Okay I guess I need to set this one up.

Everyone on the art Forums should know you Feral Kat is and By extension who Feral Kitty is.

The impression I get from Katfood's art and stories is the two kinda play a game of cat and mouse. (no pun intended) Kitty is constantly searching for ways to remove the obstacle of Feral Kat, so she can do whatever it is she wants to do. Or her objective is simply to see how many ways she can get one up on Kat.

Here's where I come in.

Lady Lylith, she's my first and favorite character, is currently traveling the multi-verse searching for entertainment and as always new pets.

Lyl having witnessed a scuffle between Kat and Kitty, was intrigued by the dicatomy of the two equally matched Feral's decided to see if she could make one or both of them her newest pets. She approached Kitty first, and Kitty was shall we say less then enthusiastic about becoming someones pet. Lyl not wanting to be rude appologized for the intrusion and even loaned her First and Favored Pet Kiarra to Kitty for her use for a short time.

Kiarra's bio can be found here.

and with out further ado....Feral Kitty & Kiarra

There are a couple areas in the piece that immediately jumped out on me that you might want to work on.

Feral Kitty's legs crossed the line from "stylistically exaggerated" to incorrect a bit. Her torso is more or less in proportion to itself, but the legs are definitely not in proportion to the torso. They're much too long/large. I counted her out to about 7.5-8 heads, and her legs are 4.5-5 of that. Its an easy mistake to make.

The second item is her tail. It seems like its going back from her, but that shouldn't be the case since she's against a wall. If its going alongside the wall, a helpful change to convey that would be to have some of it overlapping itself, so we can see which parts are coming forward in space and in what direction.

Keep working at it!

Yeah I can see that her Torso does look a bit small in comparison to her legs I blame the game the proportions were taken right off another character screen shot.

and how do I show overlap with black on black detailing?

Posted

Heh, don't use black on black

Posted

I think I know how to fix it.

Just so I know for future reference what are the proper proportions for the human body?

One simple rule of thumb is that the pubis is roughly the halfway point of the entire figure. Some people with have shorter/longer legs or torso, but it won't be a huge deviation from the norm. This is also just about the area where the bend line between the torso and legs are.

I understand how the anatomy works. I just got the proportions of it wrong.

What can I say I'm a leg and butt man.

Anyway working on some fixes and some color just for the fun of it.

Posted

So, Wassy does big heads and Scootz does long legz! I don't see a problem there!! I likes your artz, Scootz! YEAH FOR LONG LEGZ!! I wish my legz were long!

I didn't say the workings were wrong, I was pointing out that the point where torso and legs bend can also be used for a size reference.

Nothing wrong with corny Scooter! Nice improvement overall! Keep up the good work!

"In human anatomy or in mammals in general, the mons pubis (Latin for "pubic mound"), also known as the mons veneris (Latin, mound of Venus) or simply the mons, is the fatty tissue lying above the pubic bone of adult women, anterior to the symphysis pubis. The mons pubis forms the anterior portion of the vulva, and limits the perineal region proximally and anteriorly." - wikipedia

Or in layman terms (and if your not a girl) the "crotch" or "groin" is the halfway point for an illustrated human that is based on a 8 1/2 head model. But even with that said, slightly above that (the hips) would be a more true halfway point.

Anyways, I think the rendering of Kiarra's facial expression was done very well.

Eh, I've found that the pubis comes to halfway more often than not (or the aforementioned bend line). The hip bones end up slightly high.

I was referring to sympysis pubis - that bony protrusion in the front. Which men do have as well =P

Its splitting hairs though, really.

Posted

Heh. Well thanks for clarifying which pubis you were referring to.

And in regards to splitting hairs, the bend would be slightly higher on male versus female figures since the female pelvic region in general is shaped/positioned differently, i.e. lower and wider.

I would not interpret what is happening in this thread as a jacking, its clarification for your benefit. I would also be careful if I were you not to offend folks who are trying to help you improve.

okay... I just learned more anatomy by reading this thread then I did all through high school.... I'm not sure what to think about that.

On a more accurate note, nice work on the art Scoot. I'm seeing a lot of improvement.

The most interesting part of all of this is I'm not leaning on my vast experience with nude females.... we used a male model 80% of the time in Figure Drawing!

I'll never.... EVER be able to forget the pubis as a good halfway landmark. It was like the second week of class and the teacher was pointing out these reference points right on the model... and THAT one was... you know.... 2 inches from his junk.

But in all the many exercises afterward of having to get a figure accurately into a defined space, using that reference point to determine your halfway point always worked quite well for me... creepy though it is
