NaNoWriMo
Whenever this thing starts up, I never feel like writing. And, sadly, writing to schedules is the main reason I don't try to become a commercial writer and get out of this boring computer business.

Basically during November write a 50,000 word novel, you can do all your planning for it now but you can't write the first word of it before 12.01am on the 1st of November.
It's great fun and quite a few people on the boards do it, this will be my first time doing it properly, I was doing it last year but life got in the way.
Cool. Ive been learning so much in the last few months and this is yet another thing I didnt know about. Their web site seems all over the place at the moment, but Ive added it to my home pages so Ill keep checking on it, and Ive done some searching and read up on it in the last hour.
When you say,
few people on the boards do it
do you mean here, the US boards (where I can never find any fan fiction, just videos, videos, videos [sic]) or somewhere else? (Sorry, just being stupid.)
Anyway, this appears to be an excellent challenge and could well be the final straw to push me in to sleeplessness that I need (I never do any work without a really tight deadline ). If I can do the planning before 1st November (and can come up with a good plot
) thatll mean 3,500 words each day to have it done by the middle of the month. (Itll have to fit around the one CoH short story per month Ive got planned, but Im already ahead of the game with that. Oh, doesnt 3,500 words per day sound so easy.
)
I have some ideas. Ill ruminate on it for the next few days, but I think Ive already sold myself on it - bits of me are just playing catch up.

Morgana and Stasis have written stories for the previous 2 that I know of. I vaguely attempted but couldn't be bothered.

I've never written a CoH related story for it, though. If I'm not too busy with the move this year, I might try it - although knowing me, it'll end up as a generic superhero story, featuring my characters, rather than a CoH lore specific tale.
After a while, writing 50,000 words isn't much of a task - it's the editing that hurts.
I tried in 2006, but didn't complete it. Didn't try last year, and just don't have the time this year...

Oh, so true.
I think Ill be doing something CoH related. I went to sleep on it last night and now have an interesting idea. I did a bit of research this morning and Ill see if I can plot something out over the weekend.
Ill mention more later if it seems like a goer.
I think, somehow, starting a new job in October, and then trying to write a novella in November just isn't going to work. So I'll be skipping it again this year.
I think I could probably come up with something based around Jason Caine (Indiana Jones would eat his heart out, I'm sure) or Nitoichi (who seems to be my current favourite), but I can't see me having the time or degree of concentration.

Yes, this will be my third NanoWriMo year. First year was meticulously planned but fell apart at around 26k. Second year was a silly story based on dozens of dares, but which did reach the magical 50k. This year I plan to try and write something more sensible, but first I have to narrow down my options- I've got seven ideas (one of which is CoX based) and can't decide which to use!

Altoholic with too many characters to count now I have all these shiny servers...
Unfortunatly my story this year will not be CoH based, I was going to do one but I had another idea I think I can work better around the 50,000 word minimum.
No No No NO!!!
I refuse to do this again!
I have attempted to do this 3 times now and I failed miserably and what I wrote was pathetic drivel.
I refuse to put myself through it again
We built this city on Rock and Roll!

I only hit the 50k last year through a cunning tactic of planning to write nonsense; thus it didn't really matter that what I was writing was unreadably silly, it was just a matter of putting words down. With that successful 50k behind me, I now know that I can write that number of words, so I'm looking to improve it by writing that number of words, but less daft.
Also helps that I've booked the first week off work, so I have nine full days in which to be A Writer.

I had a crack last year, but this is my Masters year at uni, so I don't expect to have time. Last year I got to somewhere round 6k words. For me that was loads, especially considering I was immensely proud of the high-quality work I'd written. If I ever have time, I'll continue with it. It isn't CoH-orientated, though. Once we hit November, I'll up what I did last year, just in case I do get a break in the work schedule.
Incidentally, my NaNoWriMo profile will be here. I've chucked the first couple of chapters from last year in as my Bio, just for kicks.
DON'T eat muffins while I'm developing you.
Pants! Turkey Magnates! A man in a box! Rogue AI! Come one, come all, to arc ID 10107 - It's 'Not as long as some other arcs'!
I tried it twice, but never got to the 50k. I ended up with two t-shirts though So now that I have quite a few things I think I can write about I'm going to try it again this year. Hopefully finally getting to the 50k
Well, after going from not knowing anything about NaNo last week, to reading BlueDarkys post, going to a NaNo meeting at a local pub on Saturday and then coming up with a plot, heres the blurb for my story (more to follow later if planning goes well):
The Wandering Year
Lucy Flanagan is down on her luck. An officer in the Paragon Police Department (PPD), the promotion that should have been hers has gone to a younger officer who had caught the eye of the Chief. Lucy has never had that big break others seem to get, that is until now.
A ritualised murder in Kings Row, one of the more gang ridden and deprived districts in the city, is a reasonably common occurrence. Everyone else in the department has a more interesting super powered crime to investigate and so the case has landed on Lucys desk.
Michael Hermes Aspen is a local radio DJ who's bored with his job. What he's more interested in is the crime fighting he does in the evenings under the superhero name Pentangle. He's started to hear rumours of a new villain in Paragon City who has been drawing people away from the others gangs and the last thing the city needs is another villain group.
What both Lucy and Michael dont know is that they might be the only people who can stop a villain who could threaten the stability of power in the city.
---
The Wandering Year is a detective story set in the world of City of Heroes. Any relation to PCs is purely coincidental. Title and plot may change drastically between now and 1st November. The fifty thousand word target may or may not be hit. Leigh may be found writing, crying, or sleeping (maybe even all three) on a park bench, on a train or by the sea.
Yup...I will...this year will be my second attempt. I came to 28,000 words last year but as I started a new job in the same month I couldn't be bothered to finish it. Shame though...I liked the story.
I already have an idea in mind about what to write too. Nothing CoH though.

I'm not good at giving advice, can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?
@Lyrik
If anyone is interested, Ive now done the outline plot for my NaNo attempt and have started blogging about it. [linky]
If all goes well Ill be publishing chapters as they happen (or a few days later at any rate) so if you get short of something to read youll have a CoH story nearly every day of the month. Oh, and Im going to be so dead by the end. XD
I have the characters already lined out and I will give myself two extra challenges that month Click
It won't be a CoH story...but the characters are super...or...I suppose you could call them enhanced.
I really can't wait till it starts

I am exceptionally nervous,
I've been an aspiring writer for years, but never really managed to stick with anything original or publishable.
So I've promised myself that if I can hit the 50,000 word target, I'll do everything I can to get my NaNoWriMo story published.
So big pressure here.
I have now decided on my main plot, and on two "back-up" plots in case I run into insurmountable difficulties with the first one. None of them are CoH related, though.
If anybody wants to look me up on the NaNoWriMo site, I'm morganafiolett there (surprisingly enough...)

Not doing bad, 1805 already
I'm mad tired though, shouldn't have stayed up so late for it

Just over a month until it starts, this is the perfect time to begin planning your NaNoWriMo project and getting ready for the month of November. If you don't know what I'm on about check it out here.
So who's entering this year and are you entering with a CoH story?
