Boys and girls

I am female (this word always make me think of Cat People) and I have 1 male hero and 1 male villain - all other characters on both Union and Defiant are females, so I have more than 20 girls and 2 boys.
Reason why I made male characters is that there are some costume options that only males can use.
Still trying to make Huge one - but never seem to find right concept for him.

My best puns have come from girls names so I have more female alts

I'm not alone when I think that some concepts fit the female gender better.

I'm male - I have only played 3 female characters in MMOs in the last ten years.

In 1999 in EverQuest I made my first female MMO character, prompted by my guildmates, around half of whom were male and half female, but most of them played female characters exclusively. Back then, with characters starting on different continents, it wasn't always easy to meet up with friends at low level, so generally you did pick-up groups to L20ish in newbie dungeons then you could survive the long dangerous journey to meet up with friends/guildmates.

Maybe I was asking for trouble - I made a female gnome rogue with blonde pigtails named "Lollypop" (ironically a few years later I met a petite blonde girl in real life named Lolly - woah!). In 20 levels playing that character I experienced so much sexual harassment in pick-up groups, from unwarranted cybering to stalking, that the following happened:

1) I actually felt ashamed to be male;
2) I felt so much sympathy for female players with female avatars;
3) I swore to myself I would never play a female character ever again;
4) I deleted poor little Lollypop;
5) I took a lot of showers and almost resorted to mindbleach
6) I created a male troll shaman instead - ironically he was never sexually harassed, despite his rather fetching moob cleavage and lovely swamp-green complexion.

For the following nine years I played mainly male characters, the few exceptions being robots or gender-less monsters of various kinds.

Then CoH/V gave us VEATs. I love lore and a male Night Widow just felt wrong, so I risked it and now I have a L50 female Night Widow - and it doesn't feel weird to play her - mainly because CoH in 2009 isn't a testosterone-soaked pit of neolithic sexism like EverQuest was in 1999. So I also made a female Dark/Sonic Defender because the concept I had in mind (a banshee) also called for a female character, and she is L20 now.

In future I'll still mostly play male characters - most of my concepts are male and I associate with my characters more closely when they're male, because I'm male - but at least when I have a concept that demands a female avatar I won't be too freaked out to play it

Male playing about 95% males. Every once in a while I get a concept in my head that calls for a female character, but they all end up looking like hookers, so I end up not playing them.

I play male characters almost exclusively. Entirely exclusively until recently Just havn't been able to connect with a look and a backstory. Until recently. Now I have two female characters that are pretty cool!

That said, most of the female gamers I know play almost exclusively male characters because they don't like the way they get treated on female characters.

I'm a guy, and I find I play around 70% girls, and 30% guys.
This is mostly because when I visualise my concept, it has curves. Although a large factor is that the female costume designer owns the male one.

I pretty much exclusively play female toons. Aesthetically, the costume options, animations and looks are generally far better (two examples that spring to mind: The male run animation is frankly awful, and they still don't have a decent long hair option for male characters, along the lines of the lengths you can get female hair to.) In rp terms, I kept getting accused of being female until I actually mentioned I was male/posted on the forums with this name admitting the characters were mine (pre-totalcat.)

To be fair, it's more an aesthetic choice than a psychosocial one. I don't think "must only create female characters," it just kind of happens.

I play as both, oddly I'm male and my signature toon is Female.

of my 50's thus far it's 4 for the boys and 6 for the girls.

But it's all in the concept for me.

Some toon concepts just seem to be one way or the other. Or sometimes it's in the name.

For example, Knightingale (my signature toon) started life as a Huge Male character called 'White Knight' when I created him. He was a big suit of armour wearing battlefield healer who'd been thrown forwards in time from Medieval times..... However these were the days before name checking was available and after carefully creating him I found the name 'The White Knight' was not available.

So I did some googling and decided to go with Nightingale, as in Florence Nightingale, but with a 'K' in the front to signify where the toon started. But Knightingale sounded wrong for a Male toon and so the sex was changed to female. And then the whole medieval Knight schtick didn't fit so the origin changed too to her being a mutant.

My Rad Corruptor F411-OUT was meant to have inherited his radiation based powers after being a firefighter based at Chernobyl. This seemed to dictate in my head that the character should be male and hence it was so.

The reason that the girls are so heavily favoured in my 50's stable is simply to do with my Khelds. Both Knight.Shade and Knight.Bringer were Khelds merged with clones of Knightingale, and hence had to be the same as her. (In my head it's my way of justifying all three of them being able to run around Paragon at the same time).

Blueside Level 50's.... Knightingale (Def), Rogue Elevenex (Blast), Lady Rogue (Scrap), Mr Infinity (Tank), Miss Infinity (Troller), Knight.Shade (WS), Knight.Bringer (PB)
Redside Level 50's... Colonel Rogue (Brute), Sergeant Domino (Stalk), F411-OUT (Dom)
Next Project: Psiryn Psi/Psi Cor Global Handle is @Knightingale

^ This. I'm pretty much the same. I have a few male characters, but the animations and costume options are so much better for female avatars... The male's run like they're trying to hold something between their butt cheeks...

You should see the run on my Female Thugs MM. It looks like she's swining a couple of jugs back and forth when she has her pistols out.

A few males, more females though. There does tend to be a lot better options for female characters like being able to wear a T-Shirt over skin which I'd love to do with my main male but can't because the option isn't there and under the Sleeved Jackets; the short sleeve only covers unmapped arms (patterns only cover the chest and not the arms of the torso). Then there's also the lack of shorts on males that aren't skin-tight hot pants or a 36 month vet reward.

So I'm with the 'females look better/have better options' crowd.

I have many toons, but only two are male. Of my 50's all are female except one. Female character creator owns the male one completely and I just like the idea of a 'weak' female being able to hold her own with the guys. Surely that's the epitome of being super? Overcoming the inherent 'weakness' of being female and yet still being super?

Male animations and sounds suck *** too. I do not have a previous back injury but the male run animations make me look like a hunched over ape of some sort.

Guy BTW.

Most of my names and concepts do ask for a female though. Cupid's Sister speaks for itself, Boudicea was female anyway. Can't have a guy called Tess can we? A miss that's a Mr? Never! Maiden of Mayhem? A lady, obviously. I guess Twinslash could have been a guy but the movements and athleticism of the twin blades set just made me think of a quick and agile female. Sure, you get Male Angels, but for some reaon a Controller came across as female whereas some of the more melee focused characters in the now defunct concept group I created her for were male. Powertrix was a lab assistant for Crey, the professor was a chauvanist pig who liked to surround himself with pretty ladies. Mae is a ladies name.

I mostly play male alts. However when I first started playing I shared my account with my ex who got ownership of Onion, but she managed to slip a female alt onto Defiant called Krysalis. When she stopped playing the game I deleted all but Krysalis and Kara Solaris (DM/Inv Scrapper on Onion). I play them once in a while as I promised to get them to 50 for my ex...that was back in Apr 2005 and they're still lvl45 & 16 respectively!

Back in the day I was a pretty naive gamer when it came to MMORPG gender. I never thought of male gamers playing female alts and vice versa (which was stoopid I knows it). Well the CoH certainly opened my eyes!

In fact I think I've perv'd on your alt before...the very first time we teamed back in the first few months of EU release...

I was the only male hero in that team...I felt privilaged. ^__^

usually my toons are bots, but I have one female toon. It took some deciding if I want to or not, but this voice in my head said "hey dude, if you're gonna spen hours staring at a butt running and jumping and flying, it may as well be a chick's butt"

And so Princess Darkfire was born......

All male, except for one robot, and one female on test I've made during I16 beta (To test Traps/A). Ended up rolling Traps/Dark with a completely different concept on live.

I play both

For me it's how the character grabs me conceptually, rather than their sex, that makes it a character worth playing.

Robots and guys. I have one main girl, Kitsune Vixen, and her alt power builds. I...think I play her fairly well these days.
Although I have had a slew of female characters, simply because they fit well for the concepts. In two of the cases the concept revolves around them being female.

The rest are guys or robots, really. Being a guy makes playing guys easy, and I've hung around with enough variety of girls at school, college and now Uni to get a decent idea of variation and whatnot.
