Looking for motivated supergroup maintainers

Over the past few months I've been playing City of Heroes less and less. 5 years is a good run, but the glacial pace of updates (not to mention the paltry content of said updates) for the past couple of years has sucked the wind from my sails. However, I don't want to just let the supergroups and bases fall into disrepair and neglect. Therefore I am looking for motivated base maintainers to take over the superleader positions on the Fist of Justice and Shadows of Victory. Send me a PM if you are interested in taking over the responsibility.

I'll be looking for people who want to maintain a sensible but large supergroup, with an easy to access base with all of the trimmings. I'll also need a commitment that if they ever plan to leave the game, that they will pass the torch onto another player instead of just canceling their account quietly one day and never coming back. The Fist of Justice was formed when that exact thing happened in my previous SG, and I don't want to see it happen again.

Note that any requests will be discussed internally first, so don't be surprised if it takes me a few days to get back to you.

Eh, they just need to get new stuff in game. Going Rogue should hopefully bring that about, if they ever start talking about it. I do hope for something this week, as it is a couple of weeks after War Witch said "in a few weeks," but we'll see how that goes.

Taking a break helps, too. I was gone for over a year and a half, and loved it when I came back. Lots of new things to explore, and even better gameplay than I remembered. I've had to take brief breaks since then, and they always develop the CoH bug in me even more.

I feel your pain Fuu.

It's really disappointing, but understandable why they went from a promised quarterly updates to... I'm not even sure what the schedule is now. And even then those updates have been lack luster. I canceled my second account last month just to save a few bucks for a few months. The same day War Witch came out and said they would be giving more GR updates, I was excited; then all we got was a screen shot, profile update and some Avatars... sigh.

I purchased a huge chunk of game time for my main account a couple of months ago when I had extra cash floating around, but like you have found myself playing less and less. I canceled the main account also but it will be playable until the end of the year, hopefully by then GR will be out; although I'm still curious, to be honest I'm no longer excited about it.

Part of me has nerd rage that Kong is discussing giving away my supergroups, but the other part of me is also up in the air as well on staying in CoH.

Still going to choke him, through.

I was gonna ask, but figured it was more fun to think Kong finally just took you out in some morbid way, and was then discussing the future of the SGs......

Oh well.

Also, what are you going to choke him through? A donut? A tire rim? A chain link fence? I wantz to know!

I've already forgotten about most of you

Honestly, a year ago this would not have been a question. Hamster would have gotten the bases without question. We were both co-founders after all. However, he's basically in the same boat I am. You can only play the same TFs or missions so many times before you just can't stand them anymore. Without new content I'd rather be playing Mass Effect 2 or one of the dozens of games I bought over the Steam holiday sale.

I can't blame the Devs because I'm a documented fanboi.

Dude, you've GOT to play Mass Effect 2, regardless of content.

Still waiting on the big sale. I bought ME for $20 on Steam. That seems like a good price point.

Requesting permission to make a snarky comment about playing different TFs...

You have permission, Zam (heck, include a reminder of all the great arcs you can do in the MA right now). I'd like to make out a request that someone do something for MG. His doomcrying is approaching "look at me, DOOM!" levels, and I find it annoying!

Seriously, MG. All you know about is some 1-20 stuff. Assuming anyone other than the devs knows anything else about it (whether that's all there is, or there is much more to come) is just silly.

I can understand wanting to take a break or something, but being all doomish is not needed. You're making me be positive about something, which my Scandinavian blood has a hard time with!

Personally I never really liked AE content for the same reason I never liked running Oroburos content; you're locked into it unable to do anything else for that time and your progress isn't saved to pick up on it later. Which is fine if you're on a scrapper that can tear through just about anything, not so much if you're on a defender.

Doom!

Seriously, though... I'll be happy to be surprised by some news (whenever we get it) indicating that GR has CoV-like levels of content... it's just looking less and less likely.

Also, look around! Long time players are burning out... if Scooter's right and we won't see GR go live until 9/2010, then I predict a significant dip in the player population that won't reverse itself until late 2010.

Honestly, I've been where you guys are and had considered hanging it up. Then I 'tried' new things. I tried pvp, I tried min/maxing, I tried all X TF, I made new challenges for myself: ok the ITF is no longer a challenge but trying to beat it in less then 40 minutes is a challenge then when 40 minutes wasn't a challenge lets try to beat it in 30, then 20, you get the point.

I have attempted to find new reasons to stick around:

1 50 of every AT (still missing that darn crab, because I was suppose to be playing with someone)
1 50 of every power type (down to /fire, /ice for blasters, bots, ninja, merc for MM, Crab, ice/axe tank, and Kat for Scrapper)

Honestly, you guys should try pvp the fun stuff not the (as peril called it) try hard stuff.

It's not so much of playing AE content as simply trying something different. Despite all my comments, I don't hate the ITF at all and will admit that it's actually a well designed Task Force outside of the lagRomans and that's probably solveable by simply mixing in some that don't have capes. It's just that it's frustrating to contant hear calls for ITF and maybe a select few others, no one will try other TFs/SFs and then people will be complaining about being bored. I've been setting up PUG Strike Forces recently and there's a ton of players who don't even know the Ouroborus SFs exist.

And I must be pretty jacked up because for the most part I utterly suck at using my scrapper. Defenders may be slow but I don't see myself faceplanting constantly. And maybe that's just a problem with how I play since maybe I'm not reckless enough or my build is wrong but I personally get tired of hearing the whole "scrappers are teh invincible" thing when my experiences don't mirror that.

I...apologize for the threadjack.

MG, this is my point. I'm all for the adage of "expect the worse and all your surprises will be pleasant ones," but expecting the worse just to expect the worse is over the top. A September 2010 release for GR is doomcrying for the sake of doomcrying, to me. Late Q1 beta for GR is March... to expect it not to go live for another 4-5 months after that is really, really, really expecting the worst.

I know that development schedules generally take longer than first announcements, but GR does not have THAT much more to go before they hit their announced dates... this isn't like Nintendo saying "the next Zelda game will hit maybe/possibly late this year" (when it's January 1st).

Anyway, enough on that. I'm worn out after work and am probably making too much of things.

EB, I know what you mean about wanting to be able to treat AE missions like regular missions. That would help a lot. Even so, most arcs in the AE are going to be doable in 20-60 minutes, so it isn't too much of an "enter and not return for hours" thing like TFs generally are. My arc uses all five mission and it took me (solo and in teams) only about 35-45 minutes, and that was before I shortened a few of them.

Nobody is willing to take over the reins of a large SG and VG?

AE should have really worked better, but I feel that it's both too restrictive and not restrictive enough at the same time. The teaming is TF like which is always an annoyance for the kinds of fluid teams that seem to work so well in CoH otherwise. But you're so restricted in what you can do and at the same time a lot of the talk about it gets dominated by whatever the farmers are doing.

I still think Paragon missed the ball when they didn't include a base-editor like system in it to allow people to design custom rooms.

That said, custom groups are neat and I do like playing AE missions, but it just isn't enough to keep the game fresh for me. I wanted the storyline to move forward, for "The Coming Storm" to finally come, for the Shard to do something, etc... To get fresh TFs every three months (or, every $45, if you think about it that way) that move the story along. Too much stagnation has convinced me to switch to month-to-month billing, and seriously consider stopping that when April rolls around and my 7 month sub finally runs out. This is not a new complaint either. I've been grumbling about the glacial pace of updates for almost 2 years now. I remember way back in the day of single digit issues where you got a comic in the mail and new content was showering down constantly. Those days are gone.

The worst part: They released a paid expansion that would have been perfect for my most played main and I couldn't be bothered to buy it because I've put maybe 10 hours into the game in the past two months.

Thanks for playing my arc, EB. I reworked it a month back for the AE competition Aeon was running... I should announce that so more people play it and give it a try again... I think the storyline is stronger and the gameplay is more fun (though it is capped out at level 30, as you noted... darn Warrios just don't go any higher, and they're needed for the story).

I really should try for another arc again. I do have some ideas, I just haven't had time (when I have had time fore creativity, I've been trying to focus on my fiction writing).

Zamuel has good arcs, too. I just played through "Dhahabu Kingdom and the Indelible Curse of Hate: #367872" and I liked it. He has well thought out custom mobs and uses the maps available quite well. I'd also recommend checking out the AE section of the forums, and the dev choices... Aeon has been picking a lot lately, and that part of the forums usually brings out the writers.

Kong, you're right, I'd love to make a map using the base editor stuff... they do have a variety of tilesets, etc. Though I have noticed bases with a lot of stuff in them tend to get laggy, so I wonder if they were worried about that. I would definitely pass that idea on, though. I actually haven't heard that voiced anywhere, and it's a good one.

I do know what you mean about content. I've been wanting more for awhile now, as nice as I14 and I16 were for customization.

Also, I would help you out, but I'm already a part of a big SG and VG, and I have my own personal SGs going already that I don't want to give up after all that work.

Unfortunately, it falls into the "they expect us to exploit it" problem. Most authors won't but the I14 fiasco gives the devs a somewhat reasonable cause to worry. In fact, Aeon drastically misunderstood the question/request when asked about spawn control. Most merely want more control over the spawn points that already exist while he thought it meant 100% exact control of placement.

Posted

I would think the easiest way to do it would be to just have "spawn markers" and that every room needs X of them, based on the size of the room.

Unfortunatly, this would be exploited instantly, as people build jails and fill them with mostly melee critters so they can AoE them to death over and over again.

That's why we can't have nice things.

Kong, I think most folks that have been around 5 years feel the same way... I know I've cut my CoH playtime considerably over the last year. All my friends slowly filtered out, and I've played less and less as a result. I'd take it, but I really question my longterm viability at this point. Besides, I'll be in Afghanistan again come May.
