Question about the maintenance schedule

Is there a maintenance schedule? I can't find any mention of one in forum stickies or the Support knowledge base, or anywhere else for that matter. The closest thing I can find is a forum post from an admin named Niviene, who said they were going to try out a global schedule but doesn't seem to have ever posted what the schedule would be, much less whether it's currently in effect or not.

Anyhoo, people in-game had told me maintenance was once/week on Thursdays, but the servers seem to have just gone down (on Wednesday). Which is no big deal if it's a one-off, but the automated warning called it "regular daily maintenance", which sounds chillingly like they're still using the insane system they used to have, where maintenance was ostensibly scheduled for every day and just occurred randomly whenever. Please tell me they're not still doing that?

Thanks for any info...

Maintain is usudally on Thursdays now.. today was a surprise to all of us.. that started a SF.... so needless to say we barely finished on time.

When you attempt to log into the game while the servers are down, it tells you to check this page:
http://www.cityofheroes.com/servers/index.html
That's the old page's URL, but does re-route you to the correct page anyway:
Server Status <-- I recommend bookmarking this page.

On that page, you will find the information you are looking for:

Quote:
Changes to the Server Maintenance Times

As of Thursday, October 22nd, the regular bi-weekly server maintenance times will be modified and will take place once a week on Thursday from 4:00 AM Pacific / 7:00 AM Eastern to 6:00 AM Pacific / 9:00 AM Eastern.

Please note: while we are reserving that two-hour period for maintenance updates, they will not necessarily require the entire two hours and additional updates may be scheduled outside this time-period as needed. We may also perform maintenance on additional servers, such as the web servers, message boards, or login servers.
As for today being a Wednesday, the reason the servers are down today is also on that page:
Quote:
The Live North American and European City of Heroes servers will be offline for the implementation of a build on Wednesday 17th March 2010.

Start Time: 6AM Pacific Time (9AM Easter Time / 1PM GMT / 14:00 Central European Time)
Expected Duration: 2 hours
Expected Finish Time: 8AM Pacific Time (11 AM Eastern Time / 3PM GMT /16:00 CET)

Patch notes will be available after the downtime.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience!

So by "implementation of a build", they mean they're rolling out a patch?

Yes. As for what they are adding/fixing:
"Patch notes will be available after the downtime."

Servers appear to be up, but no patch notes yet that I can find...

Though usually they say that there are no public patch notes in these cases, sometimes they don't put out the details publicly on the forums. It could also be that they are on their way and you just have to be patient.

I'd be very surprised if this wasn't simply removing a horrible AE exploit that was allowing people to go 1-50 in less than an hour.

It's true. This game is NOT rocket surgery. - BillZBubba

Yep, that was it. As an exploit, they don't announce it until they're pretty sure the Patch is stable and doesn't need to be reverted. So, expect Patch Notes that announce a fix to an exploit to be purposefully delayed after the Patch goes Live.
