The Talents of PowerStream Jr.

Okay so I mentioned posting a pic of my son's drawings. This is a piece he did and then asked me to color it. Don't laugh at either please. I just did flats on it and didn't really clean anything up.
Well after I took this pic:

He went back and added some more ninjas so I guess this could be a WIP.... He also said he'd love to have claws like this in game.
edit - Okay I don't know why it's sideways but it corrects itself when you click the thumbnail.

Here's my bad color job on his great art! lol

Pretty damned good for 11! and the flats look fine nice job on both fronts. you should both keep practising!

He's got a fairly good sense of anatomy. The hands in particular are pretty well done, and hands are some of the most difficult things to draw.

Good for him! Make sure he keeps it up!

Well I thought according to Liefeld that FEET were the hardest thing to draw! LOL Well that and apparently Captain America.

Anyway thanks everyone your comments have really made his day!

Can I take a crack at inking and coloring him? I need something to motivate me...

Hope you don't mind, I didn't wait... gonna color him later... gotta run and make dinner for 3 hungry kids (20 somethings)...

Okay you have to show me how you did those lines....

Jr. is freaking out right now at just the lines and says "yes they can color him a million times over"!!! I showed him your DA page and he is psyched! lol

I need to get a pic of the updated image with his additions too.

Hope it was worth the wait, trying a new quick style of cell shading. I'd color it my normal way, but no time tonight. May try again later... though I gotta say I have been in a major slump for weeks, and your kid's drawing has been the most satisfying thing I've done in ages! Tell him thanks!

Love the inks and color on Jrs pencils bobby, really great color choices!

LJ those are so awesome! He doesn't even have words right now. He did the little girl squeel LOL. That is truly amazing stuff! And I now have to do a combo pic for my desktop of his, mine and yours!

Posted

LOL that made my day...

Another version, in one of my current styles... this only took a few minutes cause I had all the layers set.

Let me know if he likes it...

Nice coloring LJ and your kid can draw better than me too, although that does not take much...

Just saw this - Powerstream - nuture the talent! He is quite good for 11!

Wonderful job on that LJ - both versions! I can imagine how his eyes lit up when he saw that! Two big thumbs up!

I absolutely am encouraging him. I drew a ton when I was a kid. I even helped do backgrounds for the school plays. But I got interested in cars and girls and unfortunately the talent has left me.

He has a great imagination and some pretty natural talent. I make sure he knows how much we think about his work. It helps that he's also smart and doesn't get in trouble much. I lucked out and have a great kid!

Cool. He's got decent lines.

Okay I have finally gotten around to getting his revised image scanned.
This is the Scanned Image:

This is my attempt at lines:

What else can I do to clear these lines up? As of right now I'm still using a mouse and just using the magic wand. I know I should be doing something different but this is easy and fast so far.... But I have a ton to learn.

1) image > mode > grayscale
2) image > mode > RGB
3) image > adjustments > levels
4) slide white arrow in levels to the left
5) slide black arrow in levels to the right
6) slide grey arrow in levels towards the white arrow

4, 5, 6 takes tweaking... you don't want a dark dark black this way, just almost black.

7) using lasso tool, zoom in and select "spots" when you have all the spots large and small, odd shaped areas and corners etc, press Command + X, this will fill erase everything you've lassoed.

8) unlock layer, drag file into new file icon in the layers panel, near the trash can. this will duplicate what you have, set that to multiply and play with the opacity slider to make that black you want. This creates a softer black as suppose to the jagged edge black you would make by sliding the black arrow too far in Levels.

9) Flatten layers, save.

I lassoed a lot here to make it look uniform, you can see things I changed by the sword guard on the right figure, and by the neck on the left figure. Also this method makes a softer image closer to the pencil, check out the eyes, they're not black sockets like your version.

Tell me that took you the whole 42 minutes to do!?!?! LOL

Thanks LJ that gives me something to work on for sure! Have I mentioned how much he loved your colors? He wants us to print them and frame them.

HA! thanks, I am honored he likes them... and no, it took about 5 minutes, but I was lassoing like crazy.
