New Patch today I can't get onto CoH

The game will not apply and I get the error of "failed to rename C:/program files/city of heroes/cityofheroes.exe to C:/program files/city of heroes/cityofheroes.old"


Anyone want to tell me what is up with that?? I can't get into the game. I WOULD like to complain to that the website is FAR out of date. ever since this was switched to these crappy new forums they just don't update the website when they put a new download on there for "patch updates" It would be nice if they did that. Sure would help a girl out when she is trying to figure out whats going on and WHY there is a new patch out for some reason.

...and as usual still no patch notes on the website either.
This is getting VERY annoying!

yep there has been like 3 patches since they last updated it.

I have for some reason been able to successfully download it to my test server but I can't seem to still get it to work on live server.

I am still getting that weird error. I deleted the patch and a few things so hoping that now with the updated it might be ok.. *keeping some fingers crossed* Are you having the same issues?

Just a couple of quick ideas:

- Is your hard drive full?
- Is the folder marked as read only? Can you try creating a text file and saving it in that folder? Try copying cityofheroes.exe manually to see what happens.
- Maybe there's a lock on the file or folder, try rebooting.

Posting patch notes with a patch must be really hard. Really, really hard. Five years and they still haven't got it yet.

I jusst helped a friend with this same problem im at work on a laptop btw ..

Mine downloaded and applied it fine his didnt, hes home .. his goes into a fixing files loop we have seen this before and now realise it can be a bug, "can" be not always..

Funny now my laptops doing it since i cancelled and didnt hit next earlier..

Anyways.. heres what we do to get around this, and i hope the devs fix this soon its been happening to one of us every patch.

Reset internet connection, preferbly just rebooting modem (power off then back on after 10sec wait)

this usually fixes mine. but my friend need to reboot pc after also.

simple enough but still a pain in the butttt

Alot of the time when I receive that message of "cannot rename..." It is because of one of two reasons.

1. there is another instance of the client running (check task manager and if so end process)
2. you are running vista and the client does not have admin privileges. Right click shortcut and run as administrator.

My hard drive is not full at all. I still have about 200 gigs of space. the folder is not a read only and for some reason it won't let me copy it. Says that my exe is in use but City of heroes is not running.

Rebooted the computer but still getting the same error. HOPING that internet reboot will fix it. I'll keep it posted and thanks all for the help.

Worst case maybe I'll just reinstall the game.... SO don't want to do that

And you're running Vista? It could be a permissions issue. Try logging in as administrator or as the poster above suggested, try running the program as administrator.

actually i found the patch notes rather easily.....check this out...and you may ask how? I clicked the link at the top of the updater page that says Patch Updates. Granted the updates are not always listed still its worth a try.
