Role Play = Pizza?
Someday, I'm gonna stop at the Adrian's on Perry Highway and try a pierogie pizza.
I favour the Thin 'n Crispy crust.
Not as much thick so you don't get filled up on dough.
And of course the topping has a bigger impact.
Not too certain how that applies to roleplay, but you pizza metaphor seems to hold up to casual scrutiny.

I thought Sicilian style was where the crust was raised up and baked in a square pan (which is AWESOME, by the way). Chicago-style is the style where the sauce goes over the cheese and toppings. Also, sun-dried tomatoes.

Sauce over cheese pizza is either a Trenton Tomato Pie or Detroit Style

No one has ever lost friends or gotten into fights merely because they couldn't agree on toppings.

Both craved pizza very badly. Her girlfriend wanted pepperoni and sausage on the pizza. My best friend is Jewish and wouldn't have meat and dairy mixed in a food. They could only afford one pizza, and neither would budge. When my friend realized that her girlfriend considered "Pepperoni tastes good" a good rebuttal to "You're offending me on a religious level", they broke up.
We've all reconciled and are good friends since, but the story gets told again and again for the lulz.

What do you call the role player who snobs all RP in MMOs, but holds up Oblivion and Dragon Age as pinnacles of the hobby?
People who only like pizza, only when they are alone by themselves? People too afraid to eat pizza in public because they always get sauce on their chin?
Alpha Squad is just a simple cheese pizza: cheap, fast and with extra cheese. Some of us sprinkle a little chili pepper onto it, and serve it with an icy coke.

I like my Pizza the same way I like my RP.

A friend of mine in the Army got tired of people bumming slices of pizza from him, so he started getting some weird combo... anchovy, tuna and squid, or something. It worked; everybody stopped asking him for a slice of his pizza.
This was out in Germany a couple decades ago... not only did we have to ask the local pizza shop each time to cut the pizza into slices, but when we ordered Hawaiian pizza, we had to tell them put the pineapple on BEFORE cooking the pizza.
One wonders what sort of RP these anecdotes would relate to.

You pay to play. Having fun is ok. Kill Skuls or kill Crey. Hunt at night or in the day. Black or white or shades of grey. Play it your way. We have no say.
Silas' official theme song: Word Up!
One of my mutant abilities is to inhale pizza, at a rate so alarming it practically defies physics.
This is really useful, back in the days I had room mates. It meant you'd always get that extra third slice, when three people shared a pizza and there were only eight slices. It's a skill most college students have had to master at one point or another.
Nice thing about 12 packs, the factors of 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all covered. 3 people ordering a pizza however, is inevitably a race...and I will...*always* win that race.
The way I see it, Role Playing is a lot like Pizza.
Everyone loves good pizza, but not everyone enjoys the same toppings. Some people like their pizza simple, like a good pepperoni or cheese pizza. Some go hog wild with the toppings, putting everything and anything they can think of on it. Or, others will go into specialty pizzas, like a Hawaiian, Chicago Deep Dish, or Sicilian style, where the sauce goes over the cheese. And yet others will have nothing but exotic toppings, like goat's cheese, avocado, or even mayonnaise. But there's one thing that holds true about pizza. No one has ever lost friends or gotten into fights merely because they couldn't agree on toppings. Just food for thought. |
Funny thing. I just came back to CoH aftera few months checking out champions online. yeah I know I was weak and thought maybe cryptic actually wouldnt frell us over again. Silly me for thinking companies actually want to make a long lasting and successful game. I think those days might be in the past.
Anyways I actually dont have alot of complaints about CO except one. With no specific servers, and the population scattered across the shards RP is pretty much a lost cause. Especially random lore driven RP like I enjoy.
In CoH I find the most common flavors of RP are complete non lore based stuff mostly from new players who just make up whatever pops into their head. Nothing really wrong with that but it tends to give me the desire to say um wtf are you talking about.
The next is the SG based RPer. These are the kind that stick largely to SG rp creating complex stories that have no bearing on the general world nor much to do with it. These will often show up in TF in groups of 3 or 4, and if running the TF will be especially bad. It will fill team chat with endless babble and inane conversation about things taht can often be offensive enough to some to end up on my ignore list.
The final flavor is the one I fit into and get along with best. These are Lore based characters, flexible and ready to adapt to new information be it from a new issue or a player able to offer insight on a topic. These are not at all forced into specific boxes and often like me take what is and spin it into new directions while keeping the basics the same.
For example I have long owned a private sg base named for Crey and my and my bros alts are all members and have built up a nice little lair. We spin crey as not evil but morally neutral. Thier goal is very much to protect earth and humanity. We rp those that yo fight as not even rogue crey operatives but infact longbow black ops performing questionable actions and using crey gear and uniforms as a way to frame crey while hiding thier own misdeeds. Even created a AE mission that isnt to long or hard but very much gives evidence to this conspiracy.
By drawing from lore you can be as much a part of the world as statesman or a npc walking down the street. If all your RP draws from and has direct connection with game plots then when you discuss new players might actually assume what your talking about is indeed game fact. Older players will likely know something about what your speaking of and be able to join in without even being to much of an rper or even be OOC and still add to the coversation without it being to obvious.
Examples: GI Joe and Barbie Doll are joining a TF. They are part of the 80s toys rpsg. They fill the chat with banter about thier SGs latest rp event which had to do with several other SG members love triangle, and the fact one was a clone of another from a alternate timeline. Sure it probably is really interesting. To those who took part in it and know the other SG members. But to the 6 other guys in the TF its worthy of being put on ignore for and soon you relize your on a tf and cant actually talk to anyone else.
Now Demetrios my favored RP main goes into the club and while i am checking bios sees one mention being a former crey employee and does a good job over all. I go up and use the Didnt you use to work in a lab down the hall from mine intro. We get into chatting and soon are in a heated debate over the merits and morals of cloning and artifcial life forms. Since I am one myself IC and infact endorse Creys operation I speak of it froma purely hypothetical but potentially world saving science. She speaks of how she was a scape goat of a labs illegal research and crey hung her out to dry and left for dead in creys folly when things went bad. She makes use of the fact crey is always scott free of wrong doing. how her hero identity is so she can function without persecution as her real name brings with it.
We spend alot of time discussing our own stories but each is as familiar as it is unique and easy to follow and interact with. When we leave maybe she wonders if maybe crey wasnt the one who left her for dead but longbow ops who played her the whole time, and if a clone can be more human then the one he is cloned from.
Random long lasting indepth RP between to strangers that have alot in common because we use lore to its fullest. Ive even met one toon that was practically the eve to my adam in build and background connected to crey and the paragon protector creation. Its strange yet when you meet someone with a background as well formed as your own and a build as nearly perfect its a pretty cool feeling worthy of something out of a comic like when cable first met X man.
