Dual Pistol Questions

Hey all,

Now that Dual Pistols are now live, I decided to roll a storm/dp defender. So far, it's pretty fun. I didn't get a chance to spend as much time on test as I wanted, so my question is this: Are there any powers that are "must haves" or any that are definitely "skippable"?

Also, not sure if I want both Empty clips and Bullet rain. Any thoughts on which is the better option, or do I really take both.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks,

Agent

I have a storm/DP up to level 25. The default pistol, dual wield and empty clips are good. I found it very tough to fit all three in before stamina and level 20. If you do, you are likely to push back either snowstorm or steamy mist until after stamina. I think rain of bullets just looks silly, but its an effective AoE. I like suppressive fire. I am not fond of the whole executioner's shot gig. Penetrating shots is fun. The nuke is a must have. By the way, I experienced all the dp attacks during the dual pistols beta, so I do have experience with them if not on live yet.

ES's DPA is too low to take and PR is only really worth it if you go standard rounds for the -res. personally i'd go bullet rain > empty clip simply because the its a bigger AoE. I'd also probably skip HoB as well since the damage is bad and is a PBAoE (unless of course you're playing in melee more which is possible with storm)

If you insist on playing DP, you'll want Pistols, Dual Wield, Swap Ammo, and Bullet Rain. Piercing Rounds is nice if you run with standard ammo (or switch on the fly when you use PR), and... I really wouldn't bother with the rest of the powers in the set.

skip gale, thunder clap, and hail of bullets. Skip suppressive fire if you usually run on very large teams. All other powers are potentially useful.

Thanks for the advice peeps. Got my storm/dp up to 32 so far (gotta love double xp weekend lol). I'm surprised a few of you don't like Hail of Bullets. Is that because of the recharge issue or the overall damage?

I sincerely wish those were the only issues. To summarize:

*It has twice the recharge of other mini nukes.
*With any ammo other than fire, it does less damage on average than Full Auto. With fire ammo, it does only slightly more than Full Auto and less than RoA.
*It is a PBAoE, putting you directly in the middle of the mob.
*It has a four second animation, which is plenty of time for you to die.
*It does 24 ticks of damage that each have a 50% chance of firing off, making the damage horribly inconsistent. There is an equal chance to do 0 damage or 200% damage.

It should be thought of less as a power and more as a Russian Roulette minigame.

Unless i'm horribly misunderstanding the mechanics the damage should follow a bell curve meaning that while the chance for 0% and 200% damage are equal the odds are highest of doing damage closer to 100%.

They are. The actual chance of getting 0 or 200% damage is six in one hundred million. That said, it still leaves the damage completely unreliable, and this is a major issue in a power that places you in the middle of a mob to get smacked around for four seconds.

I'm definitely in the minority but....

I really can't see anything in either set I'd want to be without except O2. I do think DP could use some tweaking (HoB/Piercing rounds/swap ammo %'s) but by the way people talk about each power I'm left wondering what powers they actually do take.

A crashless nuke will never be left out of my powers list regardless if it's recharge is too long and it doesn't give enough damage incentive to be a pbaoe. Mobs pinned down by hurricane in a patch of freezing rain are just begging for a hail of bullets.
As far as being left vulnerable....... are everyones defenders really that fragile??? My kin/dp makes it a point to be the second into each spawn and fires off FS->HoB->RoB with no problems. Granted if I jumped into an 8 man spawn by myself without considerable buffs and led off with my nuke I'd get pasted but if I'm playing like than I should die.

My advice is feel the set out for yourself and respec what you don't like or use. If I followed everyones advice on this forums I wouldn't even bother making a DP hero or villain.

damage sucks. longer recharge than it should be. requires you to be in melee with a long animation which generally = death.

being in melee is all about being a stormy.

I was speaking more generally than specifically for storm/dp

Congrats on lvl 50! Were you aware that DP sucks???

The ability to stack up to 37.5% damage debuffing disagrees with you.

i know someone posted screenshots of their purpled out Dual Pistols Blaster the day after it went live, and i know a bunch of others had them in the forties at that point, but none of mine hit 50 because i was doing other stuff most of the time.

Kudos on the fifty. What's your primary?
i'm going to guess your 50 is a Defender or there's little reason to announce it here.

Consistently, or only for very brief periods of overlap? That's pretty impressive if you could do it with any consistency.

If you take the durations of the debuffs and divide them by the power's activation times, you get a number that represents how many times that power's debuff could stack if it had a recharge of zero and you spammed it. Here are the values. Arcanatime was not used, the actual values will be slightly lower than this.

dual wield: 3.6 debuffs
executioner's shot: 3.1 debuffs
piercing rounds: 2.4 debuffs
empty clips: 2.4 debuffs
bullet rain: 3.3 debuffs
hail of bullets: 1.9 debuffs

This means if you accepted a drop in damage output and formed an attack chain without pistols then you should be able to stack the debuff 2-3 times no problem. The debuff value is 12.5% for defenders. Exactly how many times you can stack depends on your recharge values and whether you have the endurance to be using the area attacks constantly. For example, if you took out hail of bullets and cycled through the other five attacks in order (which isn't ideal) then you would get 2.96, which means you would be at an average of 37% damage debuffing.

I don't know why anyone would skip out on HoB on a stormy, FR debuffs resistance also mitigates incoming damage, and makes a perfect spot for HoB to run full animation. I'm sure it does plenty nuff damage to be worth it.

lo, I got 2 lvl 50 Dual Pistols, but they are both Corrupters.

DP/Pain and DP/Kin
well my DP/Kin is my most fav char now lol, he is off the head, but that might be becuase of fullcrum and being able to siphon speed(get HoB back quicker) and heal ofc.

on the damage/Recharge i got mixed feelings, on my DP/Kin the damage/recharge is off the head, but on me DP/Pain, i'm disapointed about the damage(even with Soul Drain-Epics), HoB just doesnt feel like a strong PBAoE without any major damage buffs. (PBAoE example: Fire Sword Circle/*Rain of Fire/Combustion/ does more damage and is quicker to execute ,*even tho its not a real PBAoE).

but overall i do like Dual Pistols, it has some good control with the Knockdown/back.
jump in a 8 man spawn and use HoB with normal ammo, they all knockdown/back,
What i do like more about DP is the fact you can debuff ya enemy's and still have good damage output.
for example, if you have Tough+Epic resistance shield, then jump in a big mob, use HoB+Bullet Rain with Toxic ammo, you will then debuff the enemy's damage output by around +20%, switch to Ice Ammo jump out off the mobs(or very high in the air) and use Empty clips(the cone) will slow em(their recharge+move speed), by that time Bullet rain is back so switch to Fire Ammo and finish em off, but that just 1 example of what ya can do with the DP debuffs, i do like it .

tho i agree HoB could use a damage increase or quicker recharge, all the other powers i'm cool with.
