Build Fu Challenge - DM/SD - Can You Build It?

Hey

I've been trying to get this build to work but I am falling short on a few parameters. The Build Fu challenge is as follows:

DM/SD Brute or Crapper

-Capped Def to All
-Perma-ish Soul Drain (like 32-33 sec recharge)
-Slotted Aid Self
-Dont gimp your attack chain (ie, midnight grasp can't have immobilize IOs in it) the build has to be viable and playable, whats the point of having perma soul drain and AAO if you have your attacks six slotted with taunt IOs.

I keep falling short on recharge or have to forgo medicine, or let go of the defense cap. Is it possible? How close can you get to it?

Oh winner gets an e-cookie and bragging rights for building the meanest, toughest damage machine to ever walk the plains of future praetoria.

The best I could do, by giving up aid self was 43% def to all. Kept all other parameters though. My Build Fu is not bragworthy however.

Do keep in mind that in Dark Melee's case, you can skimp a bit of defense. 43% is probably entirely fine.

You totally don't need Aid Self.

You'll have better luck doing this on a traps/x/dark defender if one were to read your def requirements literally

Best I can manage is 47/46/43.8 M/R/AoE with soul drain on a 36.1 second recharge with hasten up, but hasten not quite perma (131.7).

Here's how I was planning to respec post BOTZ nerf.

It may not be what you want but hopefully will give you some ideas. The respec was mainly intended to push me back to the softcap without having to move much around. I'm OK with AOE at 44.4 %

Lol you're going to cry tears of blood if you don't have stamina on a dark/shield. Dark Consumption won't be up enough to help you.

I don't know how I would survive multiple AVs or 12 bosses wailing on me at the same time without aid self. Defense is kind of 1-0 in those situations, when you get hit, you need to heal back up to 100% before a second hit lands on you, and siphon life usually does not allow me to go from 20% hp to 100% in 6 seconds.

Basically, If I could build this toon, I would transfer over all the IOs from my DM/SR that has all those requirements (much much easier to do). God knows he would not survive without Aid Self in those situations. I doubt the few points of resistance you are going to get extra from SD is going to make a difference when you're getting hit for 70% of your hp bar. SD looks very sexy due to AAO + SD.

Trouble is, looks like I DO have to give up a few things when making the same build in SD, aid self looks like one of them, but even without it, I can't seem to make 45% def M/R/A AND have permahasten+permaish soul drain. It was possible before the BotZ Change but now it looks like it went the way of the dodo.

Since I am usually amazed at the tricks people pull with slotting, I thought I'd put it up as food for thought to the build-fu-master-shifu's out there. =)


PS: If I were to drop aid self, I can get the build to where I want it but I'm not happy with the slotting of tough and dont like not having grant cover. Plus SD recharges at 35 seconds.

This is the best I could do, softcapped to all, 40% global recharge, didn't use neither the fabled PvP enhancement for +3% def nor any purple sets. Unfortunately, Soul Drain's Recharge is 52 seconds. Could be reduced shuffling a few sets but the budget (already looks expensive) would skyrocket. In any case, the 19% dmg buff should come handy:

If you can get your hands on the Gladiator's Armor +3% def enhancemnt, then it's a tad easier, still, you might not like the recharge on Soul Drain (40 seconds when Hasten is up and 28 seconds of Hasten downtime). Still, no purples used on the build though at this point, inf shouldn't matter I guess. Still a useful 17% dmg bonus:

I don't know how I would survive multiple AVs or 12 bosses wailing on me at the same time without aid self. Trouble is, looks like I DO have to give up a few things when making the same build in SD, aid self looks like one of them, but even without it, I can't seem to make 45% def M/R/A AND have permahasten+permaish soul drain. It was possible before the BotZ Change but now it looks like it went the way of the dodo.

Since I am usually amazed at the tricks people pull with slotting, I thought I'd put it up as food for thought to the build-fu-master-shifu's out there. =)


PS: If I were to drop aid self, I can get the build to where I want it but I'm not happy with the slotting of tough and dont like not having grant cover. Plus SD recharges at 35 seconds.
I've never had an issue with my Dark/Shield getting nuked by an AV and his crew. The only time my dark/shield has ever died is when doing the RWZ challenge with 10 +4 bosses and a Rikti Pylon.

Mind you, I think on this build, you're taking into equation the def bonus of Phalanx Fighting for when having a team mate in range. If you switch off Phalanx Fighting on this build, your def numbers don't reach the softcap.-

No. Phalanx Fighting gives 3.75% defense without any teammates in range. I would never have rolled a shield character if it didn't.

I'll just give the same opinion as others - I don't think you need Aid Self. If your DM/SR couldn't survive without Aid Self, I suspect you may be doing something wrong. On the other hand, I haven't solo'd multiple AVs on my DM/SR, so maybe I'm the one that's doing something wrong. I forget who, but someone once upon a time sent me a Willpower build with Aid Self. On the surface, it sounded ridiculous to me, but when I added up all the numbers, I'll be damned if it didn't have very impressive survivability. Even when you already have a ton of healing, more healing still helps.

I mean duh, yes, of course, Aid Self IS a benefit. For any given toon, ADDING Aid Self will make it more survivable. But there's an opportunity cost there. What are you skipping? Obviously you don't want to skip Hasten, because you want perma-ish Soul Drain and the top attack chain. You're going to want Tough and Weave. Hmmmm, I guess what you'd be dropping is Fitness, and relying on perma-Hastened Dark Consumption and Conserve Power, plus a little bit from Physical Perfection. Yeah, OK, maybe that would work. Maybe you're onto something. Hmmm. Yeah, it sounds almost impossible to pull off, but as you say, maybe one of the build fu masters can do it. And wouldn't it be cool if someone CAN come up with a practical build that meets your criteria?

Get end by alternating DC and Conserve power. You have aid self, at the cost of a really really terribly slotted true grit.

On the other hand, I haven't solo'd multiple AVs on my DM/SR, so maybe I'm the one that's doing something wrong. I forget who, but someone once upon a time sent me a Willpower build with Aid Self. On the surface, it sounded ridiculous to me, but when I added up all the numbers, I'll be damned if it didn't have very impressive survivability. Even when you already have a ton of healing, more healing still helps.

I mean duh, yes, of course, Aid Self IS a benefit. For any given toon, ADDING Aid Self will make it more survivable. But there's an opportunity cost there. What are you skipping? Obviously you don't want to skip Hasten, because you want perma-ish Soul Drain and the top attack chain. You're going to want Tough and Weave. Hmmmm, I guess what you'd be dropping is Fitness, and relying on perma-Hastened Dark Consumption and Conserve Power, plus a little bit from Physical Perfection. Yeah, OK, maybe that would work. Maybe you're onto something. Hmmm. Yeah, it sounds almost impossible to pull off, but as you say, maybe one of the build fu masters can do it. And wouldn't it be cool if someone CAN come up with a practical build that meets your criteria?
Yeah, that's my wet dream come true.

I don't know... If I get hit twice within 6 seconds on a build without aid self on my SR, by two AVs, I'm dead. So basically, unless I'm fighting just ONE AV, I need the healing. On SR it is almost a non issue since I'm softcapped, have perma SD, my attack chain is MG>Smite>SL>Smite>MG with 185% recharge, and have 4 end/sec recovery without factoring in the three +end procs. I don't even HAVE dark consumption and I cannot run out of endurance. I'm using fitness, fighting, medicine, speed, body. So I cant find anything I would use instead of aid self.

Now SD looks very sexy due to the extra damage buff from AAO. But I can't make a similar build. Mind you I have not actually played the build I posted (softcapped, permahasten, no aid self) so yeah maybe, it can do fine without aid self. I guess it's time to go on test, do the ten respecs to get the IOs out of my SR and dump them onto the SD to see. But I have that nagging feeling that it wont make much of a difference. It will still be a great char to play but I'm not sure I can do the same things I do on my SR that has aid self.

Maybe it's my luck but I do get chain slapped and when I do, its usually carpet munching time. And no, not in the fun sense. =D

Whoah, didn't know that, that makes way easier for Scrapper and Brute softcapping (plus now I need a couple more respecs US side if I ever resub there)

This is the best I managed for Gemini's requirements, Hasten has a 1.4 seconds gap and Soul Drain has 35 secs recharge when Hasten is up. Still, it has Health, Stamina, Conserve Power, Physical Perfection and Travel Power... and will cost loads of inf I'm afraid:

I don't know... If I get hit twice within 6 seconds on a build without aid self on my SR, by two AVs, I'm dead. So basically, unless I'm fighting just ONE AV, I need the healing. I guess it's time to go on test, do the ten respecs to get the IOs out of my SR and dump them onto the SD to see. But I have that nagging feeling that it wont make much of a difference. It will still be a great char to play but I'm not sure I can do the same things I do on my SR that has aid self.

Maybe it's my luck but I do get chain slapped and when I do, its usually carpet munching time. And no, not in the fun sense. =D

Looking at the build it looks like a lot of your slots go towards getting permanent hasten and on the way you're making a lot of sacrifices.

Two of your attacks aren't even slotted for damage, both Petrifying Gaze and Dark Blast are average powers at best.

If close to permanent Soul Drain is your goal I'd go another route. I have 15% less global recharge bonuses but my Soul Drain recharges at about the same exact time as your build does.
