Rare recipe weight project

Another_Fan in this thread suggested copying a char over to test several times in order to see what you might get using random rolls on the rare recipe table. While macskull doesn't think this is a good indication of what you might get, I disagree. In fact, I think gec72 had a good idea about using that method to try and determine the drop weights. The plan is as follows. Earn lots of merits on a char. Copy them to test lots of time. Roll lots of random rolls. Compile logs. Analyze results.

The first big question is what level range(s) to use? According to ParagonWiki, there are 33 recipes in the 10-14 level range, up to a high of 106 recipes in the 30-34 range, and back down to 64 in the 46-50 range. It would be nice if entire categories were all rated the same, as we could just use the lowest level range and a fairly small sample size. For example, 500 rolls on the 10-14 range should average 15 of each assuming equal weighting. I think that's a good area to focus most of the rolls, just to give us something to look at. Any patterns should be obvious. Then we use another 500 rolls at the 46-50 range to see if there are any unexpected results.

As to how to accomplish all this, anyone have a char with loads of merits on hand and want to offer their services? Just do as many rolls as possible in the 10-14 level range and post the results. Then if you're not burned out, do the 46-50 range too. Otherwise, I can run a Posi a day and get 594 on a char in 9 days. Then 18 copies will get me 522 random rolls total.

I have started copying my stalker across. He has rather a lot (about 1000 on hand IIRC)

Since my hard drive went boom I don't have a current test server installation. I'll see how long it takes to patch.

(copy seems slow today). Test is patched and he still hasn't made it accross once.

Don't know if this is significant but might be interesting to see what you get by either clicking quickly several rolls in a row, and then doing it at a more leisurely pace.

How about you post them here, but just the 10-14 rolls for now. I'm only looking for totals of raw data.

Last beta alot of characters were given a ton of merits along with the level bumps. I am sure there are tons of dead merits over on test already if you can get people to go check.

As soon as I dig up the spreadsheets, I'll post the results of hundreds of random rolls from a similar experiment during the spring/summer of 2009.

I also would be curious if there is any effect if you click the roll button really fast or just on a more leisurely basis.

I will say I ran out of merits after the 24th roll...so I logged that char out and logged in another random villain that had 9999 merits and rolled the last recipe....which was the Neuronic Shutdown: Acc/Hold/Rech

Okay, well that's all 500...I uploaded the data to Google and here's what I found out:

As you can see it's definitely not an even weight. I only got 3 of some where I got 30+ of others. Interesting, no?

I just did a quick scan...the recipe that I only got 3 of out of 500, was the Theft of Essence: Acc/End/Rech ones. Now looking at it, I only got the Acc/End/Rech recipes when I clicked every 10 secs...never got one when I clicked as fast as I could....hmmm...going to see if that's the case with others that I got very few of.

The Debilitative Action proc is also I got 3 of, and I did get one when I clicked as fast as possible...but the other 2 when clicking every 10 seconds.

I got a total of 4 of the Cacophony: Acc/Confuse/Rech recipes and got all 4 when clicking as fast as possible...never every 10 secs.

I got a total of 5 of the Cloud Senses: Acc/End/Rech recipes and got 3 when clicking every 10 secs, 2 when I clicked as fast as possible.

I seriously doubt clicking as fast as possible vs every so often (10 secs or less than that) matters but it is interesting to see stuff like that.

Looking at the rolls, I can make a few guesses...

Individual IOs probably aren't weighted, or are weighted the same as other IOs in the same set. In every set where there are 2 IOs, both have fairly similar results. Cacophany A/C/R had 4 rolls while the proc was 7. Call to Arms E/D/R has 21 rolls while the proc was 14. Debilitative Action was 6 to 3, Eradication was 22 to 15, etc. A larger sample size would probably make this clearer, but probably isn't needed. This logically makes sense, as the devs probably weighted things based on the sets. I can't see a good reason to make say 1 of 2 rare IOs in a set drop more or less frequently, unless the Devs cave to user demand.

Some sets are obviously dropping more often. Debilitative Action had 9 between 2 IOs, while Impervious Skin had 32 for a single IO.

Multiple sets in the same category are similar. Basilisk's Gaze has 24/14, while Neuronic Shutdown is 17/26. Unfortunately that's the only category in this level range with multiple sets.

In retrospect, level 15-19 might have been a better choice. There are 45 IOs in that range, but it includes Defense and Resistance IOs with 2 per set. That would let us compare for example the single IO in Impervious Skin against the two in Impervium Armor.

As to weights, it looks like some of the status protection sets are have lower drop weights, including Fear, Sleep, Immob, and Confuse. Holds, stuns, and Slows seem surprisingly high. Recharge Intensive Pets are higher than regular pets.

Since I've seen some people recommend rolling on the 10-14 table, I assume there are a couple good ones there. I believe the two Basilisk's Gaze IOs are expensive, as well as the Blessing of the Zephyr. Two of those three may have above average weights. But I'd have to check the market to see which other ones sell for high prices, and thus whether or not the recommendation is warranted.

Well I know that when I was IO'ing out my Fire/Earth Assault Dom. about 1-2 months ago, Basilik's Gaze recipes were quite expensive (don't remember exact amount but definitely in the millions). BotZ KB procs are all 100 mil + (all lvl ranges, from lvl 10 to 50) which actually kind of made me sad a little bit since I need 2 KB procs on my one hero to complete him...if only there was a way to transfer those merits to live :P

So comparing the 1021 rolls across all ranges (except 15-19) with 500 rolls in the 10-14 range, it seems likely that each drop range has its own "drop type" weight.

Came to this post late... going thru an audit at work, but I have a toon with about 2000 merits red side from running TF's that I can transfer to test. I am not sure if I have time to run a sample tonight, if not then I will run over the weekend and post here.

I think level 15-19 would show us a bit more than level 10-14 currently. I'm curious about the weighting between sets with one versus two items, as well as the weighting between categories with one versus two sets. The info from 10-14 gives us a baseline, but we need a different set to see if weights are based on category, set, or IO.

There are 2 Immob recipes in the 10-14 range for a total of 33 (as per Wiki).

I only accounted for 1 above.
Not a big deal, since Immob has a low distribution across the board, but I've accounted for the change here locally in my overall tracker and will incorporate it in following posts.

Caveat: I've analyzed 500 rolls in the 10-14 range, but only 320 rolls (170 from Hell_Jumper and 150 of my own) in the 15-19 range so far.

Preliminary Observation: There appears to be a different distribution pattern between 10-14 and 15-19.

Also, from looking at the data so far, most drop types appear to be "artificially" adjusted up and down by the Devs, which would make sense (based upon demand and usage) and IIRC is in-line with Posi's? Synapse's? statement about the merit system design changes from early 2009.
