So much for Hero Con this year.

Those of you who might be thinking of Hero Con this year. . . Well think again!

Quote:
Instead of throwing one big event this year that requires a ticket fee and which only a certain amount of players can make it to, we want to offer several in the hope that more of you can make it to at least one of them! So, we are going to forego executing two real-world events for the year like we usually do-- one Meet and Greet (usually at San Diego Comic-Con or PAX West in Seattle) and one Hero-Con (in Northern CA), and instead we’re going to piggyback off of existing conventions and throw a total of 5 Meet and Greets in 2010.

I saw that. I'm really sad about it.

I'm not GOING to any of those conventions. I don't care about comic cons...

Several people I was really anxious to meet were going to go this year.

Here is my thing...

Why couldn't they've said this before telling us about PAX... The whole reason I didn't want to go to PAX was because I would have prefered to go to HeroCon. Granted PAX wouldn't have been that far from me travel wise, but I figured it's Boston Mass, I can travel down there anytime I want for scenary. HeroCon would have let me hit a couple birds with one stone, see my game friends, have fun at HeroCon, and traveled around Cali for a couple days.

They should have been more thoughtful in letting this out of the bag timewise.

There was a long discussion in Black Pebble's introduction thread about buying stuff from Hero-Con versus buying it at the NCSoft store. I guess this puts paid to that little chat.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

At this point, I'd rather buy it all online and pay the shipping rather dealing with the nonsense.

Big time. Especially since, as far as I can tell from the announcement, PAX was the only east coast even planned for this tour. I'll fly out to Cali for Hero-Con, but I'm not interested in the rest of that.

Well, considering it's the only option right now...

I haven't been at the NCSoft Store in a while, is it a possible option?

Well if they are doing that, where is the Texas love. I know Kansas and Oklahoma hardly get the big stuff; (we do, just not that often.) But I know in Dallas/Ft. Worth Area there is a huge comic convention every year. That could be placed on the trip and I would be in a better position to go to that, but let's face it. If you don't live on either coast and you want to go to Hero-con, or any other of the main events, be prepared to shell out a couple hundred bucks.

And Sooner, good to know that the Tornadoes did you no harm. I have a friend that was near Norman and where he was at was hit really bad.

More of an option than a non-existent Hero-Con, though they only sell the Hero/Villain shirts as far as I can remember.

From a marketing prospective it makes sense - the people going to Hero con already know about CoH and play, while people at the other cons may not. It's a way to get info out about the game, but still... it sucks. I know a lot of people look forward to HeroCon.

Just restating what I wrote in another thread. I too am disappointed. I'll miss the weekend long HeroCon party and meeting up with a bunch of my Protector/Justice friends. It's relatively easy for me to attend a Sat M&G as I only live 3hrs away, but I know there a lot of Protector and Justice folks where traveling for a M&G is just not worth it, I'm going to be missing a lot of people.

But I look at it this way. HeroCon is mainly for the players and the Paragon Studio staff. It's a great time time to hit it off with the people that already love the game . What it doesn't really do is bring in new players.

I think that along with the feedback they got from people at PAX East, they might have also seen an upsurge in subscriptions. If I have to give up the full-blown HeroCon this year in exchange for seeing the player base grow, then I'll gladly give it up.

I'd rather have both. These smaller meet-ups at Cons for people that just want to meet the Devs, and Hero-Con for the rest of us.

I was very much looking forward to Hero-Con this year, mostly to meet so many of my in-game friends at once. Even if I went to one these smaller ones, I doubt any specific one of them would bring together the number of friends who would have gone to Hero-Con.

Not to mention, why would I want to travel to any of those cons when the only part of them I'd be interested in was the CoH stuff. I'd rather have a con just for CoH, ie Hero-Con.

This. exactly this.

I'm not going to mention that they still are ignoring Dragon*Con.

Nope. Not going to mention Dragon*Con at all.

It's silly really. I mean it's only one of the biggest conventions in the US. So there is no need mentioning Dragon*Con.

So I won't mention them not planning on going to Dragon*Con at all in this discussion.

Very nicely put Trick. I was looking forward to tormenting you in person. I've always viewed Hero-Con as a kind of "Thank You" to the players for your continued support of NCSoft and the game. Also as a way to meet other players who you just know in game or on the forums.

::brawny hugs Ura:: DIRTY SOUTH REPRESENT ! LOL

Ura nailed it, at least for Wolfie and I. I'm not diving very far into this pirannha-infested opinion pool, because sure enough I'll step on some toes. Howevah, I will weigh in with the "If they were going to do this, they should have waited until it could be 'rolled out' a little more gracefully, as not to alienate the fan base" contingent. Split it up, fine, but do it in such a way that your attendees can plan for next year, instead of lament this one.

Having said that, over the years I've been here, it's pretty much been West coast this, and East coast that (Heavy on the West) Ura nailed it on the comment about DragonCon; the South is ignored. We have Atlanta, which is by no means a puny town, and many large cities in the South in general. Yet, the best we get is "There's something in Philly" or "Something in New York."

I'm hoping if they are going to split it up, they will take a critical look at the four quarters of the country (continental US, Canada is on its own ! LOL), and place one in each area, even if it they have to "invent" one themselves.

I think the whole point is they don't want to "invent" a new con by themselves, and prefet to piggy-back (Empulse did use that term) on existing cons.

Too bad, I was planning to take a week off work in late October and spend a few days in CA - go to HeroCon, drop by to see Cimarron...

Oh well.... I'm going to GenCon this year, so if I'm lucky I might bump into some of you there.

No Canada love

Just as well, I suppose... it'd prob end up in Toronto if there were any, and you couldn't get me to go to TO if you paid for my ticket and promised me an unlimited supply of Keith's when I got there....

"Something in New York."
I won't even go to this, and I LIVE in New York!

This big state is not one gigantic city! There is six hours of travel across the state, and for any of these conventions, that would be the START of my journey.

I guess one of these days I need to plan for a San Diego Comic Con again. It's been too long since the last time I went.

We run into this a lot when dealing with people who are coming to America for business.

We had one guy who was visiting from Belarus, he thought he'd just take a drive over to LA from Atlanta. He said he had three days and wanted to spend a two days in LA. He was a bit shocked to find that he might get a few hours if he was lucky and could handle 20 hours behind the wheel at a time.

Then there were the folks from Hong Kong who needed to go to Chicago. They thought they could hop up there in an hour or two. Again a bit of a shock when we told them that just getting to the airport was going to take an hour.

Folks tend to forget just how big the US is. Sure it's possible to drive across the US from San Francisco to New York City in 60 hours. I've done it. Just don't expect to get any sleep.

As a guy who drove from Montreal, QC, Canada to Columbus (Origins) once and and Indianapolis (GenCon) thrice (4th time this year)...
