How am I in debt?

Low levels it wasn't bad. It hurt in the 30s - of course, at that point, we also tended to have a content gap at 38. Running out of things to do (other than run someone else's missions - no newspapers, of course - and rerun a SF) was bad enough. Running out earlier because of debt - with no 1/2 debt indoors, no patrol XP, no form of "debt protection," no patrol XP and double the debt cap? Ow.

But yes, debt these days is definitely not much to worry about. You can't accumulate as much, you probably earn half as much per death, and you generally earn more XP per time than people used to. That's not just because of Patrol XP, but also because rewards have been raised, especially in low and middle levels.
Debt now... pretty much isn't a penalty. You rarely see it, when you do it's been softened considerably, and you're out of it *fast.*

Raise your hand if you've been at the old (1.5 million) debt cap. Raise the other if it was in one go at a hami raid

Now with both hands up... gimme your wallet. >.>

Since I only had one hand up...No.

1) Debt allows you to gather more influence/infamy before the next level
2) Paying off debt gets you badges
3) Debt slows your experience POINT gain, but allows you to gain more actual experience.
4) Chicks dig debt.

lol - My one (and only) Hami raid back in I4 qualifies. I'm not sure if it did
hit the full debt-cap, but it did take a couple full days of gameplay to clear it,
so it was there, or close to it.

Of course, back in I4, my toon also only had 3 or 4 Million on him... You could beat
that with a single sale on the market today, so no inf for you even if my hands are up.

Of course, some players actually debt-capped intentionally - to earn inf
for shinies and/or avoid out-levelling contacts. I had one toon that did that.

Cheers,
4

Hrmmm... Never though of it that way.

You are all forgetting one thing: Repeated death, even currently can provide enough debt to last multiple levels.

For instance, I have a dominator who dies at least 4 or 5 times per mission, often much more than that. Even in groups. Debt is still a massive pain for that character even under the current rules.

She picked up her third debt badge and the 1-hour mezzed badge (a not insignificant chunk of that from time spent stunned after using wakies with no breakfree) in the same mission right before hitting level 23. She is, I think, my only character with more progress on damage taken vs damage dealt. Though that is changing really fast now that I got her some AoE attacks.

I laugh at how often she gets dropped, because she still manages to be fun. And, as several have said, she's completed many more story arcs than the average character of her level.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

fighting Lost Aberrants, maybe? My Grav/Energy Dom has a few issues with that particular opponent. Oh, and Arachnos Huntsmen and Fortunatas. Dang Mez resistance.

That's still a lot of death. I have a dom in the 30s and he never died close to that much getting there. That's even though he did it in the days before recent buffs or even IOs. (Not that most people's characters probably get a lot of IO investment before 30, but just to be clear about his level of power.)

I think the only time he died 3-4 times in quick succession was trying to solo the SupahFreak EB.

If I remember the debt cap is about 40% of what it once was. If you are always in debt than I would have to suggest that you either reevaluate your tactics or difficulty setting for that character.

I can't play my sonic/electric defender the same way and with the same difficulty as my katana/regen scrapper (with reckless abandon aka scrapper lock).

For me scrapper lock is not reckless abandon. It's more of state where there are largely two things around me: things to kill and invalid targets. On a team i still look for the greatest overall threat and kill it first, then the next greatest and so on, but will switch targets if a teammate's health is dropping rapidly. Solo, or if the rest of the team got wiped anyway, it's simply in order of threat. Either way scrapperlock mean attacking until i run out of valid targets.
