X-treme diplomacy

Due to a conversation held in PD last night, I've been left wondering exactly how Arachnos manages it. They're quite obviously running a military, if not a totalitarian dictatorship, and have instigated countless acts of agression at the US (Paragon City in particular), yet they're never directly questioned or threatened with even some sort of sanction. I'm well aware that bad things can happen when people just aren't interested in dealing with the horrible stuff that goes on, but there's evidently a will to do something as evidenced by the fact that one of the US's top spy duos* is sent in to try and break down operations .

So, why doesn't anything happen? What's the rationale behind it? Is it because the Rikti war's on, so there's just not the resources to try and take action? Is it that Arachnos is just too good and even the UN would have trouble fighting them? Or is it just that this is a comic book world and we need a nice lot of morally unambigous fellows to bash around?

Because knowing they're up to something and proving it are two different things entirely - a faction with as much infighting as Arachnos can greatly rely on "THEY ARE TEH ROGUES" a fair bit.

Plus, almost every nation has used the Rogue Isles to perform their own little dirty operations and secrets. If sanctions started being put in place, Recluse would have one hell of a blackmail backlog to use against his opponents.

Well theres a number of things to consider:

For starters in terms of mineral wealth its safe to say that the isles may be self sufficient, I also highly doubt that their weapons are made in another country, like Syra said they can rely on the rogues excuse and yes resources can prove problematic.

Also lets not forget that Longbow have frequently invaded the isles and many independant heroes have crossed the border to commit criminal acts ("heroic" deeds) including such names as the illustrious Statesman.

but what I was pointing out with the mineral wealth and manufacturing thing is that I imagine the isles are self-sufficient in that regard and can trade with non-UN States with ease (weapons for resources). An economic sanction in other words would not be very effective.

~EDIT~

Also one extra point that needs to be raised. Assuming Arachnos is not a UN member state (they may have been able to slide in during the Rikti war? But its not likely), there is a good chance they are on the list of UN enemy states.

I suspect that this has something to do with it.

Arachnos has that in its backstory. It can weedle, bribe or smash its way out of most situations. Seeing as the Heroes and Villains sepnd most of the time fighting either the Rikti or deadlocked with each other, its not too surprising that Arachnos is still there. Even with the infighting, you can bet that they'd unite against something like an invasion, and terminate with extreme prejudice :P

Also, I'd like to add that Arachnos regularly hires supervillains for work. This completely shifts blame and would be very difficult to trace back to Arachnos. I'm sure they use that to their advantage all the time. Especially with more delicate situations.

When you get down to it.

Arachnos is an equally valid government in comparison to the US.

Likewise it suffers from constant terrorist attacks from the USA.

if word got out the USA would be messed up from it, basically no country would trust the USA not to send in Metahuman terrorist forces if they disagreed with it.

I imagine word has got out which is why there would be the massive anti-arachnos disinformation campaign.

Last I checked, Arachnos secured it's rule over the Rogue Isles by simply levelling two cities (What was present on the islands before St. Martial and Grandville), and of course, killing or "subduing" any resista-

Oh wait.

Yep legitimate because they are the power in the isles.
