MAC users announcement: Snow Leopard and Tiger OS
Augh, "Mac" isn't supposed to be in all caps.
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
I just discovered this an hour ago when I tried to dl the test server. Booo..now i have to dl and install a whole new OS

basically, if you see a miki on Triumph, it's probably cute and it's probably me.
Huge thanks to cuppamanga and all the folks in the mac help forum for prolonging my borrowed time on this game.
Would it be possible to get a general idea on when the game I pay a subscription to will suddenly no longer work for me? I personally am on a tight budget these days and the $25 to upgrade is actually something I need to budget in.

I find it amusing that this game still supports XP but not OS X 10.4, despite XP being several years *older* than said OS X version. I don't really find it amusing to have to upgrade an OS which is working perfectly fine for everything else. At least I have an XP partition.

This is what it means to be a tank!
The CoH Mac client actually requires MacOS 10.5.7 at least. If you're running Leopard you can upgrade to a suitable version by simply running Software Update.
Also, Snow Leopard is only $30, and plenty are in stock at Apple stores and Amazon. It takes about 45 minutes to install. EDIT: If you're using Leopard you can use the $30 upgrade. Tiger users need the $169 box set with iLife. I read that the $30 one might work with Tiger anyhow, but I can't verify that.
If you're using an EFI-X or Chameleon based "hackintosh" to play, both will support 10.5.7 and 10.5.8, so don't worry about upgrading that far. Snow Leopard is currently not supported by either of those solutions.
While I don't like copies of MacOS X hacked to run on any PC, they are up to at least 10.5.7 now, and some of them supply much smaller updates you can install instead of doing a full install.
Though you shouldn't be playing on a work computer, if you really feel you need to and you're forbidden to software update it, send me a PM and I'll determine if you can use an *UNSUPPORTED* workaround. It's at your own risk - if you do that, CoH may crash horribly and NC Support won't help you. It also probably won't work in Tiger, but might in earlier Leopard versions.

That's because there's really not much change in the Windows API's from XP to Vista. Software designers for Windows tend to shoot for the lowest possible platform (windows xp) because of the large number of people who refuse to upgrade. Mac users tend to stay closer to the latest version.

I suddenly can not get my test server to run the last build on 10.5.8....Always get application not responding.
That sounds like something you should email Support about - probably it's related to that corrupted cache issue again. I really need to get that workaround stickied somehow...

So, if I'm still running 10.4, (I have been waiting months for 10.6 so I could upgrade) I have to spend $169, when I don't really need the rest of the iLife Package?
Anyone know if you can get a stripped down upgrade without the rest of the crap I don't need? Will the $30 upgrade work?
Pound for Pound, the Amoeba is the most vicious animal on earth.
If you don't have leopard, you should buy the $169 version. The EULA of the $30 upgrade requires that you have a valid Leopard license. That said...
The $30 disc is the same as the $169 disc. It does not check for Leopard before installing.

When double click on the app in applications the icon appears in the dock, and thats it. When you click on it, it says Application Not Responding and I have to force quit. The updater never shows up at all. Again, was working fine until that last patch. I have even tried installing test server a couple times now...

More questions:
1. Is that where the console log ends or is there more to it?
2. If you open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type "ping cohtestupdate.coh.com" and hit Return. What does it say when you do that?
3. Is your MacOS X system set to use U.S. English?
4. And lastly, have you tried this: Go to Users > (yourusername) > Library > Preferences and throw out "City of Heroes Training Room Preferences" (or something similar, the name varies). Does that allow the CoH client to launch?

1. thats the end of the log.
2. PING cohtestupdate.coh.com (216.107.254.201): 56 data bytes
3. English only.
4. I trashed the entire preference folder for test, it pops up, has to update patches, verify files and fixes files.....then when done, application not responding.

yup
It looks like you have a network issue, for some reason the Updater is unable to reach the IP 216.107.254.201 (where the training room patch server is located). If you leave PING running long enough it would say host unreachable (mine says host timeout, which is normal).
Next open Terminal again and type "traceroute cohtestupdate.coh.com". Post the results here, except skip the part where it shows trace steps with asterisks - that part is normal at a certain point. If the traceroute never runs (shows zero steps) that confirms you have a network issue. Call your ISP and see if they can help with that, and also update your NC Support ticket online.

With Issue 15, we included a warning in the official release notes, advising MAC users that Tiger is not an officially supported Operating System for City of Heroes, and that when Snow Leopard launches, players using OS X Tiger may not be able to run City of Heroes.
As of Friday, August 28th 2009, the Snow Leopard OS has officially launched. As a result, the Tiger Operating System will no longer run City of Heroes on the Training Room server, and will not run City of Heroes on the Live servers when Issue 16 launches. MAC users can upgrade to the Leopard or Snow Leopard Operating Systems to continue playing City of Heroes, which will also allow us to be able to help you with technical issues you may be encountering.
We thank you for your patience as we endeavor to assist our MAC users as best as we can.
