Chimera ((Unionverse Open Roleplay))
The tip of her claws literally just pierced beneath his jaw when he made the desperate sidestep through Nether space. As his body phased into the Netherworld the claw passed through what would have been his head. The side step, and his return to real space all happened so fast that normal human vision wouldn't have caught it. So when his body reverted to real space and crashed to the floor in a seemingly lifeless heap one of the panicked citizens screamed...
"IT'S KILLED BRITANIC!!!" |
Right at that moment, a streak of blue jeans and bright blonde hair raced past Dragonfly's face. The smell of jet fuel and burning rubber choked her senses. She looked down and saw her friend's custom modified jet-engine rollerblades skid to a halt in front of her.
"I came back as soon as I could" said Codename, armed with two pistols, each strapped to her thighs and the massive flame-throwing XM8-C assault rifle holstered onto her back. "Didn't think I'd leave you stranded here by yourself did you?"
"Altair? Did you bring my swords?" asked Dragonfly, rather bluntly.
"Err, no. Seen as you never tell me where you keep them."
"Fine!" Dragonfly sighed.
"Is that Britanic on the floor?" asked Codename. "What the hell happened here?"
"Big blue happened, duh, what else?" Dragonfly snapped, unintentionally directing her frustration at her friend. "Look we need to take this thing down fast, so get out your kerosene, skater-girl."
Codename overlooked the remark and armed herself with the assault rifle. "Just like the good old Militia days, huh Sabrina?"
"Yeah" she replied, with mild nostalgia. "Just like the good old Militia days."
In one swift and graceful motion, Dragonfly squatted really low, her breath so close to the ground it disturbed the settling dust. With a massive release of energy she leapt into the air and arced backwards into a backflip as she did so. She held in the air, as though suspended in slow motion, gathering all her power. At the same time, Codename, who had drawn her weapon, trained it with laser-point precision onto the clear vulnerable areas of her target. The barrel end ignited with fire and jets of super-heated flames spouted dangerously through the air, latching onto its target with seemingly lethal consequences.
"ARGH!" the beast cried out, flailing until the flames began to die out. "GURGH!" she screamed, as a devastating airborne foot strike collided with her temple, causing full damage.
"How dyu like my Eagle's Claw you fake-*** Avatar rip-off?" snarled Dragonfly, poised for a follow up attack. "I friggin loved that movie!"
"Hey!" Acid shouted to those mulling about the alley, still using the frame of the open fire door as cover from potential further attacks from the assassin, "Not that it's any of my business, but yalls might not wanna stand in line of sight of the yahoo who just barbecued the loudmouth!"
By now, he'd managed to mentally follow Whisper's teleportation - meaning he had a viable destination in his mind. Just where they were, this he didn't know. He just felt the trail, and presently carried no means to gather actual coordinates thereof. If anyone else had said capability however, they just might be able to pass on the information that Whisper's jaunt had been a building in Talos Island. Specifically, it lead underneath the structure, to some manner of slightly shielded basement. Intriguingly enough, said shield wouldn't block attempts to find it or teleport inside.
For the Khelari, this was presently of secondary importance, though. He was still trying to find the 'shooter'. Where the heck was this guy? Did he have some sort of cloak, or was the local atmosphere just finally getting to Acid in severity...?

And here I thought we were all going to be sensible the middle aged man flickered in place, form changing into...
An image of Mister Rogers.
You know, growing means when you're a baby and you're angry, all you can do is scream and kick. That's all. But when you get a little older, you can say that you're angry. You can stomp around and make up a dance, or pound some clay and make things out of clay, and sing a song or write a poem. That's what it means to grow. The new hologram mused to itself, as it shone a laser pointer over Chimera.
It placed one hand on the floor, and a strange pyramid like device teleported in, directing wave after wave of healing energy in a heartbeat like pulse. For most creatures the energy would trigger natural healing at an accelerated rate.
The forcefield generator span in place, as it attempted to erect a force field over Chimera, the beast now added to Giant Killers acceptable allies list.
This is your final warning heroes, the target is just a child, either you stand down or you get put down the voice was loud, transmitted through the speakers of the six machines.

The alleyway...
The girl gave a small disapproving click of her tongue before replying. "Next time yer under fire from summat that can do that" she nodded to Soapbox's remains "You try rememberin' what all the stupidass combos of red an' white mean. Was a Longbow, official'r rogue I dunno, but still a damn candy"

You'd be surprised at what mundanes are truly capable of, girl. Masha thought to herself, ignorant of a lone figure that stepped up behind her as she re-entered the building and pointed a small revolver at Masha's head, a look of morbid determination on this new would-be assailant's face.
"...Monster..."
*BLAM!*

The hall itself...
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me." Molly groaned as soon as the robo-moron decided to interfere. For the moment, she still kept her sights fixed on Mechano's mob, the same as Splitter and Crash, but as long as this newcomer was around, she needed to reconsider her tactics. Again. "And -WHAT- would you suggest we do instead? Allow some mad scientist's greatest weapon to run rampant around the city levelling everything she walks into? I think not, so I strongly suggest lowering that forcefield right now, mister!"

The skies above Kings Row...
Agent: M. Romanenko
Callsign: Mashup
WARNING: FLATLINE...
Sophie looked on in horror as the words flashed up on screen in a bold, bright red font, burning its morbid alert into her memory like a powerful laser.
"No..." Sophie uttered, the first tears streaming down her eyes as she rushed to regain contact with the operative. "Masha? Are you there? Masha?! MASHA, PICK UP!! PICK UP, DAMN YOU!!"
No answer.
Screw it, Sophie. Job to do. Call Molly.
"B-boss?" the hacker stammered, barely containing her panic over Masha's flatline. She new that it didn't necessarily mean her death - maybe she just lost her monitor device somehow. "M-M-Masha just flatlined... I c-can't..."
Dammit! Molly yelled over the two-way connection. Okay... I need... uh... okay... I need your help. We've got a fallen cape here, and I don't know if he's okay or not. I need you to try and beam him to safety, okay?
"A-any idea who i-it is? Just so I can... can figure out what to lock onto, you know?"
Does the name Britanic ring any bells?
"Y-yeah... I'll see what I can do..."
Great. And Sophie? Don't worry too much about Masha. She's not the sorta person to just drop dead without a damn good fight.
Sophie slammed a finger down onto a key to disconnect the call and, doing her best to put aside her concerns for Masha, turned her attention back to the wireframe map.
"Alright," she muttered, wiping the tears away from under her eyes and silently wishing herself the best of luck in finding Britanic's body. "Let's find us some negative energy traces, shall we?"
Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."

“He’s likely to have some sort of evac method for the girl, we just need to give them time to use it.” The hologram gave Molly a celluloid smile, familiar to most American childhoods.
"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say "It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem." Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes." The hologram said reassuringly.

The Chief turned as the young woman beside him stumbled, grabbing his arm.
"Someone...hngh!" she almost yelped, grabbing her head. "Someone just died...violently...And then someone else...ohchrist..." the empath muttered, trying to steady her own breathing.

Now," Peppermint muttered to herself, "Where did you come from?"
Chimera remained as an excellent distraction, ensuring that no one paid attention to the Lady, herself. She had been concerned when the fight had first broken out, but people were now flocking to Chimera's side and Peppermint felt that the matter would sort itself out. Those who were facing medical problems were being tended by their assorted teams.
That left the backtracking. Where had they entered?
Yes, here, it must be, in the storeroom...
Seeing that Hailey had finally been left alone, Alphaea deactivated her cloaking device and stepped from the shadows of the alleyway and called out to reassure the violent and troubled teen before approaching.
"Skipping class, madam?"
Like Hailey, she wore a Humanity First logo on plain black clothes, but unlike Hailey's, hers were immaculate despite the carnage that had happened. Alphaea might sympathise with HF's ideals, but she certainly wasn't prepared to get involved in some random metahuman brawl with uncertain goals.
A pity, she thought, that Hailey didn't have the common sense to do likewise. Still, it was a magnificent first strike against the monster.
She smiled thinly. "Shall we leave while we can, miss, or do you want to wait for Britanic's autograph?"
OMG! How like, totally kewl are these characters?!1
"Shall we leave while we can, miss, or do you want to wait for Britanic's autograph?"

"That school ain't no place fer me" She stated clearly and defiantly before glancing to Soapbox's remains
"But there ain't much more I c'n do here. So gimme two and we'll bail" She promised swiftly before tugging her mask up further to block out the awful stench as best as possible before setting to looking over the mess that made up the former Humanity First member's body. Waste not was the way of survival, besides she wasn't going to take the heat if he had something important on him and it got into hero hands.
The Forcefield kept Chimera penned in and the heroes thankfully away from her.
"We need the forcefield lowered if we're to use her Arachnos medical teleporter...don't worry we are under instructions to leave for Mechano himself...despite what you think he isn't a cruel and callous man...he's a compassionate and brave one...pushing the boundaries of science...and Paragon city has proven that it's just not ready for it yet..."
David raised a hand to halt Steve, "We're leaving Executive Steve...we clear for teleportation as soon as this forcefield lowers..."
The armed scientists had lowered their weapons.
"You've proven yourself admirable today heroes...Chimmey only wanted to kill the people that killed her father...no wonder your justice system doesn't work..."
They waited for the forcefield to lower.
David glared at the one who had been shouting obscenties and throwing shoes, "Ever stop and think about what these people say, first it's the metas but you wouldn't speak up for them, then it'll be the scientist but you wouldn't speak up for them either, eventually it'll be you...and nobody will be there to speak up for you..."

He glanced around briefly, before looking back at Dave.
"Yes, the system of Justice may not always functions as perhaps humanity would wish it to. But, while it may not be perfect, it is the ideal behind it that matters. While there are those who say 'kill the criminals', it is those who show compasion who spare them. While there are times when there is no other option, and for the greater good lives have to be taken to prevent greater suffering, death creates nothing. It only destroys. And the ideal of the system is to save. That is something worth fighting for."
The Chief took a step back, still keeping a cautious watch on the hulking, glowing form of Steve.
Vix, meanwhile, had recovered somewhat, but was still leaning against Fox for support. She looked about, trying, despite the unpleasant sensation, to pin down where the shock of death had come from...around a door leading outside...
"I thought you were used to that sorta thing?" Fox asked quietly.
"I am...when I'm ready for it, like in the Warzone," she replied, not looking at him, "Not when im somewhere like here..."
Seomthing was wrong. She could sense it. But the sharp twinge that the unexpected deaths had left was making it hard to focus. So she kept looking...

Aw nuts. I'm gonna get shot again.
Imagine thus his surprise when the gunshot sounded and he didn't feel any pain associated therewith. He blinked, head snapping about to look at the source. What the heck has just happened? Who else was still around here to shoo-?
"Oh, hell no!" he exclaimed in shock and anger at seeing Masha's form and the wielder of - quite literally - the smoking gun, whom he immediately attempted to get a hold of by snapping a detention field around her, "You are kidding me! Did someone drop a crazy bomb and I didn't get the memo, or are you people just bonkers by default?!"
"Yo!" he shouted out into the alley at Alphaea and Hailey, "Tweedle Dum an' Tweedle Dee! If you're not gonna move to get out of a sniper's LOS, can ya at least do it to fetch'n ambulance?!"
Both the Mobile Microwave and the man who took off with the arm of Soap Box forgotten for now, the Khelari moved swiftly to Masha's side, snatching something from an inside pocket of his jacket on the way, and placed a hand on the woman to try and assess her condition in detail. He outright ignored Julia for now - unless she'd managed to evade the detention field and kept shooting, of course. In that case, he'd protect both Masha and himself with another wall of force. Either way though, the shot hero was his prime concern.
What had the bullet managed to do...?

"Enough," The Chief snapped, stepping up to Dave and looking down at him, something hard to avoid while being around eight foot tall. "Two wrongs do not make a right. While it it is true that peoples indifference only leads to greater problems, that does not excuse your actions here today. Whoever was the father, more carnage will not bring him back. It will only lead to more children without parents, more without brothers and sisters... And that cycle never ends."

"Sabrina!" Altair gasped. "They're terrorist, you... you don't mean that!"
"Don't I?" she said, walking away from the fight and towards the alleyway.
The skies above Kings Row...
"Yes!" Sophie hissed, quietly and victoriously as she continued hammering away at the touchscreen. "One big-***** Negative Energy signature found, attempting lock!"
The hacker, still tearful from the shock of Masha's flatline, pressed on, attempting to lock onto, or at least grab the area around what she hoped was Britanic. "Please, work, darnit! Beaming aboard in 3... 2... 1..."

"Spare me the speeches already!" Molly then snapped, herself appearing far more enraged than she ought to be. "There're only a few words to describe Doctor Edward Mechano and you know what they are? Madman! Insane! A total off-his-rocker sicko hellbent on causing as much chaos, panic and disorder as he damn well pleases, and as long as he's not rotting in deepest, darkest corner of the Zig, a constant threat to everyone's lives!"
The now-angry hero then looked around momentarily, showing quite some concern for Vix's condition and casting a cold glare at Mister Rogers before returning her attention to the Mechano crowd.
"There's no compassion or bravery here. Not tonight. You just dropped your deadliest and most destructive weapon in here to murder a bunch of... -unarmed- men and women! And in a hall full of innocent members of the public as well! That's just cowardice. That's -BEYOND- cowardice."
Molly then threw her rifle to the floor and slowly approached the stage.
"Lilly, Splitter, stand down and go find Masha. Make sure she's okay." She quietly ordered. The two of them looked at each other, somewhat confused, but they complied nonetheless and soon disappeared round the back. Molly then looked at Mechano's goons once more.
"I'll let you go this time. You've got what you wanted, even if Daddy's Little Angel didn't get to deal the killing blow. The man you were after? Just got himself well done out the back."
Molly took another look around, brushing her hair away from her face before continuing: "You got what you wanted, but guess what? Humanity First just got what they wanted too. I hope that makes Old Fart Eddie happy, giving his enemies more fuel for their fire. Giving those misguided morons a fresh excuse to make every metahuman and non-human's life hell, innocent or otherwise. I hope that makes him feel -real- fuzzy inside. I bet he's feeling proud of himself today, isn't he? Get the hell out of my sight."
Having gotten her point across, she then turned for the nearest exit, but stopped herself just short of her first step out of there.
"Oh, and one more thing. A personal message for the bad doc himself." Molly piped up, glancing to the few HF recruits remaining. "I suggest you both start writing this down pronto. I'm coming for you, Mechano. I will do everything in my power to hunt you, find you and -bury- you, you got that? Start preparing for the inevitable."
Molly then turned back to the exit and crouched to collect her gun, picking it up by the barrel before storming off.
"Start by praying. See where that gets you. That goes for Partisan too."

The back...
Acid winced in despondence upon hearing the click of a hammer behind him. So much for being left alone while he looked for the Mobile Microwave.

Fear and the horrific realisation that the shy girl in the canteen, the one who consider Masha her closest friend, tried to kill her did more to make her breathing almost impossible than the non-fatal but otherwise still nasty-looking wound that girl just dealt her.
"No more monster..." Julia quietly chimed. Despite losing her gun to the strange reptile's field, she seemed to be under the impression that Masha was on Death's door. Assuming she had gotten what she wanted from the Russian, she simply proceeded to skip past the reptile.
One monster down, another five to go. Find something to kill them with.

Masha laid face-down on the floor. The shock of seeing Julia pull a gun on her and open fire did more to keep her frozen than the open flesh wound below her right ear - thank goodness she heard Julia's mutterings in time to look behind her, ruining the girl's chance of a lethal headshot. "Move!"
It wasn't so much a word as a spoken and mental order to the reptile, the doctors eyes already glowing as she skidded onto her knees beside Masha. She cradled the fallen woman carefully, hissing between her teeth as she inspected the wound.
"This is gonna take a bit..." she muttered, before resting her fingertips gently on the skin.
The wound began to knit and mend instantly, skin and bone repairing as if in fast-motion, blood multiplying to restore that which was lost. Eventually, it was as if the wound had never been there.
Vix slowly slumped onto her back, breathing as if she had just run a marathon, clutching at her arms like they had just been put through a blender. In the upside down view she had, she spotted Julia, making her way towards the stage. She could feel the fury there, the driving urge, no, need to kill.
"Chief!" she managed to shout, or at least croak loudly.
Fortunately the Kaarinian Hero had sensetive audio receptors, turning to first Vix then, when she gestured weakly, Julia.
"Friend of yours?" he asked Molly as he strode past her, en route to intercept the glassy eyed young woman approaching them.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Vix pushed herself off of Fox, staggering and then running past the two Stiletto members, headed straight for where Masha was, along with the strange reptile and the Julia. The brief pause, along with the commotion, had given her time to catch her breath and to spot the source of the pain.

"Aaaand... yes!" Sophie hissed again. The teleporter successfully locked on to the signature and started to beam it aboard while the hacker triggered a script on the wireframe map and rushed to dig out the dropship's First Aid Kit while it ran. "Right, let's see what the hell's up with you, buddy!"
The Katana chief turned back round to be greeted by the fallen and unconscious Britanic on the dropship floor. "Okay, -not- quite where I wanted you to land, but it'll do."
Crawling over, Sophie then proceeded to fight with a small tablet-like device in her efforts to scan the hero. "Ooookay... let's see... this doesn't make any sense. No sign of injury at all!? Jesus on a jetski, I've gotta be screwing this up."
Sophie tapped a few buttons on the device's touchscreen and tried again. Same result. No sign of injury.
"...NOT MAKING ANY SENSE, DAMN YOU!!" Sophie screamed at the device before calming herself down with a few deep breaths. "I'd suck as a field medic."

"Huh?" Molly glanced behind her to see what the Chief was on about when she caught sight of Julia on the approach. Her eyes were fixed on The Pink One as she attempted to storm past the scene on the stage, either oblivious to everything that went on or ignorant. It was hard to tell. "Julia! Oh my gosh, are you okay?"
"...Monster..." Julia simply uttered as she continued her approach. "...Julia?" Molly asked again. Something wasn't right. She looked around quickly. Who was the monster she was talking abou- "Oh. Aw nuts. Stop her! Don't hurt her, just stop her!" |
"Miss, please...calm down," he urged quietly. "No ones going to hurt you..."
"She...wants to k-kill Molly...though," Vix managed, pulling herself upright and staggering back towards them. Fox once more zipped to her side, supporting her with one arm and helping her towards Julia. "Why, I don't know but...but it's practically c-consumed her."
The Chief glanced from one to the other, before moving to scoop Julia up in his massive arms, something that would certainly stop her from going anywhere...

"Screw that!" Came Hailey's blunt response as she swiftly pocketed the dead man's wallet "I ain't here t'call amb'lances. We're outta here" She concluded, shifting her focus back to her teacher to whom she offered the hand she'd offered to Soapbox just moments ago. The porter was still good to cover two people and there was nothing more for either of them here.

On a day that was supposed to be about restoring faith in humanity, the metahuman brawling and posturing no doubt continued inside while innocents were, at best, left to fend for themselves.
Well, she thought, not quite innocent perhaps. But that was only another tragedy. But perhaps, another opportunity? Certainly far too much talent to waste on drugs and purposeless crime.
She accepted Hailey's offer with a curt nod.
"Thank you"
OMG! How like, totally kewl are these characters?!1
Taking firm hold of Alphaea's hand Hailey gave a small nod before activating her teleporter. The pair of Humanity First recruits were gone in a flash, whisked back to the Isles and away from the madness in Kings Row.
Stepping foot on the streets of Sharkhead Isle once more Hailey promptly threw the teleportational device into the sea. "Ain't havin' no one trackin' me no further than this" she muttered to herself, annoyed. Not only had she had to ditch a piece of tech she was still itching for a fight. Maybe it was time to hit the cages..

The force field dropped, at least it did from Chimera, the multiple bodies of Giant Killer, were still encased in their protection bubbles. The assault bot stood with its arm held forward, devices humming as it kept its most powerful attack charged, just in case.
I will be writing to the F.B.S.A with a report of the goings on here, firstly a flamethrower? Are you mental, youre firing off such a device when civilians are present? What type of tard are you?. Then weve got the so called hero who deliberately aimed for a killing blow, on a sentient life form, you dont hit something in the temple, if youre intending on bringing it in alive. Of course the general failure of everyone who just rushed the beast, come on people its hero 101, you evacuate the civilians before you even attempt to fight the villain... sheesh, its people like you guys who make for ten issue angst fests while the hero whines about his mistakes. Mister Rogers lectured through loud speaker.

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

"Fine speech for a hypocrite," Vix snapped at the hologram. "Blowing holes in walls with robots, thats very helpful to contributing to the general evacuation. And what's more helpful; trying to organise chaos, or trying to stop the source of it? So, unless you've got something useful to say, I've got what looks like a case of trauma to deal with..."

Brawling Cactus from a distant planet.
Boss, the agent called over to Molly, I ran into a snag. Someone got to the speaker before me. Did one hell of a number on him too?
What!? Molly yelped over the airwaves. Show me!
As ordered, Masha then held the left frame of her glasses between her index diner and thumb as she kept her sights on the corpse, and pressed a hidden button just above the lens. Immediately, everything seen through the glasses began streaming to Molly, who reacted almost as accordingly as the Russian.
Oh geez... Molly muttered quietly. Okay, fall back. You're done there.
There's something else, Boss. One of the new HF recruits claims she saw a Longbow making off with a thropy. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure.
Probably isn't, Molly decided. But I'll make a note of it anyway. Right now, I think you're needed more here, though.
Understood. Masha responded, hanging up as she let out a sigh into the real world. The agent turned to head back where she came from, but stopped short of the door before she returned her attention to the girl again.
"You didn't get an idea of his Rank or anything distinguishing by any chance, did you?"
Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."
