MY weekend "lol at ppl" thread!

Not mentioning any names or anything, but my question is this . . . .

How come some GREAT public channels created by players have become overrun with far too many mods who are power hungry and contributing more to a negative atmosphere than to the channels original purpose?

Seriously, some channels have like tripple the ammount of mods they actually need and even then some of those mods are far far far FAR too strict on rules!

Rules should be obeyed yes but come onnnnnnn, there should be a maximum of three mods per channel imo! Even the mods are constantly unblocking/blocking people because they have different viewpoints!

You know the thing about no one who wants power should ever be allowed to have it? Power corrupts; becoming a mod turns you into a dictator?

Whatever, when they first created the GGOOC channel, I refused to be a mod on it. It's a horrible job no one should want. People who are good at it are generally hounded out by idiots, leaving the people doing it because it gives them a feeling of personal power. Generally, we get the moderators we deserve.

As a player on other servers, some channels have everyone at Mod status and those channels are the most well behaved.

Lol, Damz, I have absolutely no idea what channel or mods you are talking about. At all. Honest!

(it is getting a bit flippin' stupid isn't it. that said, some people do ask for it)

How long do you need to be a mod for the "power tripper" badge?

Oh, well, concidering the amount of moaning I've been doing for YEARS on defiantbadgers and defiant events, I'd say those good, honest, cute mods do a great job not blowing a fuse.

That said, I also quietly left all the onion channels I used to be on a few years ago, not because of the mods, but the... other... people. (Not pointing a big funger att all onionites here, so don't go start a flame about it)

What in all hecks name is a big funger and does it taste good with melted mozzarella?

As a mod of defiantbadgers all I have to say is I cry a lot*. And those are the burning tears of rage and despair. The ones that sometimes make me wish for shotgun and a high bell tower. But I digress.

You don't need to kick. You can deOp without kicking the player from the channel. Which reminds me of the great debacle in Defiantbadgers...

Oooh, remember that one. Rather happy you're still standing strong, but the channel's sort of dead apart from the odd times I log on and get people started!

Also glad your sig reminded me I've probably got a "huge" amount of MA rewards waiting for me. (wonder if anyone's bothering with MA anymore... sigh...)

Do you people rememer when people actually used the coalition chat?
Nowadays it's DefiantEvents, or noone will hear ya! (Oh, well, there's the Arena channel. he he! The Help channel is somewhat fun as well...)

Help channel? Since it was changed to /hc I don't see anyone using it any more... or maybe I just have a lot of spammers on ignore? And yes, Defiant Events is now a melting pot of an amalgamation of a smorgasbord of stuff that is barely related by the odd event announcement that actually appears from time to time.

Seems like a lot of names kicking about here.

I had every sympathy with the mod on that channel.

It was very harsh but it did stop the channel degenerating into the unreadable mess of spam I have seen it fall into on a weekend.

I have seen such reasonable off topic exchanges used as a "its so unfair" "inconsistent mod" excuse to clog things up with yet more drivel.

Its nicer and more relaxed when everyone shows a bit of consideration but unfortunately once someone starts the silly buggers I'd rather it went all Stalinist for a bit.

Just offering my observations of "a channel"

I've never seen this mod in question, let alone in action, but to be fair Onion does have an active Onion Chat channel for non badge related discussions.

there's also a bit of inconsistency regarding language there too. (swearing)
which I don't even get, since anyone who might be offended by folks using bad words shouldn't have took the filter off in the first place.

I think you expect too much of the human race as a whole, and children/teenagers in particular craggy... people will have their cake AND eat it too, dontcha know?
