Poison specializes in single target neutering, plus some random junk. Dark specializes in multiple target neutering, plus it has an aoe heal... and a pet that heals...

Dark is a great secondary and quite easy to work with, but traps can do things in pve that dark never could imo. I love dark personally, but traps is by far better IMO. I think it just takes more thought and people don't like to think, they like to hit a button and win. Oh wait, I can do that with poison trap ... OK carry on ...
(IF you ONLY want to pick dark or poison though, then I would go with storm)

I have a level 28 DS/Dark right now, and I'm really happy with her performance in PvE. I took Dark purely because of Tar Patch and Dark Servant.
Personally, I'm a Mastermind newbie; and I'm finding Dark to be a nice, 'easy-mode' set that let's me enjoy watching my pets wreck things to shreds while I worry about whippin' things instead of me constantly flailing around and trying to buff stuff.

Yeah dark.

It seems more focused towards higher level enemies than mass amounts of enemies.

I was going to roll /poison (poison is one of my favorite abilities in any game), that is until I started looking at /dark. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but it seems to me that /dark debuffs just as well as /poison, except AoE. It also has a better heal, an arguably better rez, and gets a debuffing pet. Sure, poison has insane debuffs when noxious gas is on, but that power has a long recharge, and requires a pet to be in melee (aren't demons ranged pets?). I'm guessing that poison would be a better fit for Thugs.

While dark has -regen, poison has -regen as well as -heal and -special (which also nukes the ability to use heals, not just the ability to be healed).
While dark has -tohit (and lots of it), poison has -tohit and -special to nuke many secondary effects
While dark debuffs resistance, poison debuffs resistance, defense, and the ability to grant defense buffs.
While dark has a single target hold and cone fear, poison has a single target hold and an aoe debuff which also has a really high mag hold. Or maybe it just stacks the hold many times. Not sure.
While dark has an aoe intangable... poison has an aoe sleep with useless end drain. Ok, here their comparable.
Dark specializes in shutting down large groups. Poison specializes in shutting down NASTY enemies such as AV's, Elite Bosses, and other single foes which you really don't like. Both are really powerful, but good at different things.

Hm, we'll I guess that noxious gas is alright for demons then; however, I still don't see how taking poison is justified.

To the OP: Honestly, either /Dark or /Poison will do fine to solo PvE. It's just a matter of your preference as to which one you might like more. I'd say try them both see what you like.

The only reason why I chose /Poison over /Dark for my Demons is because I already have a Ninja/Dark. Same reason applies for /Storm. I am noticing that I am leveling too fast for my Demon/Poison at +2 difficulty. I think that I will bump it up to +3 when I get to level 22 for the level 25 IOs and up to +4 when I get noxious breath. I would never suggest doing this with my Nin/Dark, but Ninjas are too weak as far as Damage goes.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

I just hit 20 with my DS/Poison, I've never played a MM before, so just that took a little getting used to but now I'm rolling through PvE and lovin' it!! Poison is single target so far, but the debuff on Bosses and a couple of EB's has worked out well. Plus it has a basic heal, so I can help keep the pets fighting when needed.
I prefer Dark Miasma over Poison because, IN MY OPINION, Dark Miasma is a more effective secondary when you consider everything this game can throw at you.
If someone tells me "You absolutely cannot handle an AV/Hero with Dark Miasma" then I would pick Poison even though AVs/Heroes encompass a fraction of game content because I like to have all of my bases covered.
Although Dark Miasma is not able to neuter tough, single opponents as much as Poison can, it can still handle tough, single opponents to an acceptable degree. For me I like Dark Miasma because it the ease at which it handles large groups. Poison does have aoe capability but it doesn't fit my play style.
I like playing in bodyguard mode all the time. If a boss gets lucky and hits me while I'm setting PGT, then the safetey of my pets is compromised until I can set the trap down. With Dark Miasma I toggle darkest night, hit the mob with an aoe immob, then fearsome stare, followed by provoke. I keep spamming provoke so my pets are free to attack and continue the aoe immob. until it is no longer needed.
I imagine someone may say I haven't played Poison very well. They would be correct. I gave up on Poison early on because of the lack of pet support at the lower lvls.
I'll have to give it another shot in the near future.
p.s. let's keep this debate civil. Poison lovers need not get bent out of shape & flame.
I would pick DS/Poison not because I think /poison is stronger than /dark, but because Demons is IMO the best set to deal with poison's weak points. The pets have the survivabilty needed to keep themselves alive allowing you the freedom to debuff away, they have the melee pets needed to utilize noxious gas effectively and they can even help keep you alive with heals and shields.
DS/Dark is great, but it also looks to be FoTM, so go with something a little less seen and bring something different to the team.

There's no way for any MM secondary to boost those recharge #s. Yes the shields will help but the heals won't do much if you're taking tough opponents, even less if you're being attacking by a standard mob of a dozen or so.
