Is there a secret to leveling?
Yeah, the only IOs I normally bother to pick up before close to 50 is a -knockback (depending on AT) and a Stealth. Not much else before that point you really need set bonuses for, though once in awhile now I'm starting set slotting in the 30s if (1) its a set that caps out there or (2) I really want this character to be able to exemp back down for TFs.
But no way do I want to have to get sets at 30, then again at 50 if I don't have some reason for it.
Did it occur to you that part of the reason it's a bad team is because it admits people under 35? Since AE came out, I've been doing 22+ and kicking anyone who didn't have at least one IO set bonus listed under powers - because some people don't slot -anything- into their powers and expect teams to drag them to 50. These players are still going to be missing important powers from their primary and secondary sets though, and flat out will not be as effective as higher level characters.

Please tell me this is a joke.
Just because I don't slot sets into my toons (No, not even most of my 50's, it's not worth it to me inf-wise) that means you have to -drag- me around? Apparently it's too difficult to look at anything else in the character profile. If a glaring set bonus doesn't jump out at you, then obviously the player with (OMG) -only- six vet badges obviously doesn't know how to play! Everyone without set bonuses is obviously missing important powers from their primary and secondary.
Which leads me to my next question: How do -you- know what is a an important power missing from -my- toon?
I've seen just as many people who were vets with all the "right" powers know absolute zilch about the game. I mean right down to the fact that a thermal should be using the shields that they took during power selection.
getting PLed is pointless, unless the ONLY reason you're doing this is to create a PvP character.

To some people the "game" is to find a way to get to max level as fast as possible. They go through great lenghths developing toons and arcs and plans to do so. That's fun for them. They deserve to play the game, too.
I do agree that finding a guy with a level 50 who doesn't know anything about enhancements makes me a little sad and upset because it should be a respectable accomplishment. Making level 50 a task that only involves showing up and joining the right team for one afternoon cheapens this game and that's something Dev's and the Long-term community caresabout. But you can say that without saying someone else's playstyle is wrong.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
This person may be"dual boxing" AE missions with two accounts, or even worse, is an "AE baby."

It's nothing to do with player skill (how to play) and everything to do with available options and total number of powers available. Many players spend 5 power slots between 6 and 20 getting travel powers and stamina; this is less of an issue as levels increase and they can pick more offensive or defensive options to round out their toolbox.
The set bonus thing is just the only way I can tell that a character has spent any time and effort on slotting -anything- into their powers, unless they have a buff I can right click and check - which is usually what I do with crabs. More than 10% defense from TT:Maneuvers? You're in.
Set bonuses aren't my exclusive criteria. They're one thing that will get me to invite someone who's lower level, because they show that forethought and planning have gone into the creation of the character. I can reasonably expect a similar degree of thought and skill in the way the character is played.
I'm not trying to recruit only the best players - I'm trying to avoid most of the worst players. CoV doesn't make that easy, though notes help a lot. Heck, I'll AE farm with lowbie stalkers if they put in an effort, which by farmer standards is practically magnanimous. I'm just trying to avoid 'that AFK guy' and 'how do I shot web?'.
Purely in the interests of science: If you were level pacted with someone who was ALSO PL'ing on a different team... is there any way to leverage that into more XP/sec? I can't think of one.
As far as the "40 to 44 in 4 hours": if you're not at the BOTTOM of 40, it would be easier. The 40-50 game, playing relatively normally, goes by on fast hard-hitting teams at around 1 level per hour.
The "40-50 takes as long as 1-40" was true when they first added the 40-50 game, but when they tweaked levelling speeds that was one of the spots they sped way up.
... unless you meant "Because you're no longer getting yoinked along by a team that's +5 to you."

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
I did some calculations based on Paragon Wiki's XP rules and that says you'd have to kill about 10K level 54 bosses to do it assuming that you SK the character to level 50 and have a team of 8.
A two person team fighting level 50 bosses would have to kill 6.6K bosses (assuming the lowbie is SK'd to level 46). A two person team with the lowbie SK'd to 50 fighting level 54s would need to kill about 5K Those are kinda the extremes but with varying team size versus boss level to optimize kill time I'm starting to think you could get a high enough kill rate to do it in four hours. |
My fire/kin can blast through level 50 maniac slammers. Add a high damage tank or scrapper into the mix, and they are falling over like dominos. Now throw a level 45 toon into that who is sitting at the door, and a map padded and spawned for a team of 8 on City 02 ruined, yeah I can see someone getting to level 50 in 2, maybe 3 runs and quite quickly.

Well, for me, it's not how fast I get levels, it's how much fun I have playing. Levels happen.

Excellent post.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Words fail me in expressing agreement with the sentiment and praise for the beauty and economy of words in its expression.

Generally, someone will always be levelling faster than you. Unless you've decided that you have fun by levelling as fast as possible, and some do, then you should not worry about it.
I have a pretty vanilla motorcycle (pictured at left), and there sure is a bunch of bikes out there that can smoke me, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying putt-putting around town at my own speed.
www.paragonwiki.com is a great source of information for this game.

Haven't read the whole thread but my guess is they didn't level ultra-fast. They probably had switched to a second build and hadn't trained up yet. That build would show up as level 1 to other players, wouldn't it?
