An 'Outlandish' Suggestion

Right, this time of year always makes me think of panto for some ungodly reason and the fables/stories that came before them.

I have had a few very basic ideas for possible new mission sets/events based on the fairytales of old. Please note these are based on the Hans Christian Andersen/Brothers Grimm etc style rather than the cutesy, no-death-as-it-might-scare-the-parents Disney versions.

Contacts
[u]Mother Goose[u] - to be found in Galaxy City (I considered Croatoa but, well, it limits the starting characters somewhat and I figure this should be a fun, if slightly warped, introduction to the game world (plus doable for other levels).
Something very strange is happening! Our World, the land of stories (please suggest something less lame), is merging with this one. I have a feeling I know who's behind it but I need proof. Will you help me?

So Mother Goose sends you and/or a band of heroes out to solve some problems (in the form of missions, natch) leading to a climactic EB/AV battle which is as it should be .

[u]Captain Bluebeard[u] - to be found on Chum* Island in Mercy Island.
Yarr! So ye be noticin' strange things afoot too, ey? etc etc . I think you get the general idea of a piratey version of Mother Goose.

***

So this brings me on to some ideas for the missions themselves - namely trying to cram as much punnage into each and every single one as is humanly possible. The following are ones I have thought of so far, plus a few fairy stories I couldn't quite drum anything up for:

Cinderfella - a Hellion.
Poor, downtrodden Cinderfella was hoping to go to the rave and meet a beautiful, if morally objectionable, princess and live happily ever after. However, the Wicked Bone Daddy (yes I know Bone Daddies are Skulls, but Damned didn't quite fit!) and his ugly Blood Brothers have forced him to stay at home and keep the oil-in-a-trash-can fire burning.
So, he needs rescuing and, not only that, but he needs transport, some new duds and a posse to escort him there.
Cue first mission - rescue Cinderfella.
Cue second mission - find a 'coach'
Cue third mission - find some fancy clothes
Cue fourth mission - assemble a posse.
Fifth mission - re-rescue Cinderfella and make sure he survives to get to the rave.

Lady Grey and the Seven Rikti Traditionalists
I figured the title sums this one up - however, I think this is probably only a single (albeit big mish) to go rescue LG and her Rikti pals from someone. I have no idea who the big bad is in this case.

Sleepin' Booty
Definitely a pirate-themed mission! The 'Booty' is a legendary pirate treasure. I was thinking of a Ghost Pirate mission or set of missions but with little nods to Peter Pan. Perhaps Barracuda could make an appearance dressed as Tiger Lily? I have no idea.

Jack-in-Irons versus The Beanstalk
No, this is not an obscure reference to the JiI vs Eochai deathmatches that occur frequently in Croatoa. I did have an idea for a special instance involving a giant beanstalk that is created in a map by 'planting' a magic bean. The player/team then climbs it to get to the final part of the map.

So we have the straggler fairy tales (and, I hope, other people will suggest more):

Red Riding Hood
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Rapunzel
Rumpelstiltzkin
The Little Mermaid

***

My final suggestion is that this would be an excellent time to introduce the Pirate Mastermind! And also, quite possibly, an Underwater mission set.

The ideas above are totally open to further suggestions, filling them out and the like. So please do add things. I'd rather this were an organic thread than a 'I don't get it - /unsigned' or 'Wow, I like it - /signed' one.

Red Riding Hood

Well, these days, this would traditionally be a high-level mission where a group of friendly Werewolves have asked for help from Portal Corps to halt the depredations of the Red Rider in the Hood, who is obviously a seven foot chick in thigh boots carrying a steaming great "Axe of Werewolf Slaying."

Twisted Fairy Tales have a lot to answer for.

---

That said, I do have this urge for a hip-hop mission of some sort where you're asked to escourt young Red on her ride through da Hood. But that may be too corny.

---

Oh! Oh!

The Little Mermaid

becomes The Little Corralax

Evil/Mad scientists have transformed a Corralax into a human woman, and she needs you to gather the equipment to turn her back, assemble it, spring her from her spurned lover's prison, and zap her back into being a scaly, horrible mess.

OR...

A corralax engages a group of villains to build a machine which will transform her into a human, so she can go spy on the land dwellers.

I actually really like this idea.

Aladdin immediately springs to mind.

The "liberation" of a lamp type object from a cave mission, the rescuing of a princess akin to the Spelunker mission. The defeating of an evil grand Vizier (Death Mage COT).

You could even have a Nerva Spectral Demon Lord posing as the genie.

I know you said you didnt want to see this but as an idea definitely /signed!

----

Another idea - lets be fair the best villains from fairy tales are actually villainesses (if thats a word) - Queue the Carnival of Shadows. Illusionists and Master Illusionists would make perfect wicked witches and evil stepmothers and the like.

I'll shut up now. Supposed to be working

Life is one big practical joke that we as the human race have yet to see the punchline to. Once you work that out the rest is easy.

Oooh ooh how about the Wizard of (Arachn)Oz?

Featuring Black Scorpion as the Tin Man, Mako as the cowardly Shark and Ghost Widow as the scarecrow....Surely it'd be lovely with flying Rikti monkeys and the Recluse with big butterfly wings...I've not thought this through, my mind sidetracked at flying monkeys....

Oh and those other ideas were awesome too.

Wouldnt Scirocco make a better scarecrow and GW could be the fairy or something?

Just a thought

In the Arachn'Oz' stories, you'd only ever be able to follow the Yellow Line to get around ;o)

The one problem with that is that I have my sneaking suspicions that I won't be able to, and I just know that I won't be able to get a custom designed Red Riding Hood model built and inserted into the game.

There's a Todd Macfarlane comic (I think) featuring mad, psycho, werewolf slaying Red, and there was also my first ever LARP Campaign event in which various fairy tale creatures were coming to life. Red was out slaying a friendly pack of werewolves. I missed her, but it was apparently quite an outfit.

And speaking of that event... Miss Muffet

Now, at that event, Miss Muffet was a victim of the spider. She was strung up on a web in the spider's lair (the girl was physically attached to a wall a couple of feet off the ground) having had spider eggs laid in her belly, which then proceeded to hatch (complete with spewing out fake entrails). The (fully physrepped, mobile and articulated) spider was the size of a small car, immune to magic, spat paralysing poison... you get the picture. We sent in the super-heavies and they eventually minced it.

So, how about having to save Miss Muffet from the lab where Arachnos have taken her to be transformed into a Tarantula Mistress (or similar). Run the mission against the clock. Get through the guards fast enough, and you get to escourt her out again. Do it too slow and you get to face off against Killer Muffet, the Tarantual Mistress EB (or something).

On no I didn't!

Well, if they allow us to make important NPCs with some version of the costume creator, then people might be able to get pretty close

No... we're talking non-standard costume parts here. I mean, a corset in blood red is a must.

Gives a geat insight into what you're trying ot achieve I think

Nice idea tho

Apart from Ravenswing's Miss Muffet LARP description putting me off the thought of sweeping a duster round the shed, the Tarantula Mistress idea is very coolio.

Also, on the notion of Red, The Company of Wolves appeals to me. As does Into The Woods.

AFAIK the Mission Architect was put back an issue because they wanted us to be able to make our NPC bosses and the like. I've tried some variations of Red out on the cossie creator(!) and an all-Patent Leather bodysuit, trenchcoat, hood, padded gloves (fingerless) and eerie grin face is my favourite design. I also tried Mother Goose, but sadly nothing looks good. We needs more 'old' faces for male, female and huge! And big skirts with bustles.

Well, I for one will be attemtping Cinderfella when the MA comes out. Don't expect immediate release though - I have a horrible feeling I will become obsessed and spend months on creating before actually releasing anything onto the unsuspecting public.

Doesn't quite cut it, but that would probably be acceptable for Red. I was thinking more like a Carnie corset.

I spent some time at work thinking about this and came up with some ideas, I'll note what I can pull off the top of my head down.

Hero Contact - Mother Goose

Initial contact -

Hello young heroes, I am Mother Goose, overseer of fairy tales. Unbeknownst to most human's, Fairy Tales hold great power, and if one were to corrupt the tales, well, the results would be terrible.

But there are those who wish this upon us, the Wicked Witch has escaped her prison of stories and took with her one of my enchanted quills, giving her the power to rewrite Fairy Tales so that the heroes lose or become corrupted.

This cannot be allowed, we must change back the tales to their correct states or destroy the corrupted tales, if Fairy Tales become corrupted, then so will the hearts of children.

You must offer assistance Heroname you must.

[u]Mission one[u] - Little Miss Muffet

The witch has used the quill to rewrite Fairy Tales into this world, her powers remain weak as she cannot change the originals, but this does not make her less dangerous.

She has located a young psionic heroine and written her into the story of Miss Muffet, however in her version she becomes a spider herself, an Arachnos Tarantula Mistress to be precise, you must rescue her from this fate. If you cannot then you must destroy Miss Muffet so I may rewrite the story again.

Time Limit - 20.00
Escort Miss Muffet out.
If you fail to reach Miss Muffet before the time limit then you must face a Tarantula Mistress EB.

Ect. ect. Culminates in a battle against the Wicked Witch for the quill.

Villain Side Contact - Wicked Witch

Fairy Tales are pathetic aren't they, good wins, evil is destroyed or redeemed, but not for long little one.

With this quill I acquired from Mother Goose, I can begin rewriting the Fairy Tales so that the villains can win for a change. But Mother Goose is working against me, so that's where you come in.

Help me rewrite the Fairy Tales and I'll reward you beyond your wildest dreams villainname, it's time for us to win for a change wouldn't you say.

[u]Mission One[u] - Miss Muffet

I've managed to locate our first victim and written her into the story of Miss Muffet, only in our new version she becomes a spider herself, a Tarantula Mistress to be precise.

However Longbow arrived before we could complete the procedure, they are attempting to reverse it but we can't allow that. Go to the Arachnos base and reactivate the transformation, if they reverse it then defeat Miss Muffet so we can begin anew.

Time Limit - 20.00
Defeat all - If time limit ends then you have to face Miss Muffet Psy/Psy blaster EB.

ect. ect. ending in a battle against Mother Goose for control of the stories.

I really hope I14 fulfills its true potential and allows us to make these ideas. I think they're great. For my part I was thinking of a Love Story based on Beauty and the Beast where a young heroin has been kidnapped by Captain Mako and (shock horror) actually falls in love with him! Queue several missions of rescues, EB fights and even teaming with Mako himself to get her back (which will be extremely novel for a hero but not unheard of - after all they get to team with Arbiter Sands).

Dont know whether she will die at the end - most tragic love stories do but fairy stories they live happily ever after.... oh the possibilities!
