Nightly Kickball PvP in Pocket D!

Hello Champion! In an effort to increase the PvP activity on the server, myself and a couple others (@Skittle, @Undead Cyborg, @Tungsten Wolf) have begun to run nightly PvP kickball in pocket D.
And now some questions you may be asking:

What is Kickball you say?

--Kickball is essentially team PvP in which two or more team captains are chosen by the leaders that night. The team captains then take turns choosing players they want on their team from the field of remaining players. It is simply called kickball because it is similar to the way teams were chosen when we all played kickball back in elementary school.

I have never PvP'd before, and I have a PvE build. I'm afraid I'll just get ganked constantly and not be able to defeat anybody else.

--It really doesn't matter how good your build is. The teams will be even either way due to the team captains. Don't get me wrong, you're probably going to die more and get less kills than the PvP vets with teh uber buildz. But you'll almost certainly get some kills and who cares if you die? There's no penalty or anything.
--You won't get ganked (a lot) because there are so many other players on your team to choose from! Ever hear the phrase "Safety in numbers"? It applies to team PvP just like anything else.

What time is it at?
--Sorry to say I don't exactly know. In the future we may be able to get a constant time but it is very difficult for me at least to be available at the same time every evening. In any case, I assure you it will generally be in the around 7-8ish PM West Coast time (10-11 PM Eastern, sorry easterners but I'm a west coaster )

Is there anything else I need to know?
--You probably want to start off with something like this if you're new to PvP. If you go to zone you'll meet a lot of a**holes who will farm you.
--You have a chance of getting an uber rare PvP recipe, some of which can sell for MORE than the influence cap

I'm sure I am missing some things so if you have any other questions send me, or the other leaders a PM or in-game tell. (@Mebs, @Skittle, @Tungsten Wolf, @Undead Cyborg)

EDIT: If you have questions about how to PvP, what builds are good, etc. send me a PM, in-game tell or check out the PvP forums.

Good Luck, I hope it's a success. Don't know if I can make it during the week that late, since I got a gang of kids to get in bed and am usually pretty wore out by the time they are. But it sounds like fun (even if I'd be face down the whole time lol) and I'll try to pop in one night this week. I don't have much experiance with PVP, it's never really been a part of the game I was interested in, but have done a couple events hosted by DarkGuard a while back and dispite my number of deaths it was way fun.

I'll premise with this is a good thing. Below I'll try to touch on a few things without reiterating what Mebs said.

If you have not pvp'd very often or never at all, or are even a little curious about it I would suggest participating in a few of these matches. I say a few because one match will not be a fair representation of what pvp has to offer, nor will it be enough for you to understand how it can be fun for you.

While it is able to join an arena match via Menu->Arena, it is recommended to meet upstairs on the hero-side of Pocket D. It has it's own ramp going up from the ground floor. It is not where War Witch is exactly.

I recommend going there so people can ask any questions they may have where everybody is gathered. Ask questions if you have them as others may also.

Once you join a match there is a chat interface in that window. It is very poorly implemented, but it is used quite a bit. So pay attention to it, even though you will likely be scrolling around a lot due to the aforementioned design.

These events have all been casual and friendly. To keep it this way do your best not to get too upset and not type out in frustration. This tendancy seems to be what gives pvp a tarnished reputation.

These events use small inspirations only (tier 1). They can be bought from bartenders where the arena kiosks are in Pocket D. I highly recommend buying some of the temp powers available, especially Web Grenade and the Jaunt Initializer (self teleport).

In a team environment your build is not as important as the player behind it. This is very evident in cave maps, although they aren't chosen often.

Most times someone will nominate themselves or someone will pick another to be the designated targeter. This is accomplished with an easy bind, such as /bind v "g Attack $target". If your team does not have a designated targeter reqeust one or offer to be one yourself.

Since arena matches are won or lost based upon the number of kills a team has, squishies normally get targeted first and often. With practice you can become better at eluding and not falling as often. This also depends upon how well the team can mesh quickly.

All matches during these events are open to public viewing which means you can choose to watch the event as a hidden camera. This can even give the curious a look at what to expect.

Most of all have fun and participate once in a while if you have even a remote curiosity about pvping.

Cheers.

I had a lot of fun. It was pretty fast n furious and I died a LOT.. I'm going to bring a scrapper tonight instead of my squishy fire blaster.

Is TS and HD going to be off for these? I might copy a toon over if it's going to be a regular occurence.
Edit: If TS and HD are on I'll copy a Scrapper or Tanker over. If they're off I'll copy over an Emp or Therm.
Edit again: If you can fit Hiber or Phase or 42+ points of KB protect in your builds, those will all help. The latter might not be necessary in this setting, but better safe than sorry.

Thank you Mebs, Tungsten, UC and Skittle for running the nightly KB's. I just started PvP'ing about a couple of months ago and I am having a blast!! Everyone at the KB events have been very helpful with my build questions and playstyle advice.

It's good to see PvP making a comeback on Champion.

Keep up the good work!!

Thank you for the support all. Neuronia, kickball is intended to be run every night so it would be an excellent idea to swap a toon over. Travel Supression and Heal Decay will be turned off for these matches.

By the way, in case this affects you the map we use is generally Graveyard because it is large enough for multiple big teams to fit. Though sometimes we may make it the Caves map for good, all around chaos

Its still a kite-fest if you get an open map. And while PvE builds (at least mine) do respectable against PvP builds, expect to be fodder until you get the hang of it. The upswing is that the numbers are equal. The downside is that based on your captain, you can be on the ownage side or the owned side. If your captain is calling targets etc, chances are you'll enjoy it more as your team will be operating as a team. If team chat is silent... you're probably already dead before reading this sentence.

Not exactly. The teams are almost always fair. Though you are correct in that there needs to be a targeter on team.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to another successful kickball!

Just a quick update, I will be posting the time that KB will be run in this thread probably in the early evening/afternoon (depending on your time zone) so check this thread if you want to know when it is. I'll also shout out in a few channels an hour before, 15 mins before, and one final call before it begins.

Be sure to arrive on time or (preferably) a couple of minutes early to ensure that you get a spot because there tend to be a couple people each time who have to wait for the next round.

Lastly if you would like to be a team captain for these send me a PM and I'll fit you in as capt if I can. (Generally I like to put two/three people of the same skill and AT as captain)

Thanks again for makin PvP active on Champion once more!

FANTASTIC! great idea Mebs, Wolf, and UC. I just wanted to say this is something I will do my best to make it to every night, of course I wouldn't count on it during DXP
