize them.

For the new bottom row I'll guess...

Is it just me, or does this slightly remind anyone of the City of Cute project?

Frankly, I like that people are attempting to do their own. I was hoping that's exactly what would happen, seeing as this is a relatively easy thing to approach, while at the same time teaching a lot about basic design and streamlining. It's always the things that we think are the most simple that sometimes wind up being the most complex.

Carry on, good sir.

Yet, you did a smashup job on yours. You've managed to achieve exactly what the exercise was about. Well done.

Wanted to try my hand at some of the ones already done in the thread. Some are definitely harder than others.

These are simpler still, Suichiro, and still evocative.

I see Comrade Hero, VexXxa - of course, Fenian reduced to her hat, and I don't recognize the brown, black and buff... I almost want to say Wolverine, but he doesn't post here.

Hmmmm.

I saw them differently.

I was seeing Comrade Hero, Amerikatt, Fenian and Burnt Matchstick.

But I coud be wrong.

Then again, I'm not familiar with VexXxa's character so that could be right.

Can't stop me now! Decided I'd try stepping it up a little bit with some gradient action. Whoa! Look out!

Nice work on the signature heroes. The Surviving Eight are well represented.

Thanks CR and Suichiro for the kind words!

On Suichiro's last four - I really like Comrade Hero, VexXxa and Fenian. For the last one I prefer Bubba's. I think there can be a little more resemblance to an actual burnt matchstick for instant awareness.

I think Thornster has an iconic character, but it's interesting to see how hard it is to find the essence. The horns-and-moustache version by Thornster got it for me.

I'm realizing that the ones I like best tend to be the ones that could easily be graffitied on a wall or such with just maybe a simple cut out template... Not because I'm all for the tagging of public property but because these ones, done effectively, totally encompass simplicity and identifiability...

CR's Thorny, Suich's Dragonberry or Fenian or VexXxa all really stood out in this regard to me, as well as a few others... A simple background of one color, then a quick spraypaint over a template, and bam!

Actually, with how simple Suich made Fenian's I almost want to go back to her old costume now

Still, many of the more complicated ones are still very cool and appealing... Airheads works so well for me that I don't think he even needs the logo...

Not every design minimizes well. But those that do, work really well.

Yeah, I wasn't happy with my BaBs, so I gave it another shot

I would love to hear which ones are people's favorites, and which ones don't work quite as well. I'm still not really seeing Suichiro's Burnt Matchstick. (And I only recognize the first one of the newest three, but I think I'm just not familiar with the characters overall)

Oh yeah, I suppose my favorites are: Soul Train, Dragonberry, Massacre Melanie, my Fenian, Airhead, Amerikatt, Positron, Citadel, and Suichiro's newest first one. I don't remember the name, but I recognize the character.
