Forts and Crabs at Soloing
I solo just fine with my Fort.
Don't I know you???
Both my Crab and Fort do very well at soloing, though the Crab didn't really take off until the late 30s in that respect. Bosses drop quickly to both, though against the stronger melee-heavy ones the Crab has to kite a fair bit (the Fort just holds or confuses them). But yeah, for the most part they both tear through solo content with relative ease.
Forts make soloing very, very safe. Between two control powers(or 4, if you take them, but they aren't up very often) and huge amounts of Defense you're pretty much untouchable. The only issues I've ever had with mine were some End issues in the mid-20s, and of course EBs one-shotting me because they got lucky.
Fort's are pretty heavy on ST damage, so bosses shouldn't be a problem.
I can't say anything about a Crab, though. I haven't had the patience to get another SoA up to 24 yet.
Crabs are good at soloing, but it takes alot of inf to get a build together that could solo. My TanCrab can solo farm the wall in Cimerora and I solo'd an EB Captain Mako and an AV Back Alley, but he's not exactly good for soloing when compared to his teaming ability.
A Fort on the other hand is as Take_It_Easy said, very safe. Softcapped defense, solid single target DPS (Psy and Toxic damage being the least resisted damage types makes it that much tastier as well) and Mez capability and plenty of wiggle room in your build to choose what you'd want. Not to mention teams will appreciate the Defense buffs you can give as well as your overall effectiveness, especially against AVs. Crabs only have 1 thing over Forts, Serum. However, Aid Self can fill most of the hole serum fills, but Forts can make up for it fairly well with their Mez potential.
Keep in mind that leveling is going to be irritating at first, but once you hit around the mid 20's you'll start to feel how whichever class you chose will play.

I will make this brief since I am very tired.
I intend to try both and I want to know how do they solo. On paper they look quite strong . How do Forts and Crabs solo against mobs and bosses? Are they just minion melters or can they make short work of a boss? I once played a Spine/Regen scrapper to lvl 41 and I fount his single target damage too low and fights against bosses took too long. I do not want to deal with that again so please tell me when fighting bosses solo if the Fort and Crab will do better. Already know both ATs have the AOE covered , especially the Crab. This will be my first time on a VEAT. Thanks |
I don't know..if you think Spine Scrapper has "low" damage, then you may not be impressed by Fort's damage.
My Fort carries both Assault leaderships and has tons of set bonuses. Soloing for her is a joke because one of her heavy hitters is a mag 3 hold (Dominate). Fort has excellent defense and mez protection too.
Crab is not a very good soloer until later or if you build like a "tankish" Crab but then you may lose some dps.
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
I've soloed my Crab to 32 and it has been the quickest 32 levels I've ever done. Maybe it just fits my playstyle, I don't know.
I've soloed several EBs and sometimes it takes more than one try, although for the most part, if I fail on the first attempt all I need is to use the Loa Bone and a couple purples and I'm golden.
I can't say much about the Crab Spider, but I can definately say that Fortunatas are very safe at soloing.
Scramble Thoughts stuns most bosses in one go.
Dominate is a damaging attack as well as a hold.
Telekinetic Blast has a 60% chance for knockback and also does some smashing damage for when you're fighting robots/psychic resistant enemies.
Subdue deals good damage as well as having an 80% chance to immobilise the target.
And should you require it, confuse is available.
Psychic Wail also stuns, slows by 70% for 20 seconds and doesn't crash your endurance.
You have a solid attack chain, possibly with a bit more single-target damage than a spines scrapper has, good defense and resistance to psychic attacks and disables.
All of a fortunatas single-target attacks are ranged, so you can also take hover and eliminate enemy melee.

i used to solo lib tv with my fort on relentless set for 8. pvp build tho
@KoolVirus
I kill things fast enough on my crab that Softcap defense is more than enough to keep me alive. While the resists my crab has are fantastic, I almost never get hit to begin with either way. My Crab has better than shield defense survivability across the board and whatever does hit me generally gets healed back before I get hit again.

A Fort will be much easier soloing then a Crab until you invest a fair amount in IOs, Crab doesn't have a lot of tools till higher levels to deal with incoming damage except for outgoing damage. On the other hand, with dual builds make a Bane and solo with that, Bane is a great soloer, then switch to Crab for a team build.
A well IOed Crab is a popular addition to any team, not quite as much AoE as a blaster (assuming doing co-op content), but nice team buffs and debuffs and doesn't need much attention from support characters.
Nobody's mentioned the pets a Crab can use?
Once a Crab summons pets to use, the Crab becomes a monster. All the pets are protected a little with Maneuvers, and once you reach level 38, it becomes even more easier as the two Disruptors have access to a hold each, which combined can hold bosses.
Even before that, Crabs have Venom grenade to knock down resistance of Bosses, so they can take them out easier. If you put an Achilles Heel or two into your attacks, you can do even more debuffing to them.
Of course, don't take this as any superiority over other VEATs, I like 'em all! :3 Eventually, roll a Bane Spider, and a Night Widow too!

A Crab could be built for ST damage over AoE damage, and they might do reasonably well at it, but you'd be sacrificing the amazing AoE to do so.
The Fort can handle most content with good survivability, but I'd doubt the boss fights would be any quicker.
At first glance, a Night Widow might appear to be too similar to a spines scrapper for your interest, but I think you'll find that to be the best ST killer of the bunch.
(I can't speak for Banes though, not having played one.)
Forts are easy to IO relatively cheaply. Crabs can be decent additions to any team with even basic IOs, but you're breaking out a large chunk of inf to turn them into AV solo-ers.
Night Widows seem to have the greatest range, with basic IOs bringing them into lethal territory, but it easily taking 2 bill inf to hit the softcaps, perma-hasten and sort out the Endurance issues.
Crabsterminds are a very tough build to get right, but I pulled it off on my crab and he can solo x5 mobs.
I haven't finalized his build yet, but (depending on the villain group) my crab can regularly solo x8 mobs, and often up to +2 difficulty simultaneously. Not much of a reason to do so for me, personally, so I usually just leave him somewhere between x5 and x7.
