To my fellow Veterans, I thank you and celebrate your sacrifice. Be it time, separation, or ultimate: Thank you.

Sometimes, I impress my boss. Sometimes, I impress myself. The rest of the time, I scare people. I can live with that.

Likewise, thank you to all our past, present and future soldiers.

I hadn't made this public, had just told a few friends on here. But I'm reenlisting back into Active duty Army. I'll be leaving for Ft. Bliss no later than January. I'll be going back into Infantry so the chances of ending up BACK in Afghanistan are very high.

Obviously around that time I'll be taking a break from here. I don't have to do basic all over again, but I have to do this simple 4 week refresher course in El Paso (Ft. Bliss), then back to Ft. Benning, GA for an Airborne refresher. From there I'm not sure which unit I'll be put into. The Army kinda treats prior-army like red-headed step-children, so I most likely won't get a choice as to which duty station I'd prefer.

Any who, there's still a good amount of time before I'll leave. So I'll have time to prepare and talk to people before I go. This was mainly just a heads-up.

On a side-note, I completely despise and am sickened that most people don't get off for Veteran's Day. For example, MLK Day is nationally celebrated and we get off. I'm not downplaying the man or his accomplishments, but why in the hell should we get off work for the actions of ONE man and not all our past and present soldiers who have/are fighting for our freedom? <end rant>

I'll promise to go easier on drinking and to get to bed earlier, but not for you, fifty thousand dollars, or two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars will I give up women. They're too much fun! - Babe Ruth

Because the soldiers who have and are fighting for our freedoms don't get to take days off. They're too busy doing their jobs to keep us safe and free.

To all who have served and are still serving, thank you.

It's a holiday here, Arion. Rememberance Day in Canada.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Actually yes....they DO get days off. And most will get Veteran's Day off...even some that are in Iraq and Afghanistan

A co-worker of mine is a veteran. I paid for his lunch today. When we sat down to eat, in a silly toast of sorts I said:

"I may not always respect the war, but I will always respect the warrior."

He appreciated the sentiment.

Days off are a privilege, Arion, not a right. At any moment, for reasons both imperative and trivial, that liberty can be taken away at a second's notice in a soldier's life.

For those in Iraq and Afghanistan, it can be because some dip decided to take potshots at them.

For those of us at home, the reasons tend to be more mundane. I lost many hours of sleep due to people losing passwords, and other hours because some people just don't understand that a break in a line elsewhere means communication will not get through until it is fixed (in that particular instance, the break was in Germany, while I struggled to explain in California that everything was perfectly fine on our end). Sometimes, though, we feel the effects of those lost abroad as well. Both those Forward and in Garrison are crucial to the efforts of the Whole, and when one has an emergency, both must be ready to act instantly and with little hope for compensation for the personal time lost.

I always felt that such disappointment was a light sacrifice, compared to the blood spilled by my brothers in arms. When comparing grumblings to blood, blood always weighs more.

From my Reputation:

his point was that it should be a celebrated holiday like MLK day.
What I have quoted here, as you can see above, was Arion's ENTIRE post in this regard. His earlier post was comparing Veteran's Day to Martin Luther King Day. This one JUST focuses on the "days off" soldiers get. I felt this was in bad taste.

I'm well aware of how days off work, and in MY opinion our freedom isn't a right....it was gained through our men and women serving this country, and is something we have to remain vigilant to protect and, in my opinion, should be honored more than it is. Freedom is a fragile thing that can be taken away. We've already talked about this, Grey, and we look at it differently. You see freedom as a right, and I respect your view, but I disagree and don't see freedom as a right.

In regards to my post. We've already talked about this and decided that you thought I was disrespecting the military by implying they get too many days off. I, personally, don't see how what I said could have been misconstrued into that, especially since I had already confessed into going back into the military; however, to clarify, what I said was not meant in ANY way to disrespect the military. The military does get a decent amount of days off, but they earn them and, in my opinion, deserve more off.

Furthermore, my post was not focusing on the days off that soldiers get. I had posed the question: "why in the hell should we get off work for the actions of ONE man and not all our past and present soldiers who have/are fighting for our freedom?" Then Kyo responded with: "Because the soldiers who have and are fighting for our freedoms don't get to take days off" I was simply pointing out the fallacy in what she said. I was not in ANY way downplaying or disrespecting our military. I respect every branch.

Arion out!

Ok ok... everyone take a little timeout.

What were we talking about? Oh.. yes.. the men and women who have served our country, fought, and sometimes died in order to give us the freedom to enjoy our time off, and the luxury to sit around and argue about who can, does, and should get days off when and where.

Thank you veterans!

Thank you all and thank you to all the veterans. I personally hold Veteran's Day much higher than Memorial Day. Memorial Day (a commonly taken off holiday) is held in memory of all who have fallen in the line fo duty, while that is great to do, Veteran's Day (a commonly unthought of holiday) is held in memoory of all who served, died, lived, or injured. I think it should be held in much higher regard (like Canada does) due to the fact that the ones who have died have gotten their rest and release, the ones that were injured or fell ill soldiered on. Arion...good luck man and definitely shows your courage.

Thank you very much, BB. I completely agree. I wish the U.S. put half as much effort into Veteran's Day as Canada does into Rememberance Day.

My point of view in regards to Freedom being a Right is that numerous times, all throughout history and in three pivotal moments in our own nation's, we have fought to prove that it is. That all men and women are born free and that anybody who seeks to take liberty away from a person had best be prepared to reap the Hell they've sown.

Freedom isn't something you earn, it's something you're born with. You're born with the capability to make choices and decisions in life, to live it as you see fit. This nation, and many across the world that are regarded as "civilized," hold this to be one of their greatest virtues, that nobody can force you to do what they want you to do. If somebody takes that away from you, so long as what you were doing didn't hurt anybody else, that person is punished because they had no right to take your freedom away.

I wish I was as naive as you and believed that freedom isn't something you can earn, that you're born with. But we've obviously lived two different lives, and I've seen it to be otherwise. Americans, yes, we're born with that. Not everyone on this earth has the luxury of freedom, or even living their life as they see fit. Neither did the U.S.A. at one point. So tired of repeating myself to you.

Be a child and respond to get your 'last word', but know that it will go unread and unanswered by me.

SO, because I have a life and no longer wish to have a headache named, Grey.....PEACE OUT!

P.S. Practice your reading comprehension so you can better follow my posts from now on. K Thx Bai

I see what you're saying, and I disagree. Everything else I had to say I sent you in a PM.
