Cryptic Headhunting?
[ QUOTE ]
Yeah, I applied for beta and haven't been invited.
I wonder if they wanted specific people "Arcaneville please come fix our game for us?".
[/ QUOTE ]
To be honest, I'd want Arcanaville to come fix my game if I was making one.
To be honest, it's not what they did that's the problem for me. It's how they did it. To use a slightly weird analogy, it's like someone going into a McDonalds, buying a Big Mac, then handing out flyers for taste tests at the Burger King down the road.
The word is "rude". Possibly "insulting". Yes, try to get players from other games you're in direct competition with. Fine by me. But doing it in their game and official forum? That's too much.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*
Personally I think their judgement was off somewhat, perhaps skewed by the fact that they made the game what it is up to a couple of Issues ago and that up until fairly recently owned part of the IP of the game.
I think this perhaps blurred the moral lines for them, of which they are now being painfully reminded of in the game press.
Or maybe they are just on the ball and realise that lots of folk are getting bored especially in the wake of loads of "you will love the things to come" comments which appear to refer to the year 2050.

[Update on Massively]
[ QUOTE ]
We've received a comment from Mr. Ivan Sulic with an apology and felt it should be reflected here, "So, to the point then... I am sorry. Cryptic is sorry. This should not have happened. It was inappropriate and it will not happen again. Please understand that we truly did not intend any offense, though. The people involved are very sorry about it, believe me. This has been a big headache when it should have been as simple as, 'Hey, any MMO guild folks want to play Champions?'" It's great to have this cleared up, as nobody at Massively wanted any of this to remain unclear to either ourselves or to you, our readers.

That is a little rude. Getting a PM wouldn't annoy me and I'd still join up, but it is still rather rude!

or the rumours of your Beta invite?
(Laughs) ... only joking dear.
It still makes me laugh what people consider "rude" these days. I think it's audacious, controversial, and just the sort of thing you want to raise your profile before your game is released.
"Rude" would have been going on to the forums and shouting "City of Heroes is a pile of [censored], why don't you play our game instead".
It's really no different to the supermarkets telling us that specific other supermarkets are more expensive than they are. To use the McDonalds analogy above, I'd say it was a bit cheeky to do something like that, but certainly not "rude and unprofessional".

No, it's like Tescos having someone standing inside Sainsburys handing out leaflets telling people how much better Tescos it.
The issue is not Cryptic trying to poach players, it's that they are using message boards owned and paid for by thier competetor in order to do so.
It was also stupid. Previously, most CoX players would have been prepared to give CO a trail, and would have stuck with it had they found it to be a better product than CoX. Now Cryptic have done something that puts them in a box with SOE: there are some people who will now avoid products with Cryptic on the box because they don't aprove of the way they do buisiness.
I really should do something about this signature.

Previously, most CoX players
[/ QUOTE ]
Says you.Cause forums dont really represent majority of players and while a lot of people pretend to be self righteous with "i dont approve how this company does business" comments,in the mmo market it doesnt make much difference. In the end its the product and how a company handles its product aftersales that defines it and makes it successful. This aint a luxury good market we are talking about. Most CoX players will definitely give it a try even the self righteous ones and i bet if they like the game they wont give a damn about the so called "poaching"
SOE has been given a bad name due to the whole SWG situation which was lets face it a design/production/marketing disaster.Even Rubenfield himself admitted to it
[ QUOTE ]
"It was a misread at an organizational level. Design, Marketing, Production, community. You name it. We made huge mistakes. We got too close to the changes. Design took something and made it bigger than it shouldve been. We got swept up in the wave of changes and ran with it. And we [censored] it up. All of us."
[/ QUOTE ]
Thats from his blog you can look it up and its really irrelevant to the current occurance between Cryptic and NC.
The whole thing about Cryptic and the "poaching" is only going to do good to Cryptic stir more interest and the self righteous will keep yelling "Burn".In the end the product will determine the outcome and who cares what happened during beta testing if the end product is great.

That ban on CO forums still stings i see
I think the whole thing seems worse than it might otherwise because of the history between the two companies and the two games. Especially when you take into account that on various news sites, any number of experienced gamers are saying their beta applications for CO are still pending - it does make it seem more like petty trouble-making than honestly trying to pick up some good beta testers.
That said, I doubt a lot of people are going to pick what game to play based on how the makers act towards other game makers. The only relevant point might be that if they're generally going to act like [insert unpleasant plural word here], will they also end up acting like that to their players?
Personally, I already know where I'm staying (this place improved after Emmert left, so why would I go to another game of his?), so it's fairly irrelevant to me, but I do think the whole thing was a bit unnecessary.

I agree with you.Dont get me wrong i do not condone the act i dont consider it professional.Still in the mainstream crowd that doesnt follow closely the business aspect of MMO games this will go by without any notice. And that crowd is the majority to be honest.

I am not so sure and i cant say with certainty but its quite possible to have approached some pretty specific gamers following the approach Blizzard adopted with Everquest.I wouldnt trust majority of news networks beyond the facts mainly because they can be biased for whatever reasons (writers being regulars in some games and what not).

And you think that the CoH player base is the largest source of potential CO players? I would disagree. Sure, if you've got a group that already play a superhero based MMO (and more to the point, currently the ONLY one), and you're releasing a superhero MMO, it's perfectly natural that they are going to be your target audience in the initial stages. What better place than the forums for that game to try and target those people?
Ok, let's say Tescos tried to put a bloke in Sainsburys handing out leaflets saying how much better it was, what would happen? He'd probably get a few leaflets out to people, maybe get a few converts, likely be ushered out by security after 20 minutes and a big news story about how unprofessional Tescos marketing campaign is. There'd be lots of people decrying their actions and saying they should be banned (as people tend to do in situations like this), and I'd imagine lots of people would say "ooh this is terrible I'm n ever going in Tescos again".. but ultimately, it'd all be a lot of hot air. If someone is stupid and bloody minded enough to inconvenience themselves and travel 10 miles out their way to go to a Sainsburys rather than go to the Tescos just up the road, just because of a bit of cheeky marketing then more fool them.
Same goes for people who are saying they'll boycott STO and CO because of this. If that's all it takes you to not play a game, you can't have been that fussed about playing it in the first place.

We live in a society where we are constantly under the watchful gaze of professional complainers who see it as their duty to feel insulted on behalf of others.
People should be thankful that they have so little to complain about.

That sounds pretty solid to me. I'd imagine pretty much every 'City of' subscriber will be trying CO, even If its only on a free trial. Cryptic knows this - NCsoft knows this. If anyone is boycotting CO out of some misplaced sense of loyalty because they think NCsoft values you more than just a subscription, I can tell you are living in cloud-cuckoo land. Harsh but true, this is show business not show friends.
Cryptic was instrumental in 'City of Heroes' it would be odd not to be curious about it. People will end up in one of the four Serious adult-orientated Superhero MMOs incoming that suits their playstyle/Imagination/Roleplay needs. End of in my opinion.

And this is why your applicaton is still pending most likely. They aint looking to let in closed beta people that will use it to decide if they play it or not. They looking feedback and ways to improve things balance em out etc etc.Common practise of any serious developer afaik regarding closed beta part of development.

I stand corrected, they haven't invented words for how unprofessional this is.
Not only do they attempt to poach players from a game where their lead developer screwed up, they don't even say sorry for doing it.
Well, that killed what little desire I had to play CO and STO.
