Traps are on the floor... now what?

I can't tell if I'm playing Traps wrong or if it's just not my flavor of powerset. It just feels like I have absolutely nothing to do after I've used all the powers once, except stand there and watch my pets/teammates do stuff, which is just dull. I may get to lay another Trip Mine every now and then after standing around long enough, but that's about it.

It's enough to almost make me consider taking the damn Pulse Rifle attacks just to have something to do while stuff is recharging. And anyone who remembers me from ~half a year ago will know I'm strongly against MMs taking personal attacks, so that's saying something.

The fact that Robotics is the most dull primary to boot doesn't help, but my main problem is still with Traps. Any tips on how to keep myself from falling asleep in combat after using every power once in the beginning?

I have a Poison MM so for me it never gets boring...in fact I often Poo myself lol.

ANYWAY, I would be laying down Acid Mortar every time it's up. I love having 2 of those puppies out at one time. Good for stacking and it protects the squishies by taking aggro. With Hasten it should be up pretty Often.

I also use seeker drones a lot. Once the Melee toons takes the Alpha I drop the Drones in the mob to mix things up and make things safer for everyone.

Force Field Gen. is pretty self explanatory.

I put down Triage Beacon when there's a big mob or if there's a Boss. Also I sit it down away from melee as a place for squishies to catch their breath.

I keep Caltrops around me to keep baddies away and doms and corrs love it b/c it protects them...just be careful not to piss off the melee toons with it hehe.

during a Boss/Av/EB fight I use Web Grenade as debuffer. -62% is nothing to sneeze at I wager! It also keeps them Put! *if you have doms to add to the mag or if you stack that bad boy.

Traps keeps me pretty busy on my defender...if I had a mm I would be so busy that I would forget about my pets lol.

I hope I helped!

No, that's what I'm saying. I lay all that stuff down (Mortar, FFG, Beacon, Caltrops, PGT) and then all I can do is spam web grenades for the rest of the fight..

Posted

Oh...Hrmm, Well you can always lay Down Acid Mortar when it's up as Well as Web Grenade...and then blow up a mob or two with Trip Mine...then use Poison Trap.

When I play my Traps defender I am always busy. Maybe I'm not reading into what you are saying correctly but a lot of traps powers you can spam whenever it's up...and acid mortar and Poison Trap seems to always be up (if you took hasten).

Maybe you should tell us how your "style" or what your combo is when you are on teams or solo.

You should be spamming web grenade. Not only is it an immobilise and thus keeps enemies in your minion's burn patches, but it's also get a pretty hefty -recharge component, so the more enemies it's on, the less incoming damage you'll get.

Of course, my /Traps MM does have the Pulse Rifle attacks (at least the last two), and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and don't let these forums tell you otherwise.

I took the strongest rifle attack leveling up, but dropped it at 50. With burn patches and AoE immob, most groups don't last long enough for me to even lay all of my traps.

You could always take the presence pool, and start taunting the enemies to follow you over your traps. (Best done when there's a corner you can duck around to avoid their ranged attacks.)

I can't see why anyone would take Triage Beacon over a pulse rifle blast.

I agree that traps arent the most active secondary. But I find that if you open with seeker drones (To take the alpha) then drop either PGT or Acid Mortar that is enough for one spawn. Use the remaining power for the next spawn.

To keep myself busy I took a patron immob and use that + caltrops while I wait for everything to die. But coming from a bots/ff I don't mind the slightly lazy style of play.

Traps is active at the start of a fight, but unless it is a ong fight there isn't much to do once all the traps are out. Not that much more is needed after that point since everything dies

Because it's a better power for a Bots/Traps. My Bots/Traps has Triage and Heal Other; Triage constantly heals all the Bots, keeping them from being ground away faster than I can keep up with a single target heal, and helps keep them alive when hit with DoT damage that makes Aid Other unreliable or unusable. It also is nice when hit with an AoE attack.

I take all three. No Power Pools left so Triage is the closest thing to a Heal. Plus the attacks are good for after I've thrown all the traps.

If you can post your build, Col, that might give a better idea of what to look at and suggest.
Don't bother with the attacks. In fact, I respeced Alpha a while back and got rid of the personal attack, and actually found it MORE fun than when I had the attack.

If you dont have hasten, get it. And, really, treat your bots like an extension of yourself. They ARE attack powers.
I think the best advice I can give is; if you are sitting back and shooting, you are doing it wrong. Bots/Traps is all about not being as much in your opponents face as literally stampeding over him in a close and personal wave of trip mines, angry robots and seeker drones

Oh you "don't take the personal attack" guys....... I always take one. It's partly for boredom, and partly for style. The costume is just as important to me as the ability to kick ***. No point choosing and customizing my laser rifle, plus maybe trying to unlock costume options for it, if nobody is ever going to see it.

1.)Solo avs, or take on some +1/+8 mobs.

2.) Take provoke and spam that to keep the agg.

3.) Rake in the millions in infamy. Or tons of xp prior to 50.

4.) ?

5.) Profit.

Maybe so you can solo AVs or GMs.

Seriously, even in normal play, triage beacon keeps you alive. It boosts your regen and your bots. I took provoke to keep the attention on me. The damage is split pretty evenly between me and the bots, which makes Triage Beacon enough to keep mine and my bots' health topped off all the time.

The pulse rifle blasts (even if fully enhanced for damage, end reduction, recharge, accuracy plus a proc or two by some miracle frankenslotting) will never compare to the damage of the bots. The attacks do too little damage for too much endurance, and to waste the slots enhancing them for anything other than set mules is borderline stupidity.

Maybe I'm not doing it right. I don't have any pulse rifle blasts. The only trap power I skipped was detonator. I took teleportation, hasten, provoke, and leadership as my pools. Maybe I'm doing everything wrong.

I can solo +2/x8 Malta with bosses. I leave AVs turned on because I don't notice EBs. I've done the same thing on my side of the map that seven other people did in the same amount of time. I've never once wished for pulse rifle blasts, and triage beacon keeps me alive.

I don't know why you're having this issue, but I always have something to do with my bots/traps. If you haven't already, turn up the difficulty. At this point I only run x8, even in mayhem missions. Provoke is practically on auto attack (I taunt like your sixth grade bully), and I spam both of my immobs (webnade and Mu cages) as they're available too. Caltrops is on high recharge and I threw in the knockdown proc (little tip for endless amusement there; they TRIP over little pointy things). I'm also micromanage-y with my bots. I bound shift+click to "petcomall goto defensive". Finally, if you're like me and have managed to softcap to both ranged and AoE (or perhaps S/L), you can drop a trip mine or two mid-fight.

Yeah, I'm kind of the opposite play style. I take a minimal number of traps, just cause most of them don't fit into my plans. Then I go for stamina. The thing about personal attacks is that they do more damage than your pets' attacks and are more likely to hit, except maybe your tier 3 pet. I still don't use my personal attack much, but it's nice when I'm up against an enemy that's just taking too long to go down. (Or when I get impatient for enemies to die.)

It certainly sounds like you're not doing anything wrong, lol. I might have to take a lesson from you.

I like to manage my henchmen too. I usually have them all focus on one mob until he goes down, then move on to the next, then the next, etc. That exposes them to the least damage over the course of a fight, so I can do higher diffs. I'm also kind of lazy about enhancing, so I end up doing a lot of re-summoning.

You can get one attack. I always get the second (slightly longer recharge) ST attack on my mm's so I can draw aggro or help with the damage when I have nothing else to do. Why is that wrong?

I would take the one attack but I end up just diving into the Presence pool. That one attack isn't enough to hold baddies attention once you get in the higher lvls even with Sands of Mu.

As Negate said, the ST attack won't do you anything for drawing aggro. It's not wrong to take the power, but it is wrong to take it for aggro purposes. You're not going to do enough damage to raise in threat above your bots and you can only hit one target. Taking provoke from the presence pool hits several mobs at the same time, is almost always enough threat to get aggro, recharges faster and costs zero endurance.

Again, taking the power isn't wrong. I've never excluded someone from my TFs for their build. But taking it for aggro purposes is wrong, because it doesn't accomplish what you're trying to do with it.

It'd be like taking a hammer with you to plant some trees. A hammer is a great tool for nails, but it's not going to dig a hole. Get the right tool for the job.

I get the photon grenades on my bots-masterminds sometimes for the AoE stun. It gets their attention, too.

I'd like to see the build as well. You may need more recharge or more damage or some procs.

By the time all my traps are placed while on a team, that group is dead and then its on to the next one.

Solo it only takes slightly longer but not long enough to get bored. But I do have an Achilles heal -resist proc in acid mortar and 2 damage procs in caltrops to speed up the damage.

Now, in my opinion, this is a good use of one of the personal attacks. The stun isn't perfectly reliable, but it's better than nothing and has the chance to stack with the seeker stun, protector stun, and the protector seeker stun. Likewise, life drain can be a great "attack" when you're tankerminding. Enough health to keep yourself alive when taking a ton of attention.

If you're going to take a mastermind personal attack, you should do it for the utility, not the damage. Again, this is only my opinion.

Sure, the pulse rifle blast works well enough for that. I just feel that there are much better ways to do it.

Summoning the seekers in the mob is generally the safest alpha you can take. Opening up with a group immob is going to result in optimized damage on the enemies. My favorite alpha strategy is to simply jump into the group and throw down my caltrops (a wide area damage and debuff which helps hold aggro) which have a chance to knockdown and then throwing around my immobs and the poison trap. Between those three, nothing gets out of the burn patches and I can clean my way through +3/x8 spawns of most anything.

But this game is about having fun. If you want to be able to shoot the bad/good guy in the face with a pulse rifle that can singe his eyebrows, you're free to do it. As I've said, I won't kick anyone off my teams for their builds, and the reason is fun. To me, fun is being able to kill anything. To you, it seems, fun is looking cool or feeling like you're contributing damage. Who am I to judge that?

I'm not. So, please, don't take anything I say as condescending. It's your $15 per month, play how you like. I'm only offering advice in terms of performance because that's what I find as fun.

I didn't want to give the impression that I rely on my ST attack all the time. Of course I would usually drop down my debuffs and holds to start the action.
I used it a lot in early levels because it does do quite a good amount of damage to foes at those levels and helps to finish the missions quicker. At later levels I found it was useful to finish off that last little sliver of health on the last foe standing so I kept it in my build.

The only reason I bother taking a single-target attack is purely for pulling purposes. It's nice to be able to pull at least a few members of a spawn one-by-one to where I've got my pets stationed so that they're not just rushing in to be slaughtered by a boss and the half-dozen or more minions & LTs in the same room...

Helps pick off fleeing enemies, too, which is nice (especially Pulse Rifle Burst with its knockdown).
