EB or AV... when?

It used to be that an AV would turn into an EB if you faced it with fewer than a certain number of heroes, depending on your Reputation setting.

With the new "4XP" settings, there is a separate setting for EB vs. AV. Does this setting apply only when solo? Or can you face an EB even with 8 teammates? (I think in the old world, you used to get an AV when your team hit 5 members, even on the easiest setting).

From Wiki article

"Missions that call for a "signature character" such as (say) Aurora Borealis or Anti-Matter will spawn that character as an Elite Boss or Archvillain depending on real (not adjusted) team size, as listed below."

See chart.

It only applies solo or on teams with fewer than 5 members. Once you hit 5 members you get AVs no matter what your difficulty. I'm not certain what happens if you're on a team with <5 members but are running with difficulty >=5.

You get an AV as long as you are set to get AVs solo and you are set to +5 players

But if you duo with "I want don't want AVS" and +5 plyers you will usually get an AV as well

i frequently run on x6 to x8 spawns, and no matter what your diff is, unless you have team size large enough or the check that you want AVs no matter what, it will spawn as an EB

(i always keep AVs turned on cause its more fun for me lol)

The "I am equivalent to x heroes" setting does not affect EB/AV scaling.

You get an AV if any one or more of the following is true:

-You are on a team of 6 or more real players.
-The person who owns the missions has AVs enabled in their difficulty settings.
-You are on a Task Force.

The latter does not include Flashback or AE mode, even though they use a variation of TF mode. I am unsure if the Ouroboros mini-TFs (Lazarus, Twilight's Son, Tesseract, Silos) count as TFs or Flashbacks for these rules.

If none of the three rules above are true, then the AV scales down to an EB.

Note that if an enemy is meant to be an EB, it is not possible to force them to scale up to AV status.

Thanks, all. Seems like Roderick summed up the communal knowledge pretty well. It looks like if I want to make an "AV sting" team (line up a few AV's and invite folks in on the smackdown), I ought to set the "prefers AV's at full power" option. I've always just solo'd the EB, but I thought I'd try something different this time.

How big a team do you usually need for an AV? I've been on a couple teams of 8 that seemed like they took the AV down in a few seconds. What level does it start to become dicey?

Thanks again!

lately ive been regularly duoing AVs, usually as long as you have 1 person with -regen and a brute, tank, whatever that can hold aggro good, then you can usually kill them fairly easy

soloing an AV is prolly one of the more difficult things with AVs

... and I'm thinking my Dark/DP defender wouldn't be very good at it! But I've got some -regen, some healing, and some to-hit debuff to bring to the table. I figure I probably need some DPS and a tank. (Or a couple scrappers with one or two more defenders to help keep them alive).

I can tell you that Twilight Son's arc will give you an EB if you're solo and don't have your diff tweaked up.

Not that it's helping me kill the rotten *%@(&^$@*...

So the Oro TFs use Flashback rules. Good to know.

Depends on the team makeup and the particular AV. Most AVs are simply bags of hitpoints with a few strong attacks. Assuming you're at level 32+ facing one of these bags, you need about one and a half scrappers worth of damage, and one strong scrapper or average tank worth of defense. Below that, you're either lacking the DPS to overcome the AV's regen in a reasonable time, or having trouble keeping the team alive long enough.

The exception being the Positron TF, where you always get an EB and he never scales up.

The exception applies to all true EBs. Most EBs you encounter are scaled-down AVs, but some are naturally EB.
