OpenGL crash w/ Nvidia drivers
I recently came back to CoH and I crash every now and again due to, what is stated to be, an Nvidia openGL driver error. I have an AMD quad core & nvidia 260gtx card, running on Win7 64bit.
I was wondering if this is commonplace? Is there any known hotfix for this problem? I am running driver version 195.62, which is the version just prior to the one released a couple days ago; I am foregoing an update for the time being because I stumbled upon a post saying the new driver has the same problem. Anyway... um, HALP PLS! |
Short version, if you are using a 64bit OS, use an Intel or an ATi graphics card, or pray that Apple decides to contribute code to Nouveau.
Long Version: If you don't have the option of switching out your Nvidia for an ATi graphics card, you are going to be stuck with playing driver roulette and trying out different drivers from Nvidia's archive: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us : I'd suggest going all the back to the 180 series. Those tend to not crash as much.
Disputed. I've only seen unverified anecdotal evidence for problems with modern nVidia drivers. I've been running the latest version of them, betas and all, through Vista, 7 beta, 7 release candidate, and 7 RTM; anecdotally, I can say it's been perfect.
The take-home message here is, your mileage may vary. Same goes for ATi.
EDIT: I'm a bit offended you recommended Intel over nVidia. D:
Necrobond - 50 BS/Inv Scrapper made in I1
Rickar - 50 Bots/FF Mastermind
Anti-Muon - 42 Warshade
Ivory Sicarius - 45 Crab Spider
Aber ja, natrlich Hans nass ist, er steht unter einem Wasserfall.

We'll see....
yeah I only ever have issues with CoH on Ati, only one system here uses an ati card now, the rest are nVidia, I dont think i want to use Ati anymore, honestly.

Might be a good idea to post a CoH Helper log.
Rather than bash the drivers, let's see if we can find out why this is happening. Is Windows completely up to date?

We'll see....
Yes, Windows 7 is up to date, so far as I know.
It's important to note that the crash happens infrequently, maybe once per very long play session. Also, it seems that sometimes aero is temporarily disabled while running CoH and sometimes it isn't - somewhat inconsistent. Anyway, here is the helper log you asked for...

Should it be showing 4Gb of video memory?? or is that just showing what would be shared available?

The reason is Dx10 and Dx11 have built in video memory management that uses system memory as a texture swap file automagically without a game developer needing to write one themselves.

i had to back down to the 191.07 drivers for the same problem to be fixed, i have win7 64 with a 285 ,i started getting the problem when i upgraded to the new 196 series
be sure to run a drvier cleaner of some sort

Hmm, thanks for the info, hobbit. I don't like changing video drivers because Nvidia is inconsistent at best when it comes to aspect ratio scaling (monitor doesnt have it). Might have to decide between the lesser of the two evils...
Alrighty, uninstalled 195.62, ran driver sweeper, and installed 191.07... if I don't reply again, you'll all know it worked
Thanks everyone!
edit... well, it's certainly alt-tabbing a lot more smoothly !
And, the result is... no dice.
Crashed earlier after installing the older driver. Sigh. Well, if nothing else, it's weak excuse for me to buy an ATI 5870 card.
Hmmm...you may want to download Speedfan or a similar heat monitoring program and check the heat of your card. My roommate started having similar issues with his card, just playing City mind you, before we replaced the fans in his case. I'm not saying that it has to be heat, but it's something worth checking before you go out and buy a new card. Heat can produce some odd errors out of the nVidia cards.
Temps are fine, idle @38 C, CoH load @50ish C. At least it doesnt crash often; like I said, once or so per very long play session. Odd thing is, there's seemingly no pattern - I can be in the midst of chaos vying to help the team survive, or simply moving around inside the university.
Very irritating.
