No Love for Necro/Dark?
I would really like to know as well. I am closing in on lvl 26 with a Necro/dark and am curious others thoughts on powers and such.
as to the OP I will say our power choices are a bit exact from what you picked and skipped to my build. I also took leadership as I do quiet a bit of teaming and was hoping to give a bit of extra help to my pets and the team. I did a search on Necro/Dark builds but had not seen anything recently and back in like 08 there were quiet a few posts saying not to take leadership
I have a lvl 49 nec/dark MM, and really it's almost impossible to screw up a master mind, unless you go petless...
From my primary I took
3 pet summons
2 upgrades
I had soul extraction when you could dismiss a pet and use SE on it. After they took away that 'feature' I dropped it. With playing a nec/dark you don't really need the control it provides.
From my secondary I took everything but blackhole.
For pools:
Leadership (why not?)
Fitness
TP (for the summon friend and teleport).
I haven't played with IO's on this toon, but since I don't intend to really PvP with it OR try to solo AV's there's no real reason to.
Proud member of the Cole-a-lition.

Well I've never played a Necro/Dark before (obviously), so could you expand on that statement a bit? I'm under the assumption that when a pet dies you can use SE on it and then re-summon the fallen pet, thus giving you an extra pet... did it work differently before?

The original build is passable, if kinda all over the place in terms of when you take slots. I consider Tactics to be a bit extraneous, and I hate Soul Extraction. Also, I'd slot up Darkest Night to 4 slots before slotting up Shadow Fall. A lot of your powers are being taken early and slotted late (like Petrifying Gaze for example). So, that's awkward.
The slotting on your pets isnt that great. Max out the accuracy and damage on the first 2 pets. I don't even know what you were going for with 4 blood mandates.
But you could get by with this build.

I'll pass this thread along to my husband @Blood Speaker - N/D MM was his first 50, and his first real love in this game. Still his favorite character to play, so he'll have some advice for y'all who are trying out the set.

Thank you all for these posts, I am about to hit 26 and get my lich! hopefully tonight as I am just 5 bubbles away.
IF anyone would not mind could you post a few builds here just so I can get some more idea's, yes the guides are great but for the Necro/Dark they had not got to 50 yet and I am very curious if their thoughts had changed.
I love seeing the guides and the reasons from vets and how many are slightly differnt depending on play styles! this thread is a great help (am glad the op started this thread)
I have a necro/thermal. Why isn't soul extraction advantageous? You get full health pet in place of the dropped pet. Usually when I lose one, I lose the second.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
The one thing I would recommend is to take soul extraction so you can slot all 4 of the pet aura IO's - an extra 20% resistance and 10% def on top of the zombie's native resistance and shadow fall is going to go a long way to pushing up your survivability. Necromancy is one of those lucky MM sets that has a power that accepts the recharge intensive pet sets (soul extraction) so take advantage of it.
Specifically you want to get slot the following IOs:
Sovereign Right: Resistance Bonus
Edict of the Master: Defense bonus
Call to Arms: Defense bonus aura
Expedient Reinforcement: Resist bonus aura
The first two can be slotted in any of your pet summons powers and in soul extraction, the second two can only be slotted in soul extraction.

prae: Ah, I see... thanks for clearing that up for me.

Usually, I don't really start slotting IOs until hitting the 30 mark, so a lot of powers will still have SOs in them until more slots open up or I can afford the IOs needed. Thus, a power like Petrifying Gaze (a single target hold that may not get used in every fight) gets pushed asside for something like Tactics (an extra 7.5% base tohit) which allows me to skimp a little on accuracy across the board.
The slotting on your pets isnt that great. Max out the accuracy and damage on the first 2 pets. I don't even know what you were going for with 4 blood mandates.

Ravenous33: That's exactly why I posted the build... in hopes that others would post theirs, too. The existing guides are so old and not really helpful these days.
EricHough: Yeah, having the R.I.P. IOs would be really nice, unfortunately they just aren't affordable at the BM on Justice. My only other option is buying them with merits, but red side is so underpopulated that I solo a lot and it would take me a very long time to accumulate enough.
Anyway, I really appreciate all of the replies, so keep them coming! Perhaps a new guide could spawn from the information shared here.
I'm a n00b ya.
I believe most MM experts will say the single most important set bonus to acquire
or if not the most important then the 2nd most important set bonus to go for
would be hit point increase.
The more hp you have, the longer you can survive while in BG mode.

Anyone out there willing to post a few differnt builds?

Sorry, no build to offer, however, I just wanted to mention that all the servers use the same market(except test/European of course). The Black Market, and Wentworths are separate.
If it helps at all, I have found AE tickets to be an excellent source for recipe's. Just roll bronze 10-14's, keep the stuff you can use, sell the big ticket stuff (70+mill for a +regen, not bad for 60 tickets) and use the infamy to fill in the holes. I have my mm totally frankenslotted at 36. Starting at 0 inf, and no tweaking. plus serveral hundred million to go towards a later build.
I found it hard to start making infamy on villans at first, but it is getting easier with a bit of a bankroll.

I too wish we could do that, but we can't, you have to load a build manually into Mid's from an existing build on the CoX servers.

Comments re: my necro/dark build:
Necromancy: Life Drain is the only non-veteran ranged attack he has, simply as a supplemental self-heal. Soul Extraction I originally took because it's nice to fill a gap in your line with an instant replacement that's tougher and more mobile than the original. A new pet aura (from Expedient Reinforcement) was just icing on the cake.
Dark Miasma: That pool largely speaks for itself; lots of debuff in there, very solid group heal and group rez, and an 8th pet that (at the suggestion of a good friend) is now a -to hit bomb. Stacking its Chill of the Night AoE with Darkest Night and Shadow Fall (and later, Oppressive Gloom) is a nice way of saying "why buy defense when you can't hit me anyway?"
Fitness: Obvious stuff.
Flight: More obvious stuff.
Leadership: Assault, because damage is damage, and having nothing worthwhile to slot in it "saves" slots on something you use as a ladder to something else. Namely, Tactics, which gives me pets that keep on beating stuff up even if I'm blinded and, with that 6th Adjusted Targeting, gives me +7.5% status resist.
Soul Mastery: Crowd control is always a beautiful thing, but Oppressive Gloom was an exceptional addition to the set. It will rapidly stun any Lts and minions in the radius, and with the Absolute Amazement proc, contributes to the -to hit on any targets that are still capable of fighting. I generally walk into a mob, set myself to follow the toughest SOB there, turn Twilight Grasp on auto, and watch the show.
General notes: 6 slot your pets as early as possible. Everything else can wait. Get the pet upgrades as soon as possible, for the same reason. Collectively, they are your attack AND defense.

I have a Necro/Traps in her 40s. At first I thought the Lich should give me all the controls I would need, but in practice I realise that the majority of the controls should come from the player who can apply some finesse, so in retrospect I should have done a Necro/Dark for what I wanted.
While I only have half of the set that the OP and others have asked, hopefully I can still provide some insight on this topic:
Soul Extraction is Necro's unique "trick" that all pet sets have, and I think it's definitely one of the better ones. You aren't going to try and keep this power up all the time under most circumstances, but it's powerful when you need it. SE and the Lich will be able to double stack holds on a boss, counts towards BG mode (making Necro the only 7 pet-set), and as a previous poster has mentioned allows you to slot the unque intensive recharge IOs.
And since people want builds, here is one I quickly made in Mid's. Not the "best" build, but I went with a mixture of frankenslotting, set-bonuses for ranged defense (42.8% with all toggles on, this may be overkill for most content for a MM, though it is probably desirable against AVs who would otherwise laugh at your -tohit debuffs), and general affordability. This build also comes with full stealth and TP Ally for SF/TF play.

A quick observation:
You may want to ultimately respec the Soulbound Allegiance over to you Grave Knights. Unlike every other MM type, your 3rd tier pet is NOT your main damage dealer. Those are, indeed, the Grave Knights, who would benefit most from the superior buffs SA grants, as well as the buff proc, if you ever acquire it. |
The Lich can also get the neg. energy proc from Clouded Senses, though you may just want to just frankenslot in order to maximise his base abilities as they are quite good.

That's a perfectly valid method and the thought did cross my mind, but I'd rather not spend all of my MM's career in AE just to get the few recipes he wants. Other people don't mind AE, but I find it more of a grind than the regular content... especially when solo.
Specifically you want to get slot the following IOs: Sovereign Right: Resistance Bonus Edict of the Master: Defense bonus Call to Arms: Defense bonus aura Expedient Reinforcement: Resist bonus aura The first two can be slotted in any of your pet summons powers and in soul extraction, the second two can only be slotted in soul extraction. |
Unfortunately, the only pet bonus recipes listed at the BM are ones within the last 3 to 5 levels of their max level... and on the rare occasion there happens to be a lower level one available, it sells for no less than 5 million (20 mil is about the norm). Thus, the chance of grabbing any of these before you hit level 40 is pretty much impossible (unless you're swimming in infamy).
With that said, there's always the merit route... but like I mentioned before, it would take forever to accumulate enough, since each pet bonus recipe costs at least 240 merits and there are 4 recipes to get... just do the math.
So it's fairly safe to say that if you're a casual player, your MM's pets are going to suffer far more damage than they should until level 40 and more likely even beyond that... making the option for better pet survivability at lower levels a moot point. Having come to this conclusion, I'm going to seriously rethink my build and see if there's any way to get around this problem without sacrificing other powers to do it... any suggestions? Quite honestly, I don't think it can be done, but I'm no expert either. LOL
Yep, I checked it out and you are absolutely correct... I didn't know that, so thanks.
