Hey all,

I have checked the last 10 pages for an IO'd build for an Invul / SS tank, and found nothin.

I want to know if anyone can spec a PVE build to accomplish best Def to all + all res powers... Basically use any IO's you can there is not a price limit, (avoid pvp tho) to create the toughest PvE tank possible.

Must have's...

1) Taunt.
2) Stamina

Thank you,

Not specific to Invuln/SS, but here was one found in the Tanker guides section:

I whipped up this build quite quickly, but it has everything I'd look for in a decent inv/SS build: near soft cap def with 1 enemy in range, +rech and +regen. Also with two leftover slots!

Soft capping an invlun to S/L and even Nrg/NNrg is pretty easy in all honesty. There's a great guide on the topic if you check the guide section.

I personally haven't gotten around to it yet. I'd have to respec and rework my Invlun/SS pretty extensively to do it. And in all honesty... the way he is NOW is pretty rock solid. I've yet to find a team he can't more addiqutily tank for. Oh sure, he's prolly not the tank you want for a MSTF. But a regular? I've done it a few times. It's not that big an issue.

But one day, i may get around to it. *shrug*

Thank you,
Check out the link provided by Aett. It leads to Call Me Awesome's guide on softcapping an Invuln tanker. You'll see multiple builds in there, including a couple of mine, which are actually designed to be softcapped down to L30.

It's not cheap. You're probably looking at several hundred million total to cap nowadays. But, with purpled toons going in the multiple BILLIONS, it's a much less expensive proposition.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I hate to jump on you for this when the rest of your post is topical and agrees with my experience, so I'll limit myself to observing that if you want to use the word "adequately" in a post (which I fully support!), there's probably a better way to do it. Maybe there are even guides on the subject.

Donna, the build you posted isn't bad, but it's got some specific problems.

No Rage?!? Unless you've got a really compelling reason to skip it, not getting Rage is a *very* bad idea. It will do far, far more for your survivability that ResEl, for example.

You may notice that the other builds posted didn't use full sets of Mako or Multi-Strike. That's because those sets have much better bonuses for positional than for typed def. You get better bonuses with fewer slots with sets like Kinetic Combat and Eradication.

Also, just four-slotting Kinetic Combat leaves your attacks low on Accuracy and Damage. At the very least, Haymaker needs another slot.

I don't see the point in frankenslotting Tough and Weave. Four-slotting them with any defense or resistance set should give you adequate amounts of defense/resist and end reduction, so pick a set by which bonuses you like. (I prefer Gift of the Ancients and Luck of the Gambler for defense, and Reactive Armor or Aegis for resistance.)

Here's the build you posted with some changes to power selection and slotting that I think improve it significantly:

Hey Finduilas, that's some nice tweaking thanks.

By the wat will I suffer from a lack of a heal ?
Otherwise this looks like the one that i'll go with...

Wanted super tankability for high level max difficulty
TF's etc, like lvl54 ITF's etc etc.

You have a heal in Dull Pain.

This.

DP is a huge heal plus HP boost; its only drawback is a long recharge timer.

However, with soft-capped defense it is unlikely that you'll need in very often. But it's invaluable on the rare occasions you run into pure Psi damage since you have no Psi res or def to speak of.

A soft-capped Invul is plenty tough enough to tank the ITF and other high-level TFs. The specific danger with the ITF is all the defense debuffs, so be sure to watch your combat monitor so you know if your def starts going into the red. But keep in mind that if an Invul tank is also capped for S/L resistance, he's got more to fall back on against defense debuffs than a pure defense tank like Ice or Shields.

Sounds great, I always play's my Invul auto'd DP and considered it max'd health.. Maybe with new found def I can use as a heal.

Thank you for all your help guys. <3

I don't have it written up, so I can't post it now, but I use a build that's a little reminiscent of Finduilas's build posted above, using sets like Reactive Armor, Kinetic Combat, Eradication, Mocking Beratement, and Aegis to get, with one foe in Invincibility, 50% S/L defense, 49.xx% E/N defense (allllmost 50%), and although F/C is under the soft cap, it hits the soft cap with 4-5 enemies in range.

I don't have Adrenalin Boost, though. (Placeholder for Physical Perfection, I assume?)

I also grabbed Char from the Fire Epic, threw a slot in, and threw in a pair of Basilisk's Gaze IOs for more E/N defense (cheap trick, I know). I did not use Zephyr. Also, I think the Kismet to-hit unique is a bit of overkill if you've got Rage and Invincibility boosting your to-hit, so I didn't use it.

The character also has Tough to cap S/L resistance.

Why my goal of 50% defense when 45% is the soft cap? I wanted to be able to endure some defense debuffs (with the aid of Invulnerability's significant def debuff resistance) and still be at the soft cap. I do a lot of Cimeroran content, and my defense even in the worst crowds only dips momentarily below the soft cap and then rises back above it; it's very, very solid.

The character has been hugely rugged for me. I recently did an ITF with two other Tankers and a Brute (possibly overkill, but I'll team with any weird combo). When the Dark Novas ambushed us at the oracle atop the hill, everyone else went down, and I stayed alive, surrounded by defense-debuffing Romans and negative-energy attacks. There were so many enemies that I was above the aggro cap, with some standing around idle, and when I defeated a combatant, an idle one would wake up and join in. The entire rest of the team backed away, recovered, came back to help, and was felled again.

My health did drop down to 1/3 or 1/4, and I did have to husband some green inspirations, popping them only when my life stayed low and didn't start to rise again, but more inspirations fell as I smashed through the melee, and I stayed alive. Dull Pain wore off, but recharged at a time when I was low again, so I hit it a second time and kept going. :P

The Brute sent me a tell: "HOW are you STILL ALIVE???" The Willpower Tanker was silent, and dead again.

I am not trying to brag just because I bought IOs; my point in posting this is to reassure you that a soft-capped Inv build (assuming it's solidly built without ignoring other things, like taking no attacks or something) is plenty tough for hard content.

I'd recommend three-slotting recharge IO's in the following powers.

Rage
Dull Pain
Hasten
Conserve Power

Rage will essentially be perma. You'll have nice windows of double-rage and (with speed boosters on your team, you'll even have times you're tripled).
DP will be up frequently (though most of the time you shouldn't need it)
Hasten won't be perma, but it'll be up so often that you shouldn't notice.
Conserve Power will not be perma, but will be up frequently enough to cover for times when your End bar is running low.

Just stick Hasten on auto and fuggetaboutit.

Also, consider replacing Hurl with Laser Beam Eyes. While overall damage is significantly lower, LBE has the following going for it:

  1. Lower End cost
  2. Lower Recharge time
  3. Lower cast time
  4. Has a -Def component (compared to the -Fly component on Hurl)
Here's a look at the build for my Def-capped at 30 build.
Note: There are no purples on there at the moment. KO Blow and FS are slotted for them (eventually), but right now they're both slotted with common IOs as such: 1x Acc, 3x Dam, 1x EndRed

Heh, Block of Ice works too, for anyone who'd prefer Ice attacks to Fire. On my Invul/EM, I have it slotted with 2 Basilisk's Gaze and 3 Thunderstrike, for a total of 5% E/NE. Very cheap trick, but hey, it works!

You're probably right about the Kismet +ToHit. I'm used to throwing it in for my non-SS Invul tanks, but it's not really necessary on a SS tank unless you're one of the "can't have enough accuracy" folks.

If your talking to me, i think i get it and you misunderstood my post. When i said "adequately" i wasn't talking about a softcapped Invlun, but MY invlun who isn't soft capped YET. I was saying, even without the softcap, he does an adequate job. I'm well aware a softcapped invlun is only riviled by granite tankers. I just think in most situations it's overkill. I'm still prolly going to do it, i'm just to busy playing other alts atm. lol

Actually, my guess is that Sailboat was responding to the OP's question about whether a soft-capped invul would be tough enough for high-level TFs.

I haven't yet found much that can seriously threaten a soft capped Invuln... even Lord Recluse is fairly easily manageable with a decent inspiration loadout and no support while your team kills the towers.

I do think that below the mid-30's soft capped defenses on an Invuln tanker are overkill... my exemplar build for CMA is designed for a target level of 25 and kicks out roughly 35% def to S/L and mid-20% in E/N... it's essentially unkillable on all the lower level TF's. That build tops out at level 32... above that I simply use my main level 50 build.

In the months since issue 13 I've faceplanted CMA exactly 3 times... all against Lord Recluse when the team was unable to overcome the bugged repairmen and kill the towers in 5 minutes. As a side note, has the STF been fixed or are the repairmen still getting their heals off before they become targetable? I've been away from the game for the last month or so and I'm not up on the latest changes.

Oh no, my long comment was indeed directed at the thread topic (for once!). And I agree with you that non-softcapped Invuln is pretty tough; mine has done well on low-level TFs without his set bonuses. It's a pretty good set.

Thanks for being a good sport about the grammar/spelling nitpick; can't help myself sometimes.

Ok I went with my build and Finduilas' tweaks, only thing I changed was the Kismet +6% Acc because 1 more Lotg gave you 9% anyway... :P

I tested it to start with on my Battle Maiden map, lvl 54's with bosses 8man spawn,.. stood in the middle without DP went AFK for dinner came back and was still on full health, full end about 20 mins later ! (popped back now n then so i didn't timeout)

Did cost alot tho, final build cost was about 1,300,000,000 but I bought all the procs and only needed to craft 4 rec's because the enchancements had run out.

Happy days!

Tonight i'm going to test her against some AV's and GM's ... w/e I can find.
