This entire argument is flawed because there hasn't been any evidence that if given a chance to run a traditional offense, Vick couldn't do it. Incidentally, the same argument and the same knock was made against pretty much all prominent mobile quarterbacks of the modern era. McNabb, Cunningham, Young, Elway, all of them were said to be incapable of running 'mainstream' offenses due to their mobility. Considering the fact that two of them are Hall of Famers (with rings), and the other two morphed into pocket passers later in their careers (you know, when their mobility dipped), I don't think it's a fair assertion.

It's like saying LaDainian Tomlinson can't run in the 1-cut because he's never done it before. Vick has never worked in an offense with the weapons the Eagles have. DeSean is coming into his own as a go-to receiver, Maclin is giving safeties fits, and the other receivers fit the system so well, Vick wouldn't HAVE to run as much (unlike the situation when he was in Atlanta). Furthermore, if LeSean McCoy develops quickly, it bolsters the running game so opposing safeties will have to play closer to the line of scrimmage which further frees your receivers. With a quarterback like Vick (and his notorious mobility) paired with a feared running attack, play action (and bootlegs, real or faked) takes on a whole new dimension.

For good reason. Mike Brown (heck, the Brown family) is probably one of the most inept GMs/owners in the league. Only Al Davis is worse. I still don't understand why you take headcase Andre Smith that high, instead of trading down and taking Phil Loadholt (a better pass protector, at a cheaper slot price, with additional picks to boot) when you have THAT quarterback with his history. I see Smith turning into another Tony Mandarich/Robert Gallery type (read: F L O P !), which would fit the Bengals.

It's a good move. It costs them nothing and adding another dimension to your special teams is usually a good thing. Casual fans don't tend to understand how integral special teams can be to a team's success (the battle of field position). You don't have to be Devin Hester to be a successful return man (though nobody would complain if you were ).

Yeah, remember back when San Francisco used to use the Falcons as their own personal whipping boys?

Yeah... that was a long time ago.

Grew up in Steeler country, and will always be a Steelers fan, even here in northern Ohio where the Browns are the big thing. And congrats to the Cincinatti fans... Taibbi from Rolling Stone actually called them coming out of the gate with all the makings of either a great team, or a disaster of unbelievable proportions. looks like they've done well so far.

I cheer on the Saints when I see them on. I don't expect much, but I cheer for them anyway.

As I sat watching those games I was thinking "Ok I see Greenbay on the field, where are the Lions? I see the Patriots......but who are those high school football players disguised as the Titans?"

Green Bay was clearly out to the teach the Lions how to play football as everything the Lions did wrong, Green Bay would do right: example: Lions do a weak screen play and GB gets the ball then GB does their own screen play which works.....also Green Bay was bound and determined to make sure the Lions were humiliated via a shut out. Go Green Bay!

I'm with you except for the Collins thing. Sorry, no real improvement there.

Yeah, I feel ya. At least the Rams and the Titans are also winless so far this year, so we're not alone. I hope we win at least one game.. ONE GAME.. so we don't have an entirely winless season.. again. For the longest time we were the only team in the NFL to have a winless season, until the Lions last year. If we go winless this year we'll be the only team in the NFL to have two winless seasons under our belts.. more than 30 years apart no less! ;_;

I think starting Leftwitch was a mistake, and we'd have done better this season so far with Johnson or McCown at the helm. We might still be winless, but Josh has put more points on the board and led the team better than Byron ever did.

We also need an offensive line that can protect the QB and make holes for the RBs. This has been a problem for YEARS and it just never seems to get any better.

Now we get to fly to London and get our butts handed to us by the Pats (WHY DO THEY DO THIS?! WHO SCHEDULES THESE GAMES?! Is this really how we want to present the NFL to the rest of the world: here watch this one team beat the living snot out of this other team"? ARG!!) So then we can go into our bye 0-7.

*sadface*

As a lifelong Detroit fan (yeah, you can laugh) I'm at a complete loss for this team. Defensively, they're pathetic. They have no secondary coverage on the defense, and up front they struggle to get any real pressure on the QB. This is mind boggling since Jim Schwartz is a Defensive GUY. That was his SHTICK in Tenessee, and Detroit's STILL one of the worst in the league.

Your offense is offensive. Your O-line is still a complete joke, which nixes your chances at establishing any decent running game and nullifies your passing game. Raiola and Backus don't work. WHY are they still there? What are the Lion's averaging now? Three or four sacks a game? Not to mention that in the air, you're one big weapon in Calvin Johnson is wildly inconsistent. He makes some amazing catches, but then when he DOES actually get a pass at the numbers, he drops the ball. It's as if he's completely useless if he has to turn his hands down to catch a pass.

So, your lines are terrible on both sides of the ball, you have no defensive secondary, your overpriced quarterback of the future may just turn out to be another Joey Harrington, and even your special teams are just shy of a complete mess. New coaches, new players, same damn Lions. Are we surprised? Not particularly, but frustrating nonetheless.

The curse of Bobby Lane persists...are we sure he didn't say "60 years"?

To be fair, you could have your pick of pretty much any of the current guaranteed-HoF-bound quarterbacks in the league and they wouldn't be able to do jack with the offensive line and receivers the lions have right now.

I mean, that's not to say that any of the lions QBs are actually *good*, but nowadays judging the ability of a quarterback by how well they do playing for the lions is kinda like judging the performance of a raincoat by seeing how dry it keeps you when you jump in the ocean.

Touche.

I still maintain Stafford was overpriced, however. I'm not really convinced yet that anyone came out of this latest draft that was worth 40+ million dollars, not the least of which is a QB that's going to get his *** kicked repeatedly with the Lions, has a hard time with accuracy when he DOES get time to throw, and has thrown two or more picks in every start because he doesn't get any air under the ball.

And go figure, he's already side-lined with an injury. How...appropriate. *sigh*

taking all bets...who, if anyone, is going to topple the Colts and Saints?

Posted

If you are a Colts fan, you have my deepest sympathies, and I'm not being facetious. Whoever made the boneheaded decision to pull your starters 1.5 games from a perfect season deserves to be blindfolded, put in a shack, and then all of the Indianapolis Colts players allowed to march through one-by-one with baseball bats.

I am still in shock at the stupidity of Chris Polian and/or Jim Caldwell. Super Bowl glory lasts for a season, maybe two if you're really good. Perfect season glory, that lasts for 37 years and counting. Think about it. Most sports fans know that the Miami Dolphins had a perfect season in 1972. How many people know who won the Super Bowl the year after? The year before? Sure, there are some sports nuts who probably know, but the real answer is hardly anyone. To take that kind of historical moment away from the players who have worked so hard all season is a disgrace on the management of the franchise.

From the editorials I've read coming out of Indianapolis, most of the fans are devastated. They had built their excitement to a fervor in having something so important so close to them. If I had tickets to that game, I'd seriously be raising hell in demanding my money back. I know I'd probably be screwed and wouldn't be able to get it, but to me, there's an implicit contract with the fans that we will support our team, and in return, they will make an honest effort to try their best to win the game.

I honestly think that the players are devastated. I saw the looks on their faces when they were pulled from the game. I saw the disappointment as the game slipped away from them. From the time they were pee-wee players, they've had it ingrained into their heads that they have to give it all they've got. As professional players, they are paid millions of dollars to be the best damn sportsmen in the world. Here, they have a chance not just to prove that they're the best in the league, but to be the first team in NFL history to win a perfect 19-game season.

I have to think that this will have all sorts of bad ramifications for the team going into the postseason. Ponder this. The Colts management basically said, "This game doesn't really matter." If you're a player, what does that mean? A linebacker thinks, "We're ahead by four and I doubt that a pass will come my way, so this play doesn't really matter." Bam, touchdown, you've lost the game.

I'm so sick of hearing how the players have to go into the playoffs as "healthy and fresh" as possible. Peyton Manning has played for twelve years and never missed a game, not one single time. That's around 170 consecutive games. Will those 1.5 games he's resting now really make a positive difference? These guys are professionals. They don't need to be "fresh" to play. They don't really even have to be completely healthy. Before you feel too sorry for them, remember that most of the starters will make more money in one season than most people make in a lifetime. That's why.

Most of these guys even already have Super Bowl champion rings from the 2006-7 season, when the Colts took home the Lombardi trophy. Would another Super Bowl championship be nice? Sure. But I know that if I'm a Colt and I already have one of those rings, I've got to be thinking, "I don't want another ring, I've been there, done that. I want my name in the history books for all time!"

Now, no matter how the season ends, the Colts are in a lose-lose situation. If they go all the way and win the Super Bowl, the season will be marred by the fact that for want of around 20 more minutes of play time, these players will be denied their rightful place in the annals of NFL history. If they don't, people (myself included) will always believe that it is because the franchise management dealt the players and the fans an irrevocable blow to morale 1.5 games away from a perfect season.

To the Colts players and fans, my hat's off to you for a season so well played. You really deserved that perfection, and I hope that you get Polian's/Caldwell's head on a platter for denying it to you. To Colts management, I give you my heartiest "BOOOO" for displaying an unforgivable morale-busting lapse in sportsmanship.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
