The Amber Banshee and her father seemed to be safe, for the time being. The Portent turned and began to thread his way through the battle toward the pod, relying on his stealth suit to keep him hidden from the hordes of clones. No doubt some of the copied heroes possessed superhuman senses that might pierce his concealment, but it was a risk that had to be taken.

He considered possible options. The "meteor" was clearly alive, so destroying it was out of the question; besides, it had already withstood re-entry and impact with the earth at terminal velocity. It would take a vast amount of force to so much as damage it, if that was even possible. But it needed to be contained...

He ducked behind cover and re-opened his broadcast frequency. "Militia. We need to move this object to a safer location as quickly as possible. Options."

“Can we send it back out into space?” replied Saffron to Portent’s query. “Actually, scratch that, I don’t like the thought of it landing somewhere else and having the natives blame us. A forcefield maybe? I dunno.”

A second voice chimed in, that of Saff’s father. “What about overpowering it? Putting a few thousand volts through its system? Or maybe irradiating it? Kill off whatever’s in there by radiation? It would have to be open to our environment to be able to vent the gas.”

Saffron didn’t respond. She’d already seen another bunch of heroes tackle her clones so she’d turned to try and help out a police officer who seemed to be facing down a cloned Kheldian. The thing looked like Luna’s ‘dwarf’ form as she called it but she could see the telltale orange glow in its forehead. A few notes sung by her at its frequency had got its attention but what she was going to do next she hadn’t considered. “Aw crud,” she exclaimed as the thing turned its attention towards her.

Fifty feet away, Brian sat on the sidewalk, watching the battle. He felt guilty for not being able to help, for leaving his daughter to do the fighting. It wasn’t right, he thought, to leave her vulnerable. He looked down at his hands, hands which still bore the mutation inflicted upon him by the Devoured Earth. He’d experimented since his restoration, seeing what that accursed virus’ legacy was. He’d blunted several knives trying to cut his skin and he’d proved that he could lift a car without straining. But could he live up to what these heroes faced every day? Maybe it was time to find out.

The meteor needed destroying. But although a few heroes were closing in on it, most of them were still concerned with battling their own clones. That he could help with. He stood up, rising to his full height of nine foot two and started to walk slowly into the battlefield.

Annie flew straight up leaving the Shivan with the lamp-post. She change direction and flew toward the meteor. She had heard Amber Banshee's earlier broadcast but was a little too occupied to respond.

"Cut them off at the source." She said to herself. As she approached the meteor she raised a gale force wind to clear the fog and get a good look at the meteor.

Nightseye looked down and saw the clone of Fanservice melt away into the green ooze it was obviously made off.

Now her attention shifted to the other clones emerging from the centre of the meteor. But now that the weak spot was known it would be a lot easier to take these down.

She stormed down towards an upcoming fresh clone of Amber and dodge the first sonic blast... ferociously she struck the orange glow. A blow that would have been hard enough to take the real Amber's head clean off. Now that it was confirmed these to be fakes not really alive there was no reason to pull punches.

She looked to Fanservice who was still standing next to her melting clone while thinking of the Melitia announcements. "He.. I don't know you're name yet... but I don't think we can help much with containment or destruction of a meteor that size. Let's make the streets clear!"

Richard stood, stunned by the influx of clones around him. Too many for him to effectively sort friend from foe, even with the glow coming from the heads of the clones.

"You have bigger fish to try, Huntington. Like that rock."

He watched the other heroes around him, some battling frantically, others darting this way and that, offering aid wherever they could, but only a couple paying close attention to the cooling rock that had started all this.

Inside, he thought. I need to get inside it. Oh, hellfire. This is going to be horrible to see.

He half-closed his eyes and shifted himself out of phase with reality, dropping his awareness into another world. A world of terror and pain and anguish that he thought of his 'Shadow World', when he was feeling nice. The rest of the time he gave it a much simpler name. Hell.

When his eyes opened, he saw the familiar muted colours of the shadow of reality that was his own personal hellscape. Bodies littered the ground, dozens of them, people he knew, people he'd fought beside, some strangers, seen only on news broadcasts, but people he liked to think of as being 'on the team'.

And standing over them, silent, victorious, were hundreds of the clones, ignoring him, simply looking at the dead with no feeling, no passion, no hatred.

His anger boiled within him. The one emotion that truly tied him to being human. Here, he could wreak his revenge. Here he could harm with impunity. Here he was the destroyer, the creator, the seed of life and death, and he was angry.

The blast that erupted from him ripped through the phantom clones, tore the ground, and sent a gout of dust hundreds of feet into the air.

"It's just a shame that nothing I do here will affect the real world." As he stood in the crater he left, his gaze locked on the meteorite. "Right, let's see what's inside you, shall we?"

Out of phase with reality, out of step with time and space, he launched himself into the air, preparing to slip inside the rock and see what he could learn... before he had to return to the 'real world'.

The blows continued to land. Union felt a hot liquid filling his mouth. He spat it out on the ground. Blood. He hadn't seen his own blood in years. These clones were capable of hurting him. He dreaded to think what they would do to others. A fist collided with the back of his skull. His head snapped forward, catapulting yet more blood from his mouth.

Then a strange sensation passed over him. A feeling of lightness, his body didn't feel so heavy anymore. The punches stopped. He looked up to see Annie. She was manipulating the gravity around him and the clones. The clones were floating away from him. He let out a sigh of relief. As he inhaled, the air he breathed was rich in oxygen. His head began to clear and his mind regained focus. He gave Annie a brief but reassuring smile.

The clones had now counteracted the gravity distortion by hovering, but Union now had breathing space and room to maneuver. With one swift motion Union rose to his feet and delivered an almighty uppercut to the nearest clone. The impact sent the clone launching into the air. The gravity field dissipated and the second and third clones went in for the kill, but Union put his foot down, literally. An earth shaking foot stomp sent out a localised shockwave that knocked the clones off their feet.

He spotted the fourth clone being hit by a barrage of energy blasts. The blasts were coming from a hulking great robot. The assault was slowing the clone down. So long as the robot didn't let the clone get within melee range, he would be ok.

Union turned his attention to the noise of rushing air coming from above. It was the first clone and it was coming in fast. Union leapt into the sky. He was going to meet this clone head on. Once more he forced his power into his flight and his speed increased. The clone was coming at him like a missile. The two got closer and closer. Union had an idea. He reared his fist back, focusing his eyes on the orange glow on his opponents forehead. The two were within feet of eachother. Union drove his fist forward. The impact was colossal, magnified by fist and target colliding at frightening speed. The clone span in the air. Union had to know for sure, he flew toward the spinning clone and grabbed it, ready to hit it again. He watched as the orange glow as it flickered and faultered. It slowly faded until it was extinguished. Union let go. The clones body began to disintegrate as it fell to earth, dissolving into a viscous slime.

He did it. They can be defeated. One down, three more to go. He glared down at the other two clones. He was bound an determined to put an end to these abominations. He inhaled deeply and dived.

The slight figure of Helena Hammond, swathed in a deep purple bodysuit, arrived on the scene. She took in the sights before her:
Cloned heroes and civilians battling their counterparts. The strange orange glow on the forehead of each clone intrigued Helena: Some sort of psychic signal?. Well, surely they had to be controlled by something?

She had heard the reports of the meteor/plant thing and was glad she had not been struck by the 'lightning'. For now, at least, the clones didn't seem to be displaying any metahuman characteristics and Helena would not have wished her own powers on anyone.

Helena followed the column of gas upwards. What purpose does that serve I wonder?

She was a safe distance away from the crowd of capes and civilians and it gave her time to consider what she might try to do to help in some way. First of all would be to determine exactly how many 'entities' were here. That might give her a clue as to where the source of the clones' animation was coming from.

Helena adopted what she liked to call the 'Public Relations Psychic Pose' - she rested her outsretched fingers on her temples and started to scan the area for signs of 'real' life.

Waving at Nightseye, Fanservice knew there's never a bad time for an introduction.

"Hi! I'm Fanservice"

Clotheslining a superspeeder as it ran past, the poor clone burst into flame and tumbled down the street a sniper shot putting it out of action.

Surveying the fight, Fans gestured for Nightseye to follow.

"Come on! Plenty left for us. Want to at least get some big names before this is over!"

Still not sure what he was doing, Brian waded into the green mist, a clone approaching him. It blasted at him with some sort of force beam but Brian just shrugged it off, watching with interest as it impacted on him. Where it hit flesh, he saw it momentarily become like cracked stone before returning back to human skin. The clone tried again, putting more power into its blast to try and knock him off his feet. Brian kept on walking. He could feel a power running through him, something he had been aware of when he had been one of the Devoured. But back then it had been twisted, stolen, perverted in some way. This energy was fresh, clean, holy. It compelled him, fortifying him, connecting him. He like it.

Coming close to the clone, he began to run forward, watching as the emotionless clone seemed to almost panic, firing off blast after blast at him. Gaining speed, charging, Brian roared in defiance before slamming his fist into the clone’s forehead. The head of the clone exploded as if it had been hit by a freight train, the orange glow dying immediately. He looked around but couldn’t see much, the green mist still obscuring the battlefield. From his left he saw one hero pinned down against three clones of himself. He braced himself and prepared to enter the fray.

Further down the field, the curtain obscuring the meteor was momentarily lifted by a huge gust of wind that pushed the green gas away. In front of the space rock stood a man, facing the car sized object. The rock, having cooled somewhat was craggy and pocked with holes as something that had endured space travel would be expected to be. But it had a strange red hue to it and a large crack that ran down its centre from which the tentacle had first emerged. Inside the crack it was possible to see a blackened core, moist with various purple lights that seemed to dance around its surface. From the bottom of the rock, embedded as it was in its crater, three sphincter like protruberances were still busily pumping out the green gas, only momentarily abated by the wind. Sensing a presence, there came a hiss from inside the crack as the long tentacle device emerged once more, rising up to probe the one who dared step this close.

Helena concentrated just enough to pick up the vaguest sense of how many living things here were present. Unfortunately the place in her mind lit up like Christmas.

Oh great! So, these clone things are living.

The gigantic guy pounded one of the clones and the orange glow faded. Helena detected, too briefly, a loss of a life force. Could it be that the assembled heroes might have to kill these things?

Helena came out of her trance and shivered at the thought. Well, they're attacking so they can't be too friendly. Unless of course they're scared witless.

Fear was something Helena could use with confidence. She abhorred that her true psychic power fed off the fears of others and she was never comfortable with trying it out on alien lifeforms ever since her experiences in the First Rikti War. I really hope they're not hiveminds - all that chattering drives me nuts.

The clones were acting in a peculiarly panicky way so Helena braced herself and picked one of the things that hadn't quite made it into the thick of the fight. This time she simply clasped her hands together, as if in short prayer, and let her mind focus to a sharp point. Her eyes flashed purple as she aimed for the orange glow on the clone's forehead. There was certainly a lot of fear mingled in with an intense burning hatred: so hot was the emotion that Helena reeled backwards and toppled to the ground. Being a short woman helped the fall but there was hardly any meat on her bones which made the impact on the hard concrete road more painful.

"Y'ouch!" was her rather embarrassing cry, followed by a sickening burning in her head as all that hot anger poured through her mind and out to the rest of her body.

Oh dear. They're hostile. And we're going to have to kill them.

Annie saw the tentacle and with a beat of her wings she rose several feet away from it.

"Think logically Annie." She scolded herself for not paying more attention at school. "We know it came from outer-space. The rock shell was probably for protection and there is no gravity in space...." Her face lit up with what she hoped would be a bright idea.

Taking into account the man stood quite close to the meteor, Annie focused her power almost to a half metre square. Aiming for the centre of the meteor she increased the gravity. With each moment of concentration she increased the gravity further. Hoping the pressure would crush the thing. Sweat started to bead on her forehead with the effort.

Union landed with an almighty thud. The impact sent a gust of wind which blew some of the fog clear. He could see a little more clearly now. Two of his clones were heading straight for him, while the third was being occupied by the robot VGX-3. The robot certainly looked fortified, but Union wasn't sure if even it could withstand a being with a punch capable of breaking a building in half. He hoped so.

He returned his attention to the oncoming pair of Union clones. He'd need to hit their weak spots with the force of nothing less than a cruise missile. Even for Union this was a tall order. But he did it once and could do it again. He would have to try to repeat what he did with the last one.

The clones came at him once more. A smirk crawled across Unions face as he darted forward. He knocked both clones off their feet with with a brutal double clothesline. He swiftly turned and attempted deliver another massive footstomp right on the face of the nearest clone, but the clone rolled out of harms way just in time. Union was caught off guard by a kick to the midsection from the second clone. Union retaliated with an elbow to the jaw. He immediately turned to the first clone, gripped its head tight and slammed his own into it. The headbutt caused the glow to flicker briefly, but not extinguish it. The clone staggered, seemlingly dazed. This gave Union time to turn and deliver a series of titanic blows to the face of the second clone. He saw a chance. He quickly stooped and scooped the clones legs out from under it. He maintained a tight grip as he began to swing the clone round and round. The first clone, now recovered from the headbutt, moved in. Union swung the second clone round like a baseball bat and whacked the first so hard it sent it hurtling deeper into the mist. Then Union began to spin the clone as an Olympic hammer thrower might. Union was gathering momentum at an incredible rate. He let go, sending the clone rocketing skyward. He waited until the clone had reached the zenith of its climb. He watched it regain its composure and dive back down. Union launched himself to meet it.

Bill's brain hoped it had figured the distances right , and told Bill's Body to flip , twisting in mid air the pliant zombie body flipped head over feet to do a 180 and now use the rocket boot thrust as braking to come to what turned out to be 4 feet from the smashed ground surface , some 30 feet from the space rock ....

....cutting rocket power Bill landed as the form of Brian emerged from the cloud , Bill note the lack of clone -glow and relaxed by 3% , only to take that back with 23% interest as the long tentacle device arose once more from the space rock....

still holding to Plan C Bill trusted that the Tentacle would deal with Brian first , so he kicked in a burst of running and charged at the three sphincter like protuberances , aiming to cut them at their root and stop the gas flow .....

With the sudden change of target from him to Annie, Steve made a quick amble towards the Meteor, looking down the through the crack to the purple core below...lookin to the man that had attacked him from mistake for a moment.

Steve decided it was now time to test, from his eyes lanced beams of radiation aimed straight at the core. He jumped down onto the Meteor, his green goo hissed and bubbled but the Shivan was animated by radiation from other out of space meteorites, perhaps this was part of the mass that what he was once part of...a part of Shiva...

Steve decided that perhaps hitting the thing may or may not work but it was worth a try, if he was badly injured he could teleport away and spend a few hours in Bloody Bay feeding off the radiation of the fallen meteors.

Firearm weaved through the air like a rusty spectre, raining bolts of fire and repulsor beams at the glowing orange balls visible through the fog. he couldn't make much out through the gloom, but he could tell that something was happening - that some of the tell-tale orange glowies were starting to cluster and move toward a single point. Flying closer, Frank saw that they were heading toward a young heroine he didn't recognise.

Uttering a mumbled prayer to the gods of temperamental rocket boots, Frank boosted toward her, hurling fiery bombs and beams into the congregating clones.

Nighteye jumped on a winged gravity wielding clone. The clone turned around and in a small panic action started to use her gravity powers on Nightseye.

"Aww.. now that is a big mistake sister.", she said... Her increased mass was slowing her down but also weigh heavy on the flying clone. She used the momentum gained to litterly crash on the clones head.

The body turned to a mushy green goo almost instantly.

"Fanservice! They are shifting attention... Shooting what looks like the original of the clone I just took out. It must be something important..."

With that said she grabbed a clone of Amber from behind, hitting her at the throat so she couldn't use any sonics. Following up with a blunt hit on her head taking the clone out instantly.

"Lets give her room to do whatever she is doing..."

Annie was concentrating so hard on the gravity field surrounding the centre of the meteor, she didn't notice the change of direction the clones had made.

Annie cried out as some sort of blast hit her back. Followed by another hit on the shoulder. With her focus gone the gravity field dissipated.

Annie looked around, her eyes widening with fear as she saw all of the clones making their way toward her. Before she had a chance to move she was struck by what looked like a blast of kheldian energy. The force of the blow flipped Annie in the air like a doll.

Injured and exhausted, Annie's wings were useless as she plummeted to the ground.

High above, the Union clone was only feet away from Union when it began to change direction. However, Union had factored for this, he had suspected the clone might become aware of his tactic and try to counter it. He caught the clones leg as it tried to move away. He used the momentum to swing clone around and hurled it towards the ground. He chased the clone as it fell, gravity accelerating their fall. The clone crashed to the ground, the impact enough to clear a patch of the fog away. Union increased his speed at the last second. Moments after the collision, Union collided with the clone. His impact was even greater. A large cloud of dust burst from the impact. The dust began to clear, Union emerged from the small crater he and his clone had created. He flicked something from his hand, a green goo. Two down.

Union looked around for the remaining clones. He saw the robot VGX-3 firing in the direction of the crashed alien pod. Union followed the trajectory of the robots shots and saw his clone heading deeper into the mist. Other clones were following suit. They all seemed to to be heading towards the pod. Whatever was going on, it was happening there.

Union rushed deeper into the murk. When arrived at the epicenter, he found several heroes gathered round the pod. Steve the Shivan stood astride the alien meteor, firing intense blasts of radiation at its core. Bill appeared to be gunning for the strange sphincter like protuberances that were pumping out this noxious murk. Union also saw another, a giant of a man, Brian, heading towards the pod. Then Union spotted the angelic Annie collapsed on the ground. He rushed to her side. Gently, he cradled her head in his hand.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

It was at that moment he saw that the bulbous tenticle had re-emerged from the pod.

The tentacle emerged, ‘seeing’ the heroes as they surrounded the crater. The clones were returning, drawing closer, bombarding the heroes with whatever they could whilst taking care not to hit the meteor itself. The flower on the end of the tentacle bloomed again, this time spreading its ‘petals’ wide. A concentrated burst of energy exploded from the flower, a static field of purple energy specifically targeted towards people’s minds. The psychic burst sent shockwaves of power through the collected hero’s brains, enough to render the mightiest hero powerless.

The clones were closer now, moving towards those who seemed to have resisted the psychic attack. Targeting those who were not bend double in agony from the constant waves of energy, they sought out those who did not succumb.

Steve had one major advantage when it came to Psionic attack, he was undead, not much of a mind to read.

He looked around at all the clones...there was only one choice...he was going to regret this but he the creature had forced his hand.

He brought back a fist and plunged it through the crack in the meteor, his morphous gelatine like-body meant his arm was able to worm it's way through the crack.

Steve looked up at the meteor, "MRGURR!" and then he begun pulsing radiation into the creature.

If this didn't work...well...he was going to be in a lot of trouble.

.. the energy blades vanished at a switches flick ,and the hilt swapped out, ..Bill now wielding a Thorn magic blade , acquired from a errhm sleeping CoT goon slashed into the three gas pumping sphincters...

Bolts , in a range of types , colours , and energies slammed into Bill , as the clones turned upon him ..

“ok “ thinks the Bill Brain , “go for broke time “ and the zombie frame kicks in up to full strength ((build up )) to rend the sphincters , and the zombie flesh direct all efforts to keeping the frame in one piece ((reconstruction )) ...and the magic blade sped deep deep into the root mass of the sphincters ....

The pain was searing. Unions mind screamed in agony. It felt like a thousand white hot needles penetrating his skull. It throbbed and stung and all things in between. All his mind knew what to do was hurt.

His mantle. He had to get to his brow mantle. He had taken it off in a foolish display of bravado when battling his clones. He needed to get to it. That mantle would provide at least a modicum of protection against this psychic assault.

He began to crawl back the way he came. The pain was so intense his concentration was faltering. The clones ignored him as he slowly crawled through the murk. For all intents and purposes Union was out of action. He opened his eyes painfully and spotted a blue glint in the dirt a few dozen feet ahead of him. He dragged himself forward, fighting the pain every step of the way.

The Portent sank to the ground as the psychic assault set his mind on fire. He knew he'd been foolish to even try approaching the object; it had already shown itself to be dangerous. But what options were left...?

His mental defences braced and prepared to drive back the attack. He could still make out the displays on his visor, but the attack had broken his concentration; the barrage of data was meaningless. He lay still, focusing on recovery. If an opportunity arose, he needed to be ready for it.

Brian Mackenzie was on the floor, his massive form rendered powerless by the psychic attack. It felt as if ice cold needles of pain were being slid into his mind and he was powerless to resist. He could see some heroes still attacking but the clones were upon them. Gas was still pouring from the vents of the meteor, albeit more randomly now. The sphincters, although fleshy were clearly not mere organic matter. Their rubbery surface stretched as they were attacked although they did have a limit, some tears appearing in their blubber under the assault. If the thing in the meteor knew what radiation was or what the Shivan was doing to it, it showed no sign of comprehending the danger.

From the far side of the crowd, The Amber Banshee finished up with a clone that had spikes protruding from it, a sonic bolt sending it reeling over a stairwell. She could see the meteor now, the gas spiralling away from it as something tore at the vents. She saw a number of heroes laid low by the tentacle as it spewed out its electric death. In amongst them she saw a familiar shape.

“Dad!?” she gasped incredulous. She grabbed her com unit desperately. “Anyone who can reach the meteor! We have to destroy that tentacle!” She began running towards the crash site, almost ignoring the clones that jumped out in front of her.

‘Get Up’ came a voice in Brian’s mind. Something beyond him, something greater called to him. ‘It Is Hurting Me. Get Up And Destroy It.’ Brian struggled to find the energy to move. He could feel something moving through him, a compulsion, an urge, something as old as time. Placing both massive hands on the ground, feeling its comforting solidity, he pushed up, rising slowly to his feet. ’It Has No Place Here’ said the voice again. Wobbling slightly, trying not to think about the needles of pain in his skull, he placed one foot in front of the other, slowly striding towards the meteor. The tentacle with its perversely beautiful flower was close now, almost within reach. He stumbled slightly then pushed forwards, urging his aching body onwards.

“You know something,” he said from behind gritted teeth, “You’re really p***ing me off!” He swung a massive fist at the flower, knocking it backwards so that it smacked against the lip of the crater. The purple light died in an instant, the tentacle waving slightly, the delicate structure of its flower crushed by the stunning blow, its deadly assault on the mind ended. It was then that the deadly radiation that was being pumped out by the glowing Shivan hit home, its energies burning deep into the being’s core. There was a high pitched screaming that encompassed the area as the clones began to tremble and quake. They advanced on the remaining heroes, swinging wilding, attempting to get the where the meteor was being slowly poisoned. But they were clumsy, almost melting as they strived for their goal.
