I think I have good news: check the list with your 361 rolls added. While the very last recipe (Theft of Essence: Acc/End/Rech) still ranks at 0.3x, the ones above it are 0.6x, 0.7x, 0.7x, 0.8x, 0.8x, 0.8x... the bottom one is probably an aberration due to low sample size, and as more rolls are added, the bottom will trend more and more towards 1.0x. Maybe another thousand rolls will do it?
My only concern with going through all of the effort will be that if the weightings get "tweaked" because we've uncovered something that needed fixing then all of the accumulated data will no longer be applicable to the updated game. |
I wouldn't dissuade anyone from contributing good data anyhow, but it would be nice to have a clear sense of where we would like to go with it. One of the things I'd like to know is if we have a clear consensus on when is enough per category (obviously it will never be too much). Is the 500 rolls enough? 1000? 10,000? |
Since almost all of the recipes in the 10-14 range already have 2 digits, I'd say 500 more rolls would do it, 1000 to be sure. The 20-24 roll, however, has a lot of recipes that rolled less than 10 times; so I'd say probably 1500 to 2000 more rolls. The 25-29 roll has even more recipes in the single digits, so at least 2500 more seem likely.

And once again, the lowest-ranked recipes keep trending towars 1.0x. The bottom one jumped from 0.3x to 0.6x, the three above it went to 0.8x, and then two more reached for 0.9x. I think it's safe to say that the 10x range we were getting before was simply due to lack of data.
I think we can clearly call Impervious Skin: End/Rech/Res as the only 5x weight in the 10-14 range, as the next recipe in the table has a 4.1x weight. The rest of the breaks aren't so clear, but you can "kinda" see them. Great job there, Pum.

Since almost all of the recipes in the 10-14 range already have 2 digits, I'd say 500 more rolls would do it, 1000 to be sure. The 20-24 roll, however, has a lot of recipes that rolled less than 10 times; so I'd say probably 1500 to 2000 more rolls. The 25-29 roll has even more recipes in the single digits, so at least 2500 more seem likely.

These are the cases that I'd feel better about if they were trending towards 1.0x or 2.0x for sample sizing.
I'd hope that Synapse would look at me with pity if I decided to roll and delete all my merits on live accidentally as well as restoring my toon if I did this on the live server...
Edit: It would interesting to tie this to the [rough] market value to see the most efficient way of monetizing merits. Eg., is rolling 1000 merits better than purchasing 5 LotG 7.5%? Which level category yields the best bang for the buck?

I decided long ago that buying the LOTGs or Miracles was the wisest investment, but I'm more than willing to do the math once we have firm numbers.

I'm going to assume that the weight for a given IO does not change based on the level. It may show up more or less often based on how big the pool is for a given level. For example, a Freebird +Stealth will show up twice as often in the range 15-19 as it would in the range 30-34, just because there are roughly twice as many IOs in the 30-34 pool.
Given that assumption, we can get weights for every IO by concentrating on the 25-29 and 46-50 ranges. The 25-29 range will give us all of the low and mid range IOs, while the 46-50 range will cover the remaining ones. Covering just these two ranges will also let us see if my assumption is wrong. There are about 40 IOs that overlap, and we'll see if the weights are the same for those in the different level ranges. Plus we already have a lot of data on the lower ranges to compare them against.
So everyone, please concentrate on the 25-29 and 46-50 ranges.

I did some weight comparisons based on the level ranges we already have, and I'm tossing the data here for discussion. Excuse the commas as decimal separators, it's what Latin America uses and I don't feel like fixing it manually right now.

Since people who PVP are more likely to slot lower level recipes, this would seem to confirm that the recipes are weighted individually in each level range. The Fly and TP stealth procs, less common in PVP, appear to remain 1x all around.

Based on what I've seen so far, I don't think the weight for all recipes is the same across all level ranges. Certainly there's a lot that keep their weight on all level ranges, but I think that assuming all of them do is a bad idea.

I'm assuming everyone is assuming the reward tables are still constructed that way, and that is the premise behind the assumption that all reward multipliers have to be whole numbers.

in the table? Seems odd to me... I suspect they picked integer weights because that keeps them from going crazy with overly fine tuning. "Yeah, we want a few more of these" means a 4, "We want a WHOLE LOT of these" is a 5, "nobody in the world wants that" means a 1. As opposed to making it "50" vs "52" vs "49."

I have this memory of a Dev (likely Synapse) posting a drop table around a year ago. In it, there was a column for weighting that was all 1's, and he stated that it didn't have to be that way, but that it was out of a desire to "have everyone be equally likely to get a drop they can use" (which actually is a goal that weighting has helped us move towards).
This memory, I am learning as I get older, does not mean that it actually happened.

The 10-14 level Zephyr has a 1 in 24 chance of appearing, while the 25-29 Zephyr has a 1 in 75 chance of appearing (if you were to look at it as 2x as opposed to 1.7x). If you were looking to roll and get a Zephyr knockback recipe, the 10-14 is 3 times more likely to appear than in 25-29.
So catching up...is the theory then that you should be able to do a number of rolls for a certain range, find the lowest incidence of a recipe and conclude that that recipe has just one entry in the table*, and then all others in that range should be an integer multiple of that? Then once you find the "multiplier" for a particular recipe you can assume that it is the same for all level ranges?
*I suppose it's possible that even the rarest recipe is in the table more than one time, but I kinda hope that isn't the case, just to make things a little easier
edit: yeah, and I guess if that is the assumption, TopDoc is right in that rolls should be limited to the smallest number of ranges that cover all recipes

AFAIK, the original Pool C table was not weighed at all (except for maybe uniques and LotGs), so giving a relatively "unworthy" recipe such a heavy weight could have been the only reasonable alternative to adding another Range Damage recipe set at this range and/or reshuffling the 10-14 range itself.

I wanted to help with this project. The rarest recipe I currently have is a purple Confuse proc that I'm waiting to slot when my current character eventually dings 50. I printed it out, weighed it carefully, and can conclusively say it ways roughly as much as the paper it was printed on.

What interests me the most is how weighty some resistance and defense recipes seem to be, especially when they supercede melee damage and range damage, which I assumed would carry the heaviest weight.
And slow sets like Impeded Swiftness and Pacing of the Turtle seem much to high to be properly weighted . . . . UNLESS . . . . what if they based their weighting off of datamining of how many powers on existing characters could take a certain IO.
If instead of adding up available powers it added up powers actually taken by players, then the prevalence of scrappers and fire/kin controllers could account for these seemingly odd deviations.

The Character Ccopy tool finally let a copy of my main through, so I added another 150 rolls to Level 10-14 to try to push the numbers closer to integers. There are 9 recipes that very stubbornly refuse to get in line for an integer, and I'm crossing my fingers that a truckload more data will show them belonging to one grouping or another. While I work on that, everybody else please follow TopDoc's advice and work on 25-29.

10-14 range. Sorry that this is using the 7200 merit troller, my badge toon has fewer merits than my other toons but can carry the most recipes, which makes it less wearing to do the rolls.:
I'm not sure if Synapse would give a thumbs up to say that everything will be OK if we do a single large sample or not, but it would be my preference if he did so we can go hog wild on the rest of the groups.
I wouldn't dissuade anyone from contributing good data anyhow, but it would be nice to have a clear sense of where we would like to go with it. One of the things I'd like to know is if we have a clear consensus on when is enough per category (obviously it will never be too much). Is the 500 rolls enough? 1000? 10,000?
