Oppessive Gloom = DEATH!

I finally finished getting my spines/dark scrapper to level 50 and used a respec to make sure he was slotted to farm.

Got all my enhancements slotted in for all the good IO set bonuses.

Set up my farm mission and go in... jump into the first mob, get their attention then run for the next. I get all the vills in melee range then my health bar goes down to nothin! I think... "that's wierd" let's try that again.

Repeat above another 3 times! lol

I couldn't figure it out then I thought about the health drain from oppressive gloom. Turned it off and sure enough.... I made it through every mob double stacked with NO deaths.

That power is dangerous when farming! lol

The self-damage is the main reason I switched to Cloak of Fear. Because yeah, if you're farming on IO'd out Dark Armor, I bet it's common to take more damage from Oppressive Gloom than you're preventing.

The second reason I went with Cloak of Fear is that I want my enemies to stand still, dammit! Not particularly applicable to Spines, of course.

I'll take a look at that. Thanks for the input.

What do you think about swapping combat jumping and oppressive gloom for maneuvers and assault?

Posted

Hm. I play a /dark brute quite often, and find that for the foes affected, the little ticks from oppressive gloom are better than the bigger ticks enemies give when they aren't stunned. But then again, I didn't go for defense in my IO's, just recovery.

Point taken about the wandering, though. (Note: I do have good luck with OG with the chance for immobilize+chance for -tohit purple. Those two can help performance.)

Brutes also have more HP than Scrappers, so they can take the damage better. Does Oppressive Gloom tick for the same amount on a Brute as a Scrapper?

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

No, the OG ticks are affected by damage scalars, but not by buffs (or debuffs)

This was tested on my Dark/SS Tank, who definitely takes less damage than a Dark Armor scrapper from them.

I think Scrapper damage from Oppressive Gloom vs. damage from minions is mostly a matter of how much other damage mitigation you have. I took both powers on my Katana/Dark while I was leveling to see which I preferred. And which I preferred varied. At a medium level, before I had my endurance under control, and before I had a lot of mitigation, Oppressive Gloom worked better for me. It definitely prevented more damage than it caused, and I could afford to give up a few hit points more than I could afford to give up a lot of endurance. But at a higher level, as everything else in the build was coming together, Cloak of Fear became the power of choice for me.

At this point, my defense is soft-capped to melee and about 40% to AoE and Ranged, and I'm farming +0x8 for drops to finish up my build. I've dropped Oppressive Gloom so I can't experiment, but I'm almost certain it would do a lot more damage to me than I would otherwise take from the minions it stunned.

What are you farming?

I have found a decent AE Arc that caps out tickets fairly quickly and just doing bronze rolls. not getting a ton of keepers but a good streak can net me 50 - 80 mil inf on the market.

Council Empire. I kind of got sick of wading through AE, plus I like purple drops. Mind you, I'm pretty sick of Council Empire at this point, so maybe an AE arc would be a nice change of pace. Whatcha got?

Looking up Council empire in wiki. I too like purples . only have one to my name.

you have a quick walk through for council empire?

Sending PM on the arc I like. I run it +2/8 with bosses. Funny thing, its full of council also.

I think I've had five drop so far on this character. That's in about a month of mostly playing, I'd guess. I'd probably get more than one per day if I was farming hard.

Well, it's an Unai Kemen mission on an alternate earth where the Council has taken over. You're theoretically there to close dimensional ruptures, but really, you're there for the large outdoor map filled with giant spawns of easily-dropped enemies. The inspiration drops are a constant "ding ding ding" like being in a casino.

Sorry for having drifted WAY off topic.

Hijack!

Does RWZ at level 50 missions have a chance to drop purples?

I thought slotted healths regen counter-acts OG's health drain.

Well, that depends on how many enemies are in range. Let say you have 10 enemies in range of Oppressive Gloom. I think it ticks for 6 hit points per enemy every 2 seconds? So that's 30 DPS you're taking from your own toggle. Health isn't close to enough to counteract that.

Taking it a step further, when my build is finished, I'll be soft-capped to all positions, plus let's say I'm averaging about 50% resistance. Compared to enemy damage, that 30 DPS is 60 DPS before my resistance, and 600 DPS before my defense. Figure half of those ten enemies are minions. That's 120 DPS for each minion I stunned. Believe me, those minions wouldn't have been doing 120 DPS.

Most Dark Armor builds have MUCH less defense than that, so the numbers are much smaller. So when fighting small groups with more average defense, Oppressive Gloom will indeed be a benefit. So that's where we get the rules of thumb like "Oppressive Gloom prevents much more damage than it causes" and "slotted Health will counteract the health drain from Oppressive Gloom." These are probably good rules of thumb, but they stop applying in edge cases like farming or extreme-defense builds.

Well... Just to make it easy for everyone to see what I'm planning this is the build I'm thinking about using. I have everything on here now except of course combat jumping in place of maneuvers and oppressive gloom in place of assault. Slotting of the powers is a lil different from what I'm running now but very close.

I prefer Oppressive gloom since the damage can be mitigated with greens and your heal.
Cack of Fear drains way too much end and has low base accuracy so i donĀ“t like it

Just thought I'd point out the foes level relative to you matters for how much damage OG does to its user. The damage from farming something 3 levels lower (such as lvl 47's) if Werner is recalling it correctly at 6 damage per tic is about double the damage you'll take from even level foes (and perhaps 3 times as much as vs lvl 52's). Startled the heck out of me when my Emp at level 50 jumped into a mob of low level Hellions in Atlas Park. The tics floating up off her from OG were coming in at 17 per Hellion.

Well, if it was that way, it isn't that way any more or differs by AT. My level 44 Spines/Dark takes 6.04 damage per tick regardless of enemy level. Just confirmed on level 2s, 23s, 39s, 40s, 44s, 45s and 49s.

Sounds like you're building another beast. Mind showing off your build, I'm interested to see what you came up with to cap ranged/aoe. But in regards to OG and CoF, that's pretty much how it went for me on my kat/da, leveling up I used OG, but on the top end I switched to CoF.

Sure. This one's more of a survivability beast and general-purpose build than my AV killers. DPS is pretty ho-hum at 146, or 162 with Death Shroud on, but it has passable AoE and a travel power to make it more practical for normal missioning. Endurance isn't sustainable with all 11 combat toggles running, but should be sustainable with either Cloak of Fear or Death Shroud off. I expect the main weakness to be defense debuffs.

ClawsandEffect made an inexpensive Katana/Dark build that still soft caps, so you don't have to spend six billion influence to get there.
