This is actually what I came to this thread to complain about. In long threads it's quite possible that you want to quote someone who is in turn quoting another post that is pages back from the end of the thread. It's impractical to have to manually multiquote.

Please just change the behavior of the quote mechanism so that it quotes the ENTIRE post being replied to, including any nested quotes. As it stands now, it can be difficult to follow a debate because key context is often missing.

You can either open it in new tabs (for firefox) or (possibly easier) multi-quote the first message, back up to the most recent, multi-quote that one and keep backing up through each earlier message until you get to the last one you want, then press the "quote" button to start the reply.

They'll all be in your reply screen, in the correct chronological sequence (I checked). No searching required.

Let me reiterate that this is a step backwards from simple quoting of FULL messages. The board software is actually explicitly stripping embedded quotes. I'd rather that code be disabled and embedded quotes be left in. Using the technique you outline to do multiquotes is laborious compared to the old boards that simply did the right thing automatically.

Edit: to elaborate a bit more, I actually have tried the method Cende suggests. One huge weakness is if someone quotes just an excerpt of a post, as I did above. To get the reply looking right, you have to first open any referred-to posts, use the multiquote feature, then when you reply you have to carefully strip out the unused parts of the posts. For example, you'd have to manually strip oout the first 2 paragraphs of Cende's post that I quoted. Lame. Much simpler to do full quotes of posts so that all embedded quotes come through in full fidelity. I know that the mods don't like quote pyramids, but being able to quote more than one user in a conversation is foundational functionality for good forum software.

I know this is going to come across as totally trivial (and it is), but: while I appreciate the new emoticons, the "rolleyes" one is more like most IM's "cute" smileys. The eyes need to be looking skyward! Who rolls their eyes by looking at the floor, fer cryin' out loud?

Gack! Why am I suddenly getting notices of old replies? Is anybody else getting these?

I'm seeing several reports in the Technical Issues and Bugs forums.

I think it may be due to some tweaking being done on the back end to try to tame the new forum software.

If so, the changes they are making are causing the unintended side-effect of old notifications resending.

Just a guess.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Okay, I was wrong. Found a post by Moderator08 about it.
