  1. I'll be around, up for whatever tonight...

Maybe we should do something retro next week, like namesake toons or original Isos & a classic TF or Respc trial.
  2. I'm not going to be able to make it tonight.

This type of behavior was my sole reason in creating my Internet Toughguy toon. His bio:

That was my favorite mastermind toon, Thugs/Dark

  4. I'm wondering what all the anticipation was about? Anticlimatic to say the least.

Still, a couple gems in there :P I don't know which is sadder, the fact that you kept notes and posted them, or that I actually took the time to speed read them.
  5. Is there any plan for Isos now that we've come to the end of the current run?

In an effort to fix my PC, I did something really stupid... Now, I've built PCs since the early 90s, and I work on HPC linux clusters. So, I guess I'm kinda like that FBI weapons trainer that shot himself in front of a class :P

I bought a new power supply, thinking it may be related to my random reboot problem. I got a Corsair 750 jobber with the modular power cables. I was replacing an old Thermaltake modular 600.

I swapped out the power supply, and plugged everything back in, and hit the power. Something didn't smell right... Oh crap... in my haste, I forgot to swap out the power lead going to my SSDs. I toasted 2 SSDs and my DVD drive. Remember kids, there is no industry standard for modular power plugs in the new power supplies.... each vendor has their own pinouts.

I relate this just as a warning for anyone in a hurry... It can happen to a pro

I have a couple new SSDs on the way, so I'll be rebuilding on Monday. Good thing my last backup Friday, right before I smoked my drives. Cya Wed

Yeah, I kinda figured from the video that the big ship was the end game. I think my current run is hosed. I got one Psi troop & laser weaponry. Don't see how it would be possible to beat anything tougher than the overseer ship with my current tech situation.

I think I'm going to restart now that I have a better grasp of what is going on. I'll take my time, and just because something is listed "priority" doesn't really mean drop everything else.

I actually don't even remember C4, but fine, maybe they should have included it.

I definitely agree with you about not being able to target the environment. It would have been pretty simple to implement as well. That's an omission.

This makes no sense. What isn't X-COM about it?

    Squad-based turn-based tactical combat? Yes!
Research, Resource Management and Base Building? Yes!
Building out fighters to take on UFOs? Yes!
Varied mission types and maps? Yes... actually more variety than the original!

The camera controls and probably use some work (I don't even know you could rotate the camera until two days ago), but this is just nitpicking. I'm sure you'll enjoy Xenonauts more, but this is really a slick, AAA implementation of X-COM.

I'm not saying I don't think it's a fun time sink... Just no successor to X-Com of old. Btw, that Col you just lost was your one "guaranteed" Psi trooper.

I ran up the tech tree too fast, and have advanced the game to nearly imposible difficulty. I did the requested objective missions asap, and captured everything they wanted. I just took on an overseer ship packed with Muton Elites, Ethreal, and a frickin Sectopod... with laser weaponry. I didn't bring my one medic, and everyone was wrecked but managed to survive. My sniper was critial for 3 turns before I plugged the last Muton with run/gun from all three of my assualts within sprinting distance... I was praying I could cover the ground, it was like a superbowl touchdown moment :P

    Semi-Spoiler

I really really think I need to restart and take my time building up tech and troops. I doubt I could take out the new and interesting thing that appears when I captured that overseer ship with my current miserable technology.

What is it missing? Annoying AP fiddling instead of a steamlined move and shoot system? Keeping track of EVERY DAMN MAGAZINE of ammunition in the base(s)? Orchestrating a crew of 12 sweeping a map, because some Sectoid got stuck on a roof somewhere?

This is not only true to the spirit of X-COM, it's better than the original!

Well, lets see... where to begin. How about the whole console interface... I hate it really. Dumbed down, oh I dunno, everything. Guess this is like Idiocracy for gamers...

Why can't a make a rookie a sapper with a bag of grenades? Where's the C4 damnit? You mean, I can't intentionally shoot that wall out to expose the bad guy? There's so much that's been hosed, it is not XCom at all. Don't even get me started on the ****** camera angles / controls. 9Gb of the 12.7Gb install is video clips... wow, just wow. It's a new game, and one I'm happy to play.

When Xenonaughts finishes up, that will be the successor I was looking forward to. It's a shame it's being built on a kickstarter budget, so it'll never be as polished as the big boys.

  11. I resolved the issue I was having. It was the most F'd up thing I've ever encountered whicle troubleshooting a PC. After doing everything I could think of, I started looking for logs in the applications / games that were having issues. I finally stumbled across a DX log that showed an issue creating a hook for a direct input device. Anyway, long story short, I replaced my old legacy PS2 style keyboard with a new USB one and the problem is fixed....

That said, I've played the new X-Com for about 8 hours, and while it's entertaining, it is X-Com in name only... Nothing like the original at all. I've got a laundry list of issues I have with it, but it's still fun in it's own right.

I got a rookie with a co-workers exact name today... I wonder how far he's going to make it :P

    Anyway....

I give up on TSW all together. I can't get it to run past the new character intro videos. Something just does not like my system, and I'm tired of trying to figure it out. No other game has ever had a problem like this before for this particular system.

    I got the new X-Com on pre-order anyway :P

  13. Runs good on new vid card. Still hacked off my handle got poached. Will poke around a bit to see what it's like.
  14. Will try it again once I get a new video card installed, suspect my old GTX260 just aint up to the task... :P

  15. I tried it, or should I say, I tried to try it. After the 15Gb download & setup, everytime I tried to start it, my system would reboot. I updated my video drivers to the latest Nvidia drivers, no change. I re-installed the latest DX from microsoft, no change. I finally switched the options to DX9, and my system didn't reboot... it just froze. I was able to alt-tab out, and kill it. I tried re-installing it, and having it validate etc... It's just not liking my machine for whatever reason. At this point I gave up, and deleted it.

  16. OMG.... I had no idea, just put BoneBaby in google....sigh.

After the first hit, which is a scrap book retailer, I'm aparently a not to well known rap star...

  17. I was thinking of trying the free trial... but someone has taken my name already! Really? I thought BoneBaby was rather unique... sigh...

I may or may not try it now.

  18. Why not bring back an unfinished Iso? Would seem a fitting end after all.
  19. I had some pretty hard feelings at first. It was a shock, and I didn't really see it comming the way it did. I felt the game could go on for quite some time as it seemed to get better over it's run. They kept it up to date with graphics tweeks, and the physX stuff over the years. Sigh...

I had a pretty long post thought out, but in the end... I guess it doesn't matter really.

Like Ham, I was lured here in the begining by some counter strike clan mates. They all dropped off within a year, and I was left to my own devices. I will relate where my namesake came from though, as I find it amusing to this day...

So, me and a couple guys got this idea after seeing the Skulls in Perez Park for the first time. We all made "Bone" caracters, there was Bone Mommy, Bone Stepchild, and me Bonebaby. We'd go around Perez and watch people fiting the skulls mobs. Bone Mommy would yell profanities at the Bone Daddys as they were getting beat up, and me and Bone Stepchild would cry and ask them not to hurt our Daddy :P

Well they all quit playing and drifted on, Bonebaby stayed and played on. I remember tanking for one of the first successful public hami raids, and all the tankers were yelling nerf on regen scrappers! The nerf finally happened, and I didn't really play Bone much afterwards. He really was stupidly overpowered, but I couldn't find it in me to play something that was such a shadow of the former glory. I mean, I don't think I died once until I was in my very late 40s...

Anyway, this ended up a lot longer than I really wanted. Thanks for Isolators Ham, it's probably the only thing that kept me "in the game" for the last year or so. I will miss everybody when the servers go dark.

I'll run in Isos to the end, that's about it I suppose
  20. We had a good run going on my team last night, we were really mowing down the tough mobs in Crotoa missions. I had to bail early though, I got paged in

I'll have more 30/35 damages in the bins tonight, seems there was a run on em :P

  24. I went with a staff/willpower scrapper modeled after the "starwars kid" of youtube fame. Though... I couldn't quite get the body type in the character generator. I guess all superheroes have to have some sort of muscle definition according to the developers

Anyway, should be fun. I don't know if I'll make a few of the starting sessions as I will be moving and starting a new job mid July.
  25. Sorry.... Been kinda taking a break from CoH and only playing on Iso nights for awhile. Because of this I seem to have the time to slum around and try some open source stuff and check out kickstarters etc... I've been playing UFO:AI lately, it's pretty good for an X-Com fix though it has it's share of annoying bugs and crashes.
