Server Transfer Stories

I mostly play on Virtue, and I like to play my 50's at least a bit. I hami raid at least once a week. Most of my Virtue 50's are scrappers, and of the few that aren't, one is a character I never play anyway. So all of my hami raids on Virtue have been with scrappers.

I had a nice level 50 tank on another server... and a 50 blaster, and a 45 defender. I'd often thought it might be fun to move them to Virtue so I could raid with one of them instead.

So, after spending Tuesday transferring characters, I log in Wednesday just as a hami raid is forming. I brought my 50 blaster. It was a good night to do this, as there were ultimately 22 scrappers in zone (out of 50 max). There weren't a lot of blasters. Our assault team had four, and eventually there was a second assault team.

We cleared all of the blue mitos each wave before the first green had even been brought down. ^_^ I'd say we did well! I also managed to not die during the raid itself (evacless even -- I did die once during monster clearing).

That qualified as "instant server transfer gratification" in my book. ^_^

In general I had good luck transferring my characters. Two did not need a name change, and for the blaster I decided I could live with "Serpentine-Fire" instead of Serpentine Fire.

I also transferred several mid-level characters from servers I never play on to Victory, which is pretty much my secondary server. I had to change the name of one, but she didn't have such a great name to start with, and for another I forced a name change (had a stupid name I didn't like) by creating a temporary alt on Victory with the same name.

I'm curious how things have gone so far for other people?

I haven't gotten a chance to play any of the 6 toons I transfered to Champion yet. They are all toons I've "retired" but I would like to see how the population on that server is.

The only story I have is that I should have done a name check before the transfer. I transfered my Dark/Dark defender named Eternal Rest only to log onto Champion to find him named Eternal Rest1. Although I like the name it's not a big deal as I hadn't played him in over a year.

So my advice to you kiddies is don't be a n00b like me, do a name check before you do a transfer!

I decided to use this opprotunity to do what I'd been wanting to do for a while but could never hope to afford to do, which is have my heroes and villains being on their own separate servers. I had three villains on Protector and two heroes on Guardian, so I did a trade. Now Protector is my hero-exclusive server and Guardian is my villain-exclusive server.

A part of me is tempted to buy some slots on virtue and consolidate for population and being around moar RP as many of my RP mates elsewhere have moved to other games. But... bases and super groups keep me from making the move. And I already payed for a few renames a few years back. Soooooo... I won't be doing much with this gift. But it is cool to see others getting something out of it!

Well, I moved 6 of my biggest guys from Triumph to Virtue. No much story here other than being forced to rename a character. It hurt me a lot to rename Starsman, but the choice was a bit natural (for me) and I renamed him Starsman Prime.

Re-rolling the name in Triumph to keep it for myself, though. I'm greedy like that.

I guess here is a story: I used to be part of Global Heroics in Triumph a long long time ago. Got kicked due to inactivity, not to fit more players but to fit more alts. The character requirements for GH, though, meant that my character now was out of place (naming convention was Ms/Mr Countryname) for her concept so I retired her until I was able to justify renaming costs. With this, I just moved and renamed as the name was already also taken. That character may see resurrection and run the rest of her way to level 50 now (stuck at 47.)

My current group already has a Virtue branch so I'm just consolidating all my active characters there.

I used up all my 2 free Virtue slots and my 4 remaining vet reward slots. I still have more characters I will move but can't move any more for 6 more days so I will be holding on that for a week.

Oh, and yesterday was my birthday, I think the devs knew!

I have only done one transfer.

I had a lonely little Electric Blaster on Justice, but I never played her enough to find a community. My original idea had been to have a couple of characters on all servers so that I would always have someone to play when we have servers down (like {rotector & Champion right now).

So I moved her over to Liberty, where I have a nice 2-person SG and an active global channel. Maybe now, she will advance past level 13!

I've decided to move my villains over to Freedom, since it has a high redside population, and I have had problems with finding redside teams on other servers. That frees up some spots on Virtue, so I can move a few heroes from other servers, and still have room for making new alts.

I made the mistake of moving the wrong character off my home server. Moving back was easy enough but I was the owner of my SG. I came right back to find a player that I dont know well now has control. I lowered the time to demote leaders to one day in hopes that I can get it back. The other player does not log on that often so I am crossing my fingers that the tell I sent went through or his auto demotion kicks in and restores me to owner.

The other transfers went well though.

So there I was...

It was a cool evening, cool enough to be considered chilly, even here. Yeah, I know, people scoff at that coming from someone living in Florida, but I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I know winter, and this wasn't a "oh, it's less than 70 degrees, break out the parkas" Florida chill.

Of course, I don't have to shovel, so I'm not complaining. Just saying it was comfortably cool outside.

Not that I was experiencing it at that moment, of course. No, I found myself inside, at work. Now, yeah, I work at home, and it was slow, so that's another thing people scoff at, but I was still at work. Fortunately my "work" system and my "play" system are close together, so boredom's not an issue.

I took a little stroll through my character lists, noting with some amusement the number of full servers - even those I've bought extra slots for. Giving Going Rogue's future release, I decided I'd probably need more slots sooner than later - but I didn't need to take care of that now. Besides, they'd need to be added to both accounts. I mentally went through who might change sides - surprisingly, not many characters, though a few might find the vigilante lifestyle more to their liking.

Then I saw her.

Cold eyes glared out from under a mane of red hair, the rest of her face hidden behind a mask. I'd given her a name, even had her as an integral part of a story, but on what for me was a hero-centric server, I'd never gotten her past 17.

Caitlyn.

After all that work on the backstory, I could almost imagine her glaring out accusingly, asking why I hadn't played her more, why she wasn't even high enough to have Stamina - or even SOs. Why not a cape? Why was she sitting, mostly alone, neglected on redside with all the blueside activity I have on Guardian?

I knew what I had to do. Logging in with that character, I went through the base - just a few common IOs, nothing special there. I didn't have much of anything stored there, either. The base would be fine - there are still a few characters, it wouldn't disappear, a few desperate holdouts keeping watch until we breathe life into our villainous plans there once more.

But Caitlyn... she had more ahead of her. Logging out, I came back. I hovered my mouse over her name. "Your digital existance is about to get a bit more exciting." I moved my cursor over...

With the power of a digital deity, I ripped her from the world she knew. No longer would there be a Caitlyn Haruspica in the version of the world known as Guardian and sent her constituent atoms... well, bits and bytes... flying between the servers. She arrived, seconds later, on Victory, being joined to the HBNS faster than you could say "Server downtime." Her new life of chaos, mayhem, RP and hand-me-down INF had just begun.

I could swear I heard a chuckle of mischevious glee as I logged off once more.

(Hey, the OP *did* ask for stories!)

I've only done a couple transfers. I moved a couple of my little played villains on Liberty to Virtue to start a VG for the Screenshots and Fan Creations forum. I moved my level 50 Mastermind where I misspelled Sentinel as Sentinal and didn't realize it until she was 50, so haven't played her much since, but now she's Scarlet Deviant (in honor of Deviant Art), and I also moved my lowbie Soldier because I think I'll give her more playtime if I can get some easy teams.

Moved 13 toons yesterday on 3 accounts, all for improvements in my farms and my altitis/multiboxing team setups

But when can I move toons again on the main account (need to move 7-11 more)? Do I need to wait 7 days or can I do it already on Monday?

I haven't seen anything official, but I assume that the transfer tokens will be granted just like the costume change tokens: during server downtime. I would guess you get more on Thursday morning.

Seems like Eternal Rest is a great name for a character not played in a year!

anyway, being an EU player with less of a grasp of other languages than I do English, I'm not getting a huge amount of use out of this free transfer gesture. I may yet use it to rename a toon or two though.

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

I've changed my current tune and am actively looking for a fitting home on Virtue. But not having any great luck this far. In many ways Triumph (my first home) is still awesome, but playing in-character is pretty key to my deeper enjoyment of this game. And that is becoming harder and harder to come by on Tri in either structured or chance encounters.

So I'm seriously considering a big full move to Virtue. I'm trying to avoid starting over entirely, new characters and all, because at this point that will likely just drive me away from the game. This game still retains many exemplary qualities in my opinion, but the sense of freshness required for a total reboot on my part just isn't there.

But I have found what looks like will be a good home for four theme specific heroes going from Protector to Virtue. And I've several reasons to be optimistic on that front.

Admittedly, this whole process has been much more of an emotional roller coaster than I anticipated. I'm not sure which stings most: the prospect of losing four names (already checked on these), losing the SG base prestige or losing that old mostly inactive SG roster whose long list of names evoke so many memories. Before considering a jump, I don't think I was aware how deeply connected to my characters and sentimental I have become regarding some of my experiences over the years. Strange, huh?

The Virtue forum has a great name thread stickied at the top by the way. If you need to come up with new names for characters transferring to Virtue, there are people there who can help immensely.

I've only moved one character, about a year ago. I have an entire family of characters, a mother, father, two daughters and a son, and such an RP-y thing seemed better suited to Virtue than the old server, Justice. (Plus Justice never seems active, maybe I have a rep there, or I play too early in the evening and it really is the Aussie server, whatever the reason, it's too quiet.) Four of the family were low-level or otherwise a good candidate for re-rollling anyway, but one of the daughters, a 24 Ice/Devices, was both well-chosen AND in posession of a pretty nice array of inf and badges, so I bought a transfer for her. 24's probably low-level to some, but to me that's several months worth, what with my terminal alt-ADD. I knew the name would be available, I have a tendency to pick funky names.

I have a few other characters I'd like to transfer to Virtue, but I'd have to buy more slots to accomodate them, an additional expense I can't particularly justify. Especially considering the inevitable wave of new characters that'll come with GR.

I wonder how the devs expected this to affect the servers, or if they considered it at all. Did they expect diffusion or consolidation of the actively played characters?

I've seen that and browsed it, but it's frankly a bit too tumbling like a multipaged run-on-sentence to be of much use to me. Were I rolling new alts, I might get much more use out of it. But at this point, my older characters are as much their names as they are their costumes and powers.

So as much as I hate to, I'll likely go with appended versions of their original names with a period or underscore or losing a space in some of the two word names. I've already been told quite curtly during one application "interview" with an SG that "we look down upon names with that sort of treatment, if you can't get an unadulterated version of the name go find a new one." Again, applied to new alts, I agree. But the remark came across as having zero sensitivity to what it might actually feel like to be considering such a move this late in one's history with a game. Felt like salt in the wound.

These characters are private five year legacies. A week ago, another player recounted being mugged then using CoH as an escape while cooling down from that crappy experience. In similar ways over the years, these characters in my game and in my head have been there when I needed them. I suppose I'm a bit like an author in the degree of connection I feel to them. And as I said, to me they are their names and their names are them. Compromising with an appended tail on the original name feels less heartbreaking than totally retconning the character into oblivion because the unadulterated version of the name is unavailable. This is of course my very personal take. And others' mileage may vary.

I'm sure this sounds all too emo to a few folks out there. But I'm just being honest with myself. And what I'm about to write may not be understood by everyone reading, but I'm sure a few out there get me here: Somewhere deep in me I'm kind of aware that if I botch how I handle this server jump, it will probably sever my deep sense of attachment to CoH that keeps me here.

I've known other folks, both in this game and others, who've reached states of being ready to leave game. To seal the deal, they'd delete their mains. Invariably, that seems to do the trick. I've no desire to inadvertently do the same to myself via a mass server transfer here. But I can't help but feel that risk. This game is old and my time with it has been long. There are other options out there and this may or may not be what pushes me to move on once and for all. Strange but true.

I was thinking in terms of asking for help there in coming up with a very similar but not identical name to one you have on another server. But if that doesn't work, oh well.

I don't have a lot of names like that, but as I said I really liked the name Serpentine Fire and decided to settle for a hyphen in the middle when I transferred her. And I have other characters that could not work with a different name, so I'd never transfer them. "Quantum Butterfly" a grav/storm troller, for example... the only reason that character exists is because of the name and concept behind it.

That's a good name.

And I hope I didn't sound too dismissive of your helpful suggestion. I can tell from the activity on the name thread that it's quite useful to others and I appreciate the suggestion.
