I love it when my pets are smart.
I am often suprised at how good phantasm is. Time after time I've been saved by the decoy phantasm in between PA recharges. All around I really like what Illusion brings in the form of pets. Spectral terror and Phantasm really shine when I dont expect it. I've had decoy phantasm even save me from ambushes I didnt even know about. Times where im just gabbing away talking to friends and would have face planted were averted by Phatasm's obviously superior (to mine) skills.
Stories like this make me want to trade my plant troller for an illusionist. Ol' Audrey II seems to love to start fights then come running back with friends in tow

I have just passed 34 with my Illusion Controller, and Phantasm seems to be a great pet. I do enjoy the Decoy, too.
And since Power Customization came along, it is fun when there are multiple groups of multi-colored Decoys out in the fray.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Haha I seriously was looking for someone talking about how Awesome Singularity is...the bad part most people never get to experience how awesome he is due to Grav being tough for most to play .
I've been pretty impressed with the decoy phantasm too. When I was soloing Maria Jenkin's arc, I was having some issues with PA dropping and the EB/AV going after me...but the decoy did a great job holding him back and saved me a few times. As much as I love my blasters and scrappers, illusion controllers and their pets can be life savers.

After hearing all the good things about phantasm, I think I may need to play my lowbie illusion controller more.
Singy is awesome! It's a shame most people I've teamed with think its useless because it "just floats around".
My Jack Frost had a really dumb moment last night. I was teaming with people in the SG I'm a member of in RWZ and we were waiting for everyone to be around before going onto the next mob when Frosty just ran right past us and into melee combat with a huge mob of Rikti. He didn't last long.
Pets can be infuriating when they draw unwanted aggro or go after the minion while an AV is smashing their face in, but it's so nice when they act like they're actually smart.
I was just doing the Escalation arc solo, with my difficulty set for 6 players (which is how I usually roll with my illusion controller). I turn a corner and there's a huge amount of enemies, but as usual I shrug and drop Phantom Army in there. I jump in the middle of the action... and promptly get stunned. No break frees. Oops. So I'm trying to get away from the heat of the battle while my HP drops bit by bit, and I leave my stunned state a few seconds before the first Decoy from Phantom Army starts to fade with. With a ton of enemies still around, I run like heck, heading for the elevator but stopping before going down. Hitting a few inspirations to get back to almost full health, I wait for the inevitable huge ambush to come, and... my Phantasm appears, followed by one guy. Uh, that's odd. I beat him up and go back to the battle location... where the Decoy Phantasm is holding about 10 enemies so they don't go after me and the real Phantasm. I just had to giggle at that. Way to go, Phantasm! He saw things get bad, casted his own Decoy, and ran like heck. I think that after four years, he's starting to get the hang of things. |

There are a few reasons that I feel that Phantasm is arguably the best controller pet. Not the most damaging, but he really complements the primary in many ways.
- Phantasm has his decoy, as discussed in this thread, that is invulnerable. He can tank an AV with the Decoy, just like you can tank an AV with Phantom Army. the Decoy does Illusory Damage that fades after a short time, but you can take advantage of that damage if you kill off the target before it fades.
- Phantasm does Smashing and Energy Damage. The rest of your set does Psi damage. So when you run into foes who are highly Psi resistant, you still have a way to defeat them. The other pets generally do the same kind of damage that the primary does.
- Phantasm flies, usually behind you. He is mostly well behaved and doesn't aggro groups that are a distance away. He is also good at intercepting ambushes behind you. Because he flies, you don't have nearly as many problems of him getting lost or left behind.
- Phantasm's knockback is a mixed blessing, but I find it is more often a benefit than a problem . . . once you learn how to deal with it. Phanty acts as a bodyguard, knocking back foes who get near to you. Phanty's knockback has saved my tail many times. The trick to making knockback work for you and not be a problem is to not get too near to the melee fighters -- you have ranged attacks, so use them. Of course, if your secondary is Kinetics, that can be a bit of a problem.
- Illusion has no AoE damage attacks . . . but Phanty has a cone attack. Granted, you have no control over when he uses it, but he is pretty reliable. Just position yourself near a group, and Phanty will blast them with his torrent. I think Twoey (Audrey II or Venus Fly Trap) has a "fling thorns" cone attack, but the other pets only have single target attacks. (Granted, Imps can do 3 at once.)

Phantasm is Awesome but he's not my Fav...I would say for me I think the top 5 are....
1.Singy
2.Phan
3.Animate Stone/Lava Man
4.Audrey/Fly Trap
5.Imps
6.Jack Frost
Jack is at the bottom of the list for me b/c even though he can grab a lot of aggro he tends to die pretty fast on most occasions. Jack deals nice Damage but you have to keep and eye on him...with the top three pets you can pretty much sit back and let them do the work...Especially Animate Stone.
Ever since they gave Fly Trap a little lovin' he's been awesome...I knew he was something special when he took an alpha for me and LIVED...and it was Renegades to boot!
Phantasm is also cool b/c he stick around when you die...or at least the decoy does...I can't remember it's been a while. Many times thanks to him duking it out when I was dead gave me plenty of time to rez and retreat or use my APP rez power.
I am really looking forward to this new controller set that's will be coming out.

My entirely subjective listing, in part guided by my fondness for the controller set, is:
1. Phantasm
2. Animate Stone/Rocky
3. Fire Imps
4. Singularity
5. Jack Frost
6. Twoey
I don't dislike any of them, but the Imps rate high with me because they make such a huge difference in the character. Singy, too, but Singy's lack of damage knocks him down a slot. But while Twoey has been improved a great deal, I find I sometimes forget to cast it, and it doesn't make a huge difference in the character's effectiveness (except solo).
I would rank Plant Control above Grav and Ice, but not the pet.

I've always liked the concept of Gravity, and I can never make myself level one.
Give me controller /traps, and I'll roll one in an instant though. Wormhole + traps sounds absoltely unbalanced in how sadistically fun it would be, I'd love to wormhole a spawn into a trip mine field.

So my coalition ran a three 'troller team on a light teaming night. We had an illusion/kin, plant/kin & my fire/kin...
EPIC confusion and fun with my pets causing the most problems... bitey, stabby and grabby definitely got squished like grape on more than one occasion. (when do we get to name OUR pets???)
Even before I got my first 'troller to 50, I really loved running with illusion & plant trollers more so than the others... Fire imps always seemed to mess up my tank's aggro management by bringing down more mobs. Much more pain than KB from any illusion pet caused.

As a minor personal campaign, I'm trying to get folks to recognize that Fly Trap's nickname of "Audrey" is not really correct. In Little Shop of Horrors, the plant was actually named "Audrey II," and Seymore called it "Twoey." So, the correct nickname should be "Twoey" or "Audrey II." You can see it in the clip linked above.

I admit though with Jack I bet if I made a Ice/Cold controller he would be astounding...up there with the awesomeness of Stoney.
I think I rated Siny so high b/c much like Phan he has kept me alive. Dmg is awesome and it really helps but seriously many times before if I am fighting a full spawn of melee baddies and I start to Quickly loose life Singy has no qualms of coming to my aid to repel them all. While keeping 2 or three of them held and taunting the rest why I get my barrings and fulcrum+Fireball them all to oblivion.
I've never had the three monkeys of doom but i have teamed with more fire doms/controllers than you can shake a stick at and 65% of the time they die or the team dies from one of them soloing a mob or going rogue.
I do have to say Local Man the pet that AMAZED me hands down was Animate Stone...since I leveled my controller after the fix I was able to see Animate Stone in his full tanking glory...it was marvelous...I can't Imagine having more than one of him...man I wish I played COH during the more than one pet summon days!
Also for you fellow coh people out there who have a hard time with Grav/ I would suggest trying a Grav/Kin, Grav/Cold, Grav/Storm, Grav/TA, Grav/Rad
I have seen a Grav/Storm in action and I was impressed. Grav/TA to me seems nothing but win and Grav/Rad is just down right awesome!
