I have, but that's not the point! I'd like a proper, up to date, installer!! Besides, not everyone HAS a DVD burner, you know. Even in this day and age...
[/ QUOTE ]So what's that .iso going to be good for?
[/ QUOTE ]
Installing from a disc image.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's an awfully convulted way to go about things.
Just zip the folder into a ZIP or RAR file so, far easier to re-extract rather than messing with ISOs and the software to do so is (sorta) free with WinRAR.

Well, for a start, it would open the possibility of mirrors hosting the ISO, and for people who seem to get very slow downloads via the updater, would probably mean they can download the game a lot faster.

Why would you want a all flashy installer program, if just a copy/past and run the updater is enough to get playing?
If you are that desperate on a installer, make one yourself. Enough tools to be found for it.
They have chosen to keep it all on their side, no mirrors no iso's or such. Cheaper to distribute, easier to maintain.
Personaly i like that system, just like GW. Just a few MB download, run it, let it go and its all done ready to go.

But why a disk image rather than just a simple compressed archive?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because ISO's are easier to handle than archive's. A disc image you can just mount and you're off. An archive you have to unzip/unrar, requiring a minimum of double the disc space, and for a 3.5GB+ file, that would take a fair while, especially on older machines.

[/ QUOTE ]An ISO will require the space for the ISO and the space for the installed game files. A rar will require space for the rar and the extracted game files. Those sums are pretty much the same.

Actually, you're wrong there. A rar file ALSO requires the same amount of space in your windows temp folder, so you actually need double the space.

You don't need to install the game so why would you need an iso at all?
you just need the game client.

Yes... I just need the game client, and a decent connection speed to NC's update servers. Yeah.. Right.
How often do we see folks on here complaining about 4K download speeds? Not to mention the game using some torrenting ports, so scumbag companies like Virgin Media drop the hammer of throttling on top of you...

The point is it doesn't need to be an iso or a zip/Rar file just a folder with the game client in it. anything else is pointless.

If you already HAVE the game client, I agree, but what if you don't?
What about people who have just bought it? Or people who've been away for several issues? Or people who didn't backup and had a HD failure? They don't have the client, or at least, not a recent one. Seeing as NC have seen fit NOT to issue a new boxed copy in the EU for some unfathomable reason, surely at least making an ISO copy available for people to download can't actually hurt?
What's wrong with making things that little bit easier for people, hmm?

I meant for download. An iso isn't necessary as the game does not need to install like that. the game data will not be that compressed by a Zip or Rar archive.
I agree that some alternate sources of download are needed but you don't need an Iso or Zip/rar file, They just muddy the waters.
An ISO simplifies things into just being a single file to download. A rar can be equally simple, but can be a bugger to unpack. Downloading the files as they exist in the game folder? Man, what a pain that would be... You wouldn't know if you'd gotten them all or not...

Anything that requires more software to use it, is not a simplification.
Edit: that is what the Updater is for, it will verify the game file and get you anything that was missed. Minimising the amount downloaded from the servers.
I, too, want a box with a nice new disk and goodies etc. etc. Later on this year, if I have to choose between a shiny new box full of CO or DCUO and a multi-gig, soul-crushingly unending download full of CoH...
These guys can't keep repeating the line that we in the EU are considered equally as important as their North American subscribers when they repeatedly pull this kind of malarkey.
Especially these days, when our subs buy many more of those crumpled old US dollars than they ever have...

Dude... are subs are about even, given that the dollar subscription is a more in pure numbers terms ($15 afaik)

In this particular area we'd need to be more important than the US to get the same level of attention.
If they launched new boxes over here they'd:
1) Be very very likely to get a significantly smaller return, judging from current EU vs US playerbases
2) Have significantly greater costs, given the need to localise packaging, sort out different nationalities' distribution systems, etc...
Smaller return for higher cost - wanting to avoid that isn't really a matter of picking on us.

[/ QUOTE ]It's far more likely that the average user is able to unpack a zip/rar (especially a self-extracting archive), than that they know how to mount a disk image.

No but just last week she thought she was which was a big wakeup call that i do need to grow up, but she wasnt so i grew back down again Though if im honest i cant WAIT to have my own kids!
Oh and back ontopic . . . . . my head hurts from this techno gabble I agree an uptodate version to download would be VERY good (simple words, simple minds).

Indeed. I had my head on backwards. The sad truth is that a UK sub is now worth LESS than a US sub (about $13.50). Now I'm bracing myself for an increase in UK subs if the pound doesn't recover...
It's been one of those days... Why can't days just be happy places filled with sunshine and bunnies? Instead they seem to be relentless abattoirs of the soul...
...still want my shiny box, though...
I have to agree with FFM. I know a couple of people that are not on superfast broadband, and would like a copy of the game in original format. I can(did) cut them a copy from my client but an ISO would be nice. It could also get distributed via something like torrent so it would be much quicker to download. I know some games actually offered there updates as torrents at one point, can't remember who at the moment though.
