Did I miss a rulebook somewhere that says powers must be slotted a certain way to be considered correct? Or is it just that everyone is so set in their ways in slotting a blaster that they can't consider any other options?
Edit: I updated Mid's. I didn't realize that defense was screwed up too. I noticed the weird HP bonus numbers.
Never mind, I guess if I want defense I'll just have to conform to ranged defense like everyone else does. Which completely defeats the purpose of my build. It's also impossible for me to hoverblast because the character in question has the flight bug that makes him constantly fly downward.
I guess that's what I get for trying to do something different.

I don't know why you are being so defensive. I guess you are one of those super srs types.
The build I made is soft capped to your specifications, for real. Because of your version of mids you failed to do what you claimed to have done. I was teasing you a little but don't take it as an insult.
But I wouldn't play the build I made, for that amount of investment I could just as well generate more orange numbers. Besides I six slotted jump kick. I can't think of stooping any lower besides picking up group TP or fly for the BOTZ bonuses.
Honestly, it seems to me you just end up with something below scrapper survivability while also being under scrapper damage.
If the goal is to do different for the sake of being different, go for it. I'm sure it'll be still perfectly playable and enjoyable.
As for performance, I think you'd get more mileage out of softcapping just S/L defense, and picking/slotting for maximum efficiency on actual powers with what's left.

I mean, really, would it have been so hard to just say "Hey, that version of Mid's is screwed up, the numbers don't match up"?
Instead the first thing in your post was "this one doesn't fail as much". You were kinda being a jerk for no real reason. Hence my defensiveness. If it had been more clear that you were kidding about it, I wouldn't have reacted the way I did.
It's just perception. So many people say the kind of stuff you did and are dead serious about it, I just kind of figured you were too.
As far as power choices go: I took Burn because I frequently team with my wife's Plant/Kin controller, and Burn is a nice power when the mob can't go anywhere.

I'm all for people playing and enjoying nonstandard builds. But I question how long it takes to kill a boss without aim and buildup. I don't think I could do it. I'd feel way underpowered and thus, as a blaster, vulnerable.
If I wanted to stand in melee, not get hit, and use fire attacks, there is the ice/fire tank, or fire/sr scrapper and both have mez protection.

I assume you don't wait until they're back up before attacking a boss, so how would not having them be any different than when they're not up?
I forget to use Aim and Build Up all the time as it is now, so I dropped them. No sense in keeping a power you never remember to use.
I'm not looking to start a new character here. I already HAVE the blaster in question at level 50, I'm just looking into getting more survivability out of him, because he is by far the most faceplant prone character in my roster. Saying "play an ice/fire tank or fire/sr scrapper" is fine......except that would require me to create and level one, which isn't what I'm trying to do here.
As I mentioned before, hoverblasting isn't an option for this character because he is bugged by flight powers not working properly. When I try to fly (even with a jet pack) I am constantly flying downward. I petitioned it and sent bug reports several times and it was never fixed, so I solved it by just not taking flight powers.

Well, I don't know. How long does it take you to kill one when Aim and Build Up are recharging?

When I know I have to fight a boss, I Aim and BU from a position of stealth, and get off at least 3 attacks before he hits me once, so he's at least at half health, so I know Im killing him faster than you.

Just so you understand where I'm coming from, I am never frustrated by an occasional blaster death. It is rare. Therefore all my blasters are focused on accuracy and damage and to hell with defense or resistance, its a waste of time for me to even think about. When Im fighting on the razors edge of fun, I consider it an absolute victory if Im still standing, and just take a knee if im in the red. Im also one of the old time blasters that didnt mind the old defiance. I never complained about it. Sometimes blasters get hit hard. Thats just a fact for me. I hit hard too.

Just to start off, im not attacking you. So stop being so defensive. |
I never found that not using Aim and Build Up slowed me down to any great degree when I ran into a boss.
Fair enough, if you cant use the power to full advantage, might as well drop it and just fire more attacks I guess. But whats the difference of clicking aim and bu or clicking flares and fireblast. It's still 2 clicks, not like they're interruptable. |
The flight bug only really affects me because I play strictly with the keyboard. I use the arrow keys for movement and the number keys to activate powers. If I steered a flyer with the mouse it wouldn't be a problem. The bug seems to be related to camera positioning more than anything else. When I activate a flight power it re-orients the camera to be behind and slightly above my character, causing a downward slope when I try to fly forward. And adjusting the camera with the mouse doesn't seem to work.

So just because it's not slotted how you would slot, it isn't proper?

There is a real interesting point and question. Two to three melee hits from a boss and a blaster is toast. That is an accoladed out blaster with bonus hp at that. To kill a boss the blaster has to land 2500 points of damage.
This build looks like it could survive enough time to do the damage to multiple bosses that a build with aim and build up but no defense might not be able to.
As always with insps completely change the argument
I'm not criticizing your build in particular. It's just a general observation that people (including my suggested build above) have to sacrifice quite a lot in order to acquire the desired bonus. Actually, we are just trying to help by posting builds and making suggestions here, and not meant to be offensive.
|
I may revise my build to try and achieve at least 35% to all types, which with blaster damage output should raise my survivability quite a bit. And I can see just by looking at my current build is definitely possible...though I may have to do some other strange things to pull it off.
I don't need to survive indefinitely, just long enough to defeat my enemy.

I like it and I'm planning a similar thing with my fire/electric blaster. I question the need for nrg typed defense if you're already softcapping your ranged, though. I don't know offhand, but I can't imagine there are that many energy attacks that won't roll against either s/l or ranged instead.
I would think that you could put less emphasis on your energy defense, and try to work in a six slot gaussian's in build up. I'm posting from my netbook right now and I don't have mids, but if i have time later I'll put together a build like the one I have in my mind.
@Dysc, on virtue:
Virtue blues: Overnight (DP/MM), Kid Ridiculous (FC/rad), Panorama (Ill/time)
Virtue reds: Block Party (SS/SD), Goldcrush (earth/fire), Deadwire (claws/elec), Snowcrush (ice/kin)
If you plan to spend a lot of time in/near melee, Hot Feet will do high levels of damage and provides some decent control. The end cost is high, but if you spend a fair amount of time with a Kinetic on the team, it should not be an issue usually.
In your build I would drop Combustion and Blazing Aura. Ring of Fire is a good attack and should be slotted for damage, IMO.

Just a thought.
Good luck with the build idea, even 25% def boosts survivablility a ton.
Noght 50 Scrapper Broadsword/Invulnerability
Fire Umbra 50 Brute Dark Melee/Fire Aura
Impulse Cry 50 Blaster Sonic/Energy

Prickly Heat 50 Dominator Plant/Fire

I have just finished implementing a S/L softcapped build on my Fire/Fire/Cold Blaster a few hours ago, and still managed to cram five purple sets in him for the recharge, accuracy, and recovery bonuses. I took him on a couple iTFs and didn't die once, despite the fact that I was running ahead and fighting in melee all the time. When up against Khelds just pop 3 purples to hit softcap on Negative Energy and you're set to go. I'm really loving that build, it does amazing damage and is highly survivable for a blaster. Even more so if you make good use of your inspirations.

|
Of course, not being a bug doesn't make it less annoying. I tend to only hoverblast in short bursts when I feel I need the extra safety for pretty much this reason.
On the other hand, this feature enables my favorite bug. Start hovering, point your camera straight up or down, trigger an emote that puts you in a stable position or looped animation (tea and protest are my favorite, or one of the sitting emotes), and hold the descend button. Enjoy flying around feetfirst while drinking tea. The results for pushups are particularly disquieting when it's coming right at you. You can also adjust the angle so that you're sliding forwards or backwards while at an angle to the ground, but remaining mostly upright.
I'm not criticizing your build in particular. It's just a general observation that people (including my suggested build above) have to sacrifice quite a lot in order to acquire the desired bonus. Actually, we are just trying to help by posting builds and making suggestions here, and not meant to be offensive.

Did you read the part where the OP said his fire/fire/ice was 50 already?
If the OP asked for a build where he wants to lock his toon at level xx and he's at the softcap for the mid level TF ranges I would have given him one, but don't expect it to be cheap, because these types of builds never are if your baseline budget is just to cover SOs.
Came up with an interesting build for my Fire/Fire/Cold.
Softcaps Smashing/Lethal/Energy/N.Energy, AND ranged defenses. Uses no purples or PvP IOs, and seems to be playable end consumption-wise. It also doesn't use BotZ to softcap to ranged.
Pros:
Not much is going to be hitting me. I should be able to live in melee most of the time relatively unscathed (I did it with this in mind, I mostly play scrappers and wanted a blaster that could do similar things)
Relatively cheap to build. I managed to avoid most of the really high dollar IOs with this one, and the big ticket items that are in the build are optional.
Cons: No room for Aim and Build Up. I know, I know, it's blasphemy to skip Aim and Build Up on a blaster. But I just didn't have room to take them and still do what I wanted to do.
Not a whole lot of recharge, but I tested it and discovered that I have enough to always be able to do SOMETHING (even if it's just Flares ), so that doesn't bother me much.
Frozen Armor is ugly. That is a con in and of itself.
Here's the build, lemme know what you think:
