Suggestion: Costume Codes
I hate contests. Especially contests where lawyers dictate you can't compete. I would like to be able to get some custom costume pieces. Be it form Vet rewards, Special Holiday rewards or even micro payments.

While I would love a Praetorian code...this is a give-away, so it's perfectly equitable. I can sympathize with *WANT*, but it doesn't make the method of distribution unfair. How is missing out on a give-away unfair?
Thumbs up to having them in the store, though.

I can see where your coming from but /no
It was already confirmed that we're getting these pieces as Costume Parts with GR, which is why it is awkward to get the Costume Code. I can completely sympathise though.
Although, the cossie parts better not be unlockable!
I'm just wondering where the heck people are getting these amazing copy/paste scripts! Given that the serials are in images (often with funky colors) designed to throw off captcha-reading scripts, they must be some pretty advanced stuff!
Though probably not all THAT useful, since everyone I know who's gotten a code (myself included) did it legitimately by typing it in. And believe me when I say I'm not the fastest typer in the world!
The whole notion that people are using scripts just sounds like "No! I should have won! They must have cheated somehow!" to me.
It's not just a giveaway. It's a race, a giveaway with conditions (again, see contest). And I defy you to respond to one of these posts by hand faster than a script can. Fairness doesn't even enter into the equation.

It's entirely fair.
And what the heck are you talking about, re: scripts? You seriously think there is an auto "browse twitter/boards, cut picture, login to plaync account, paste text" program out there?

I as well like the idea of the costume codes being put up on the store.
So put me down on the list of people that wouldn't mind buying that which I haven't a prayer or winning in a contest... or getting unless there's an East Coast Hero Con, and a Mid-US HeroCon for those not on the East / West Costs, and an Australian Hero-Con, and a Europeon Hero-Con, and a... *insert country that plays CoH here*
Not sure if I like the idea of them being for sale, but SOME kind of non-contest way to get permanent costume powers is something I would support.

How about they randomly select an active account and apply the code...

Cannot agree with this. The Costume Codes are being given away in a fair manner, and if there is a script out there... I dont think so. I mean, they changed the Twitter giveaways so that one couldnt just run a 'cut&paste' type script, AND you have to apply it to an active account. It's not like some guy is sitting in Maine and grabbing all the codes or something. I am sure that the hardcore with plenty of downtime probably have grabbed a good number (if not all) of the codes through spending time on Twitter. Niv gives plenty of warning, and if I had time to stay home (and not work) I would get the headsup on my cellphone and go from there.
Either way, I wouldnt necessarily be against them putting them in the PlayNC store, but I can understand why they wouldnt. The people who spend a good deal of money to attend a Con (guaranteed code) or even follow the Tweets (a chance at a code) are putting in the extra effort. Watch the Boards for people going to a Con with the Wentworth's and see if they will buy a code or two for you... if you trust them. A little effort goes a long way.

Cannot agree with this. The Costume Codes are being given away in a fair manner |
What are the chances of an individual player having a shot at a costume code? 1 in 100,000? 1 in 300,000? 1 in 500,000?
Realistically, you have almost as good a chance to get struck by lightning as you do getting one of the costume codes if you don't go to a con.
The people who spend a good deal of money to attend a Con |
To everybody who can't attend the con, it's almost a punishment, a nah nah, look what I got and you couldn't get because I could afford a cross country trip and you couldn't.
Lets get realistic for a minute here. Precedent has already been set in game for the developers to make old exclusive stuff readily available to new users. The bad case in point is the City of Villains pre-order helmets, the 51 month vet reward. The good cases in point are the Good Vs. Evil Item pack and the Jetpack Mini-booster.
Now, I'm not against the people who are able to attend cons being able to have a lead time on costume parts. I do think that the devs and publisher need to look at solutions to make those costume parts available to players who simply can't go to cons, and have no desire to participate in lotteries they have no realistic chance of winning.
It's not a freaking punishment.
And if you think it is one, you need to reexamine your priorities in life.
NCSoft can give out the codes however they feel like. They're not brain dead to tuck it into a goodie bag. That's the point of an incentive. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing people say that cons are being held solely to spite people who can't afford it or can't take the time off. How do you live in life, walking down the street, and seeing people with better clothing or cars than you?
The pre-order helmets were an exclusive item, true. But they weren't a pay item, and it's up to NC to decide what they want to do with them. It doesn't automatically equate them to costume codes.
"Let's get realistic," you said. You also said this:
I do think that the devs and publisher need to look at solutions to make those costume parts available to players who simply can't go to cons, and have no desire to participate in lotteries they have no realistic chance of winning. |
Why exactly do you merit a costume code?

Horse puckey to that statement.

No effort. No participation. No interest.
Why exactly do you merit a costume code? |
It's within PS's rights to do whatever they want with costume codes, true, but it's also within our rights to not like it.
But you could take time off from school, and get a second job. It's none of my business, but I'm just making a blanket example. I could take time off of work and save up money over the year. It wouldn't be very hard. I just don't want to put the effort into it.
That's why I'm interested in seeing an East-coast con. I can put less work into it.
As an aside, as a UK native, did you attend any of the Brighton events?

Because there might be a difference of needed effort, participation and interest depending on what your circumstances are? Especially if one happens to live halfway across the globe?

And yeah, depending on people's situation, there are different financial/etc. obligations. But thems the breaks. If people live next door to the Con hall with a surplus of cash in their pockets, they won't have much trouble.
So what? Do people seriously expect Positron to visit every single subscriber with a goodie-bag, a preview of GR, and a hug? Have some personal accountability people. I've said I'd like to see more NCSoft events, and events outside of CA, but I'm not crying a river because I suffer emotional duress from not attending the con.

The issue here isn't that it's literally impossible to get the costume codes {albeit for many, it is}, but that it's inequitable. The necessary investment to receive, or even have a shot at the costume code varies massively between players based purely on circumstance and favors a very small percentage of players in {contextually} fortunate locations.

If you're saying that NCSoft shouldn't give them away at the con, then you are entitled to your own opinion. Similarly, if you want one for your account, you are equally entitled to your own opinion.
Getting costume codes isn't impossible. And the suggestion that it is for "many" is, I think, a gross exaggeration. The fact that NCSoft is just giving them away for free is a testament to that fact. Anyone can get one, if you put effort into it. This whole thread smells of an entitlement rant (I did NOT put that tag down there). I have yet to see any legitimate argument that giving free stuff away because the Dev's are nice is a problem.
For the record, I don't have one. I'm not interested in putting the effort into it.

I support having them in the store. I said so at the beginning. I'd love to see further income for game development.

Again, you're misinterpreting my argument. I'm not asking for a code for free, nor am I arguing that, if I can't have one, nobody should. What I am arguing for is that I believe a system where all players have an equal or at least reasonably similar opportunities to receive the codes {or for that matter, any perk, especially purely cosmetic ones} is superior to one awarded to a handful of lucky ones. If it's a mutually profitable one, then so much the better, wouldn't you agree?
The short-short version: PUT THEM UP ON THE NCSOFT STORE PLEASE!
Quote:
Main Entry: race
The not-so-short version: I know the devs want to keep the costumes rare. That's great, fine, wonderful, and very okay. However the means for distributing the costume codes is *BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEP!* awful!
Great, IF someone happens to have all day to wait for twitter/board updates, AND happens to get in ahead of someone's copy/paste script, they might get one. And YES, it IS a contest. It's a race. Look up the synonyms for race in the thesaurus.
Part of Speech: verb
Definition: run, speed in competition
Synonyms: boil, bolt, bustle, career, chase, compete, contest, course, dart, dash, fling, fly, gallop, haste, hasten, hie, hurry, hustle, lash, outstrip, plunge ahead, post, pursue, rush, scamper, scramble, scud, scuttle, shoot, skim, sprint, spurt, swoop, tear, whisk, wing
Or, once a year, they can go to HeroCon and get one as part of their swag.
Or, once a year, they can go to HeroCon and buy them there for $20 while the rest of us get told to *BLEEP* off because we aren't "hardcore" enough to trek 2-3000 miles for a convention held during the active school year.
$20 for a costume is no big deal. Some will, some won't. The multi-thousand mile trek, however, IS. Especially to people with families who can't simply pick up
Yes, there's always going to be haves and have-nots. At least with most of the other specialty content in the game, the distribution methods are equitable.
Vet Awards: Play long enough and you get them.
Holiday Badges: Play during the time and get them. Purchase older ones.
Boosters: Buy it when you have spare cash.
The specialty costume distribution isn't equitable in any way, shape or form.
Were Paragon at more than one self-run con (and the odd ComiCon), limited to driving distance from their offices, a year I probably wouldn't be so annoyed with the situation.
C'mon guys. Smack the marketing guys up and get this fixed please?
I'm not saying this stuff has to be put up the second it's made available to convention goers. But, after 6-12 months, plunk them down on the NCSoft website for purchase. This way the people who actually WERE hardcore enough to make it to these events have a nice long time to enjoy their swag for being there.
