Burn/Ice Patch
I find that, as a combination, the two powers actually work pretty well. They only cover small areas, so you'll generally need to pull your targets to a point where they'll bunch up on you, but as long as you can manage that, stuff will melt pretty fast. I'd imagine if you had room in your build for Fiery Embrace/Build Up (my Fire/Ice Tank didn't), it'd be an even greater combination.
I still have to say I'm fairly disappointed with this combo as it stands. I'm running alot of Crey right now (mid 30's), and Ice Patch/Burn is the only trick I have at this point. Everything else is geared towards defense and damage resistance. This could be my fault, and that I need to respec him again, but I think if I just teamed up with an AoE lockdown specialist I'd be much happier. But then that negates the whole reason for Ice Patch.
IMO, IP would need to have a larger radius to make it useful for this build. Too many mobs have enough speed to reach the outer edge of it, egged on by Burn's fear, so that you are constantly jockeying around, trying to gather up your mobs into a Burn patch again, all the while you are taking more damage because they are not all flopping around like bass in the bottom of your boat.
If you have some mates to regularly run around with, I would suggest what ever secondary you want paired with FA, as long as you can team up with a decent controller.
Have fun!
Ice/Patch burn works best if you a herd, I'd also strongly recommend Taunt to keep pulling the mobs back onto the patch.
With Build Up and Fiery Embrace you can tear through orange/red/purple mobs at a good rate.
Fire/Ice is poor against Bosses though so for normal PVE I'd recommend picking up the ST attacks.
L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR
Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller
Fire/Ice Tank can be somewhat of a one trick pony. You will spend a lot of time herding to get optimum use form IP/Burn.
I have had a lot of success with mine even against EB's, so ST damage is still good. I really enjoyed mine with the exception of the first 20 levels, up till then it was just pitiful and a chore to play. After that I took off and had a blast.
Hey folks,
I know about the changes made to both powers from some time ago. Just wondering if these have good synergy still. And if I should expect a really good output of damage versus the effort (Burns dmg vs. mobs running away in fear and cap on ice patch). I do see some folks aren't happy with them because they are looking for more ways to keep foes in vicinity of combined powers. I would rather giggle in glee than somewhat glee. Thanks in advance. |
My shield/ice with SO's is a better tank than my fire/ice. I will have my shield/fire IO'd soon... and my fire/ice will be retired aside from badges again.

Does anyone actually use burn as anything more than a scatter power anymore? Without a troller to lock em down, it doesnt get the full effect of the power. I had thought about getting it on a Kat Scrapper to fight AV's, but that wont be for a while.

Burn can still be a good damage power even without a way to lock everything down as most mobs run out of it but turn around and run right back in.
edit: one of my favorite things to do with my fire/ice tank was team with a stone tank and let him grab aggro with mudpots. Once he had the aggro I could drop burn and the mobs didn't run out of it while aggoed to him. Not sure if it was a bug, but it sure made us very effective.
By itself I don't find the burn + ice patch combo fantastic, but stacking it on top of Frost and Frozen Aura makes for some impressive AoE damage output.
I've never played a brute. Hmmmm something to think about. What server r u on?

My shield/ice would go through missions in 5:40. It would take my fire/ice 9:00 (rounded down to 9:00) to do the exact same mission. It was an AE mission, defeat all on the cargo ship. With just minions and Lt's. The tanks had just SO's for all powers and all attacks were slotted the same. I ran the missions multiple times and annotated the time to complete the defeat all map.
The shield was better against bosses as well, with AAO raising the anemic damage of Ice melee single target attacks.
Shield/Ice > Fire/Ice
Frost and Frozen Aura are nice for AoE.

Well, I have found my fire/ice to be an absolute monster on huge numbers, but only solo. On a team he tends to be okay, mainly because he is sorta of old school herd and burn and most teams tend towards faster steamroller play. So needless to say I love the new difficulty settings in I16. I do find quicksand to be very helpful, it helps to keep the mob in fire's aura as well.

Yeah it's still pretty good and still one of my favorite combos. you do usually -5 on your tick with burn and if you have three reds FE and build up your doing around -11 a tick. Still not as good as before ED but still a great combo and still my primary attack.

A long time ago, there were Fire/Ice Tanks. They wre incredible. Nowadays, not so much. Ice Patch is good on its own, but the radius isnt very high, whereas burn's radius is twice as big or so. They're a great combo on paper, but in practice a combination of taunt, a taunt/damage aura, and AoEs works better.

Burn has a radius 8' and Ice Patch has a radius of 10'. Both only affect 5 enemies at once, regardless of how many are around you.
Solo, a shield/ice is more efficient and faster than a fire/ice.

Maybe a bit off topic but as long as alternates to Fire/Ice are being offered...If you want to use Burn check out Fire/Stone Melee. Start Burn, hit Fault, then Tremor and watch the flames of justice send the goons to the zig. Depending on the situation you may want to mix the order up a bit, but basically it's all good once you get the goons bouncing.

Tanker Tuesdays: Meet in King's Row by IP Gate 6pm PT9pm ET.
1st Tuesday on Champion, 2nd Tuesday on Justice
3rd Tuesdays (Odd months) Freedom, (Even months) Virtue, 4th Tuesday, Tour, Server TBA
Brutal Thrashing Thursdays: Justice (ask Papa Slade when),meet in RWZ 6pm PT9pm ET.

Maybe you meant Seismic Smash...Ugh Fault is a weird one...I have it on a toon but I rem it did mostly knockdown...and out of the whole bunch only 1 or two would fly back...am i wrong on this?

Fault for sure, and Tremor (as I remember) do KD unless the goons are of a lower level. I think minions and maybe LTs fly if they're a couple levels lower, or a KB susceptible group (like clocks). I rarely fight anything under +2s so if there is a KB issue with Tremor I haven't seen it due to the level difference. I'll check it out and post what I get, but as I recall both pretty much keep the goons where you want them.
Seismic Smash is a single target big hit with a hold.

Okay, just got a chance to test, here's what I got just jumping around PI and in one AE with my Level 46.
Tested on Freaks, Nemesis, CoT and Malta
Levels 45+ stayed in place with both Fault and Tremor.
Levels 44- flew about when hit with Fault and Tremor.
I know this isn't an extensive study, but should work to provide the info you're after.

Excellent MUAHAHA!

Just in case Fault and Tremor weren't enough bounce, there's also Energy Torrent from Power Master. It does tend to KB a bit more with even cons (and lower) than the other two but can be a great way to open as it provides KD at range. So you can Energy Torrent>Burn>Fault>Termor (as they get up)>Burn>Fault...etc...
Not that you need to do that, just though I'd mention it.

I use Fault > Burn > Tremor usually as my chain. If you try Tremor > Burn > Fault I find the second knockback doesn't happen, and the mobs do the speed-stunned-stagger out of your Burn Patch.
Note that on a Brute, because of the way pseudo-pets inherit a Damage Buffs duration as well as the buff itself that Fury tends to only affect the first 2 or so seconds of the Burning (after that their inherited Fury Damage buff expires). I've tested it a few times now. Still does nice AOE damage even then (especially with Build Up and Fiery Build-up thingy running).
