OK of those who are having connection issues how many are connected via a wireless card?

I am using a D-Link AirPlus G DLW-G510 (Rev B.)

Could CoH i17 be messing with the wireless card somehow?

it is not CoH doing anything to your comp. get a wired modem card for your comp and try it then. if no problems, it may be your wireless card. and post a CoHHelper report and HijackThis report. it will help us help you.

Difficult to say but there's a number of folks in this thread who seem to be having a similar issue and I think they're all on wireless as well: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219437

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Ok, I'll bite. It *is* wireless but it's *also* specific to CoH where the game is causing a conflict with something in certain environments where CoH ran just fine before i17. Here's an overview of symptoms:
  • Wireless connection and CoH running, the game gets pulses of packet loss every few seconds. These show up in game as "lost connection to mapserver" messages. Using netgraph, you see alternating red-green-red-green stretches.
  • Wireless connection and CoH running, if you switch away from the game, the problem goes away. This is clearly visible when running in windowed mode with netgraph running. Click on the game window and you see the red-green-red-green. Click off the CoH window and netgraph goes clear green. You can still see game activity going on with people running back and forth, autofire powers going off, etc... and the connection is perfectly smooth.
  • Plugged into the router with a network cable, the game works fine, no connection issues.
  • Wireless connection and a different online game, no problems.
  • Wireless connection, anything else (web browsing, video, file transfers, etc), no problems.
  • Wireless connection, different computer, same network, running CoH, no problems.

Hijack this, coh helper and game advisor reports:

So far, having received all the preceding information, tech support has offered the following:

  • Lower the priority of the coh task

This sounded promising. Unfortunately no lowering (or raising for that matter) of the coh task priority had any effect.
  • Contact the manufacturer of your router for help in optimizing your wireless connection.

This is a blowoff.

i run wireless. and the only problem i have has been around since before i17. i loose band width because i am on an unsecure connection and when someone else turns on and gets on the connection and downloads stuff i lag and rubberband. notice i said "before i17". i haven't noticed anything else new at all. just seems like regular old new issue glitches to me.

/This

Its what I would have said. Only add a "sigh" before I started because I would have to be doing it all over again - and again - and again.

Sharker? LOL. Why even post?

(List that basically replicates my problems snipped for brevity.)

I'm now at the point where Support is asking me to find someone else's wireless network with a different ISP to determine whether we can rule out my ISP/modem and isolate to the machine itself.

Edited to add: Which I hope to do this weekend.

Enough people are having problems of this sort that I would assume/hope the folks at Paragon are looking into it. There may be a disconnect, pardon the pun, between Paragon and tech support on the issue (ie. lack of communication of known issues or concerns for example). Also, tech support may feel uncomfortable suggesting it is a problem with city of heroes programming (especially if the issue is still be investigated) and are probably punting on the matter.

edit: also, bug the issue in game. Make sure your reports go to California, not just to Texas!

I have gone a couple more rounds of back and forth with tech support today. While there has been no solution yet, my confidence that they are taking a serious look at it has gone up a couple notches.

The latest two things they had me try were the somewhat standard go to msconfig and turn off all startups and non microsoft services, followed by uninstalling the hp wireless assistant service.

The first had no effect but it did bring me down to a lean, mean 28 processes after boot. Win 7 looks downright skinny right now.

The second had no effect but this was kind of expected since the hp wireless assistant service was one of the ones disabled in the first step.

Because every story is better with pictures, I also threw in this crudely annotated screenshot of the latest try:

I just wanted to chime in and say that I have been having this exact same issue since I started playing again around I13. I played for a bit at launch before that, and I don't remember it happening then, but that was long ago.

My problem appears to be less severe, though. I get the same pattern of intermittent red bars, but for me it's a tiny sliver, like only few pixels. I also lose exactly 2 packets each time.

I actually worked in network troubleshooting for my local ISP for years, so I can state with absolute confidence that it is most assuredly NOT a problem with my connection. I also use a wireless router, but as I mentioned I am more than qualified to troubleshoot that myself and I have not found anything wrong with it. I have the appropriate ports forwarded to my main PC on my network, and I don't even use encryption, opting instead for a MAC address whitelist to ensure nobody can access my network without authorization. I have been playing online games for around 4 years on my current PC and connection, and it has always been perfect (I live near a major business and industrial park, so my region has very high priority for outage repair or degraded signal maintenance).

In other words, at the risk of sounding exactly like those annoying, know-it-all customers I hated dealing with when I was a TSR, I know it is not a problem on my end. It appears to be fairly obvious that CoH isn't playing nice with something on my system, be it the wireless card, OS services, device drivers, or what have you, but it certainly does not appear to be anything that I have the power to fix.

This problem ranks as my #1 complaint regarding CoH. I enjoy the game immensely, but rubber-banding every 15 seconds or so is AMAZINGLY aggravating. I can't count how many times it has messed-up my positioning of point-blank AoE attacks, caused me to end up underneath an obstacle I jumped on top of seconds before, or landed me back in the middle of a huge group of MOBs after I'd just attempted to escape. Not to mention how completely messed-up Z-axis positioning gets when it happens while jumping. It makes Super Jump almost unusable.

I'll definitely be watching this thread for information. I never bothered hashing it out with their TSRs, because I cannot feasibly connect via Ethernet since my rig is in a steel ATX full tower case and doesn't fit anywhere in the bedroom where my modem has to sit (that's the only wall jack in the house that carries the data signal). Since step 2 on their checklist seems to be bypassing the router, our troubleshooting pretty much stopped there.

To add a bit more information (beyond that provided by previous posts), I'm having the exact same issues. I could not find a wireless connection with another ISP - as far as I know, everyone around here is stuck with Time/Warner, which has, effectively, a monopoly in the area. However, I was able to test with my own router/cable modem (a Motorola SBG900) and the neighbors' (a Linksys of some sort), and the issue was the same on each.

So, note to Tech Support: This problem is not dependent on the router, as far as my limited testing shows. This is supported by the fact that, even while CoH was having these issues, no other person on the network encountered anything amiss, in any way. As The_Cheeseman mentioned, it seems to be something substantially wrong with how CoH reacts to a device on the system, or something of that nature.

So it looks like I've finally got an answer. Process priority is the problem.

While changing the process priority of the game was one of the first things tech support had me try, what wasn't known at the time is the game doesn't allow you to override its priority and attempts to change it are just silently ignored.

So what is actually happening? When you first launch the game, it starts at Normal (8) priority. When it finishes firing up, it bumps itself up to Above Normal (10) priority where it remains--unless you switch away from the game or click off it in windowed mode in which case it sets itself to Below Normal (6) priority. Return focus to the game and it bumps itself right back to Above Normal.

Why is this a problem? The game, being greedy as it is for every last cpu cycle you've got, will elbow aside everything else it shares a priority level with like a fat kid at the buffet, leaving nothing but scraps for everything else. At Above Normal (10) priority it is at the same level as lots of other essential things. Things like input handlers, some network operations, assorted device drivers, etc.

This one root cause is a plausible explanation for a wide assortment of problems--the lag/packet loss (and the way it disappears when focus is off the game), the ventrillo conflict, the ATI hotkey poller bug, some cases of inexplicably slow framerates. The exact symptoms you see--or whether you see any at all will vary based on the horsepower of your CPU, what else you have running, how exactly other drivers on your system work, etc.

So what's the answer? Tech support says the devs are aware of the task priority issues and are looking at it. No time frame was offered for a possible fix.

The good news, for me anyway, is I can stop beating my head against this particular wall I'll enjoy my vacation from the game with some confidence that a fix will be forthcoming.

If you have a band-aid that works, like a different machine or wired connection or disabling a service... stick with it until they get around to sorting things out and try to pass along this info to others as they trickle into the support forums wondering why the game's not working quite right.

This can't be the problem as my CPU isn't capped at 100% and I have no conflicting issues with Xfire and Ventrilo which are running at the same time. But my LCMS happens every 10-15 seconds for about 5 seconds while on screen and I have no problems when tabbed into something else like a browser, meanwhile my CPU stays at 59% on game and 37% when not on the game. So there is something else fishy going on here and it is definitely Program-Specific....

PS running the game with Windows 7, AMD 6400+ and Nvidia 8500GT

Thanks for continuing to work through this. Since my problems are exactly the same as yours (down to the lessening of lag spikes when I window out to something else), I guess I can skip the part where support wanted me to completely uninstall Avira and wait patiently for a more permanent fix.

One curiosity, though; when I was on Test a couple of days ago, and there were 5 people logged into the whole villain side of the game, I had no trouble. Was the game just not transmitting enough data, even with its priority up, to significantly interfere with everything else?

+rep for you, btw...

i don't think is wireless as i use a wired router and I'm having the same problem.

Considering I've had this same issue since at least I13, I wouldn't be too hopeful for a quick fix. I find it hard to believe that the devs didn't have an inkling that this priority issue was causing some problems on certain machines, but it appears the engine changes implemented with UM have caused it to become evident to a much wider range of users than previously. Maybe the increased publicity of the problem will prompt more rapid response, but I am guessing that if it was an easy fix, it would have been made by now.

According to tech support the game used to run at Low priority.

Another update...

Playing around with it a bit more, I found that the conflict seems to be a three-way interaction between wireless, audio and the game. If the game sound/music volume is set above zero or any other audio source is active (like an mp3 player in the background, for instance), the connection goes bad.

Set the game volume to zero and the connection problems go away. Or, use a wired connection and I can play with the sound on no problem.

While this isn't a fix and does nothing to change the indication that the root issue is the game's elevated priority, it is at least a workaround to allow gameplay over wireless for now.

Of course, since the side effects of that elevated priority seem to vary from one configuration to another, YMMV. Worth a shot anyway.

Unfortunately, this is where my problem diverges from yours. I went in game and set all my sounds to zero (music was already there, other effects were at 10%) and the problem remained. I even turned the volume control on the main control pad down to 0%, and still got LCTM within a few seconds.

Hmm. I tried this, considering that I had little enough to lose, and went into the Device Manager to disable my soundcard. I then remembered that I had no sound card /per se/, and was using a USB headset for my audio purposes. I disconnected it, and a moment later found that a crippling connection issue had become a fair sight better.

Then I disconnected, of all things, my webcam, and found that it was even better, and even playable after reconnecting the headset. Something's either very hinky with CoH, certain motherboards, or both - but this may make the game playable again for those of us with both the problems described and a number of USB peripherals. Disconnect the nonessentials, and see if that helps!

Ive come to the same conclusion as Skeet in his post. I remember prior to i17 the game regularly pegged 100% on my cpu but never interfered with external programs (ventrilo). Since i17 launched whenever cpu usage pegged 100% i would hang in vent while chatting much to the annoyance of those in the channel at the time as I would break up into static. The 100% usage also affects my keyboard input until cpu dropped below 100 (stuck running forward). This was easily tested in ventrilo as i would look down start chatting and angle the camera up till cpu hit 100% and i would break up.

My solution was suggested to me by a member on my vent channel wasn't exactly a desirable fix but it did work. Set the -renderthread 0 flag back on the launcher. For me this forces coh to remain below 50% which in turn permits vent and other system functions to perform. Again this isn't an optimal fix but it does work for me.

This seems like another decent way to fix one issue or another - but bear in mind, it will only have an effect on multi-core systems.

Or hyperthreaded systems such as mine. Old computer is old.
Should add a point that all this adds up to is coh doesn't want to play nice with other processes on the computer with it soaking up as much cpu time as possible without sharing.
