Oh the lag, the stupid lag!

Since i16 has been in effect, the lagg has been horrible. I know that its because of all the color changing and CoH has come back to life. But I hate the lag, the stupid lag. Has anybody else had a problem with the lag since i16?
Which I do enjoy the newest part of the game. I love that more peeps are on. I love it, but the lag, the stupid lag.

Haven't noticed any particular issue, except in the usual places where people always like to congregate in stupidly large numbers and stand there spamming PBAoE powers for no purpose.

What are the results when you turn on...?

/netgraph 1
/showfps 1

You can use the number 0 to turn these off. What is your Frames per second? Is your netgraph small and green?

I've experienced no lag in I16.

The term "lag" is so general as to be almost completely meaningless. I and many other players have no problems with "lag." Instead of simply complaining about "lag" you should analyze the type of performance problems you have and take steps to remedy them.

Have you tried adjusting the graphics options downward? Turned off getting status information about other players? Have you rebooted Windows recently?

Are you experiencing low frame rates? If so, you should consider upgrading your graphics card, or updating to the newest graphics driver.

How much RAM does your computer have? A couple of gigabytes are really required for smooth operation. Similarly, what's your CPU clock speed? A 2GHz dual core is almost a minimum requirement.

Do you have a slow Internet connection (dialup, perhaps)? If so, you should consider upgrading to cable modem or DSL, or possibly mobile broadband if you don't have hard-wired connections in your area. The game seems to be constantly transmitting 5K of data pretty much any time you're teamed now, and if you're in a crowded area it will spike much higher. A Rikti invasion will easily send a constant stream of more than 10-20K.

Are you experiencing high ping times due to transmission errors? If so, you may need to have a tech look at your setup and determine whether you have a flaky connection between your computer and the Internet.

Is your ISP reliable? Some ISPs can have weird problems with routers that can manifest as transmission errors. Talk your ISP and see if they can help.

Your DSL/cable modem may have outdated firmware. Your modem may be infected with a worm, or be in a funky state. You should try reinitializing the modem and installing the latest release of drivers and firmware.

Finally, there are known issues with connecting to certain CoH servers that manifest as transmission errors. This appears to be related to network connectivity and routing. The techs at NCsoft may be able to help identify your problems.

Demands from players and competition with other games with fancy graphics options force NCsoft to constantly add new features. Those features place higher demands on your computer memory, graphics hardware and Internet connection.

For their part, NCsoft should reexamine the hardware requirements for the game and state what is currently required for full enjoyment of all the new features.

I have a friend who used dialup until recently, and it appears that the SSK system, running AE missions and customized powers all significantly increase the amount of status data being transmitted on an ongoing basis. We have noticed a doubling or tripling of the standing data rate (2-3K increase) when teaming and starting AE arcs.

Just a casual observation, but it seems that every issue, there's some people who complain about massive lag. The group seems to be different each time, and relatively small. The discussions always turn out the same... a small amount of people complaining about lag, and the majority of people respond by saying they haven't noticed anything, and that it may be a hardware or ISP issue. This seems to repeat every issue release.

Congrats, OP. You were lucky enough to be hit with the lag bat this time around.

The only power customization-associated lag I've noticed is in the costume creator itself when testing out different colors. Default colors work fine, but any custom setting slows things down a bit. I was also on a Rikti Raid shortly after I16 came out and as I recall the performance there was far worse than usual.

Yeah, I've heard several people say mothership raids have gotten worse since I16, but I haven't been on one recently (before or after I16) to really have a decent comparison.

It's bad enough for me that I've canceled my subscription.

I get 1-2 fps. My computer is top end (4gb ram, dual core, premium internet connection, great NVIDIA card, etc). When I run any other game I can turn the graphics to max and experience no lag. In CoH even with the graphics at the absolute minimum the game is unplayable.

It's sad because I much prefer CoH to other games. But with this performance I'm sick of it and moving on to other games. Customer service wasn't able to help me at all.

CoH used to run beautifully prior to i16 for me.

Okay, your computer is about twice as good as mine is, and I run at medium settings, hitting 25-30fps for most of my play time. Ergo, something is wrong on your end, not with the game. I couldn't tell you what is wrong, but something obviously is.

I have to agree. I have a Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM and a 7950GT and my graphics are set pretty high, running a 1680x1050 monitor, and things still run fine. Only lag I've seen since Issue 16 is the usual business in the Imperious TF.

I haven't been on a RWZ raid since Issue 16, but anyone getting 1-2 FPS has something seriously broken. Issue 16 didn't do that.

Then why was it perfect before i16 and not so after?

Coincidence. If your computer is twice as good as mine and is getting about 1/10th my framerate, there is something wrong with your computer.

But like I said, games like Aion, CO, etc run flawlessly on top settings.
It doesn't add up to me.

Try a defrag. The updater tends to fragment files like a ****.

Edit: I can't believe they censor that word. I mean, it's just an M, an F, and two Os.

Kahlan, I'm sure this was brought up by customer service but I had a simular experience with my NVIDIA before I bought my new tower. It seemed like EVERY time they ran a new issue/patch/what-have-you, I either couldn't even get into the game or the game was slowed to glacial speeds. Turns out that with every update you had to go to the NVIDIA site and download the newest driver for the game to work. It might have something to do with your unsatisfactory performance issues.

Hope it helps

It also doesn't add up that people who have rigs half as good as yours aren't experiencing the same or worse problems. If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend hopping over to the Tech Support forum, what you're describing is truly bizarre and obviously not what most people are experiencing.

I want to add that there are performance issues after every issue. It usually takes 2 or 3 patches to get everything optimized.

As was suggested, defrag your hard drive (this will help a lot), get new drivers, and so on... But mostly, be patient and reasonable. If you have a great rig, and someone with an older set up can run the game fine, then it has to be a local issue.

It should also be noted - with the thought that, "If game X runs good on my machine, why doesn't game Y?" - no two games are programmed the same way... some will run better than others for a variety of reasons.

I was having really bad "lag" one night (red bars and sometimes yellow SQUARES on netgraph). I rebooted my router. Awesomeness ensued.

My drivers are all up to date, I tried defragmenting, and I'm plugged directly into my internet connection. It's pretty frustrating.

I only get lag,(slow moving and rubber-banding since i "dont know" what lag is) when there is a ton of peeps on. So my problem is solved!

Posted

The lag must be caused by all those people that aren't there.

You know, the all the people that aren't there that are making CoH into a "ghost town".

Dude, this last week-end, peeps we're on like crazy! But I'm on Virtue, so I don't know. But yes, only when alot of peeps are on, I get massive lag!

I attribute *graphics* "lag" to the fact that not everyone is playing on a state-of-the-art PC.

If I'm on a team of 8, getting serious lag...but the previous night I was on a team of 8 getting NO lag, I assume someone on this team has a less-than-bleeding-edge PC and my framerate has to suffer a bit so we all stay in synch.

And it CAN BE annoying, but I've often BEEN the one with the sub-par PC (even if I'm not at the moment), so I try to have a heart and not get too bent out of shape about it.

Hey, if it bothered me THAT much, I would be in the same boat as this guy. I didn't know if I was the only one experiencing the same thing. Or if I was right about i16, ect.
