Kinda rude

I assume the patch goes up with the servers at daily maitance. Given that there must have been some 8 hrs worth of accumilating warnings, which at some point must have made them decide they may have to close servers down, then is the time to plan such action not when what you perceive to be 'critical mass' of provblems has been achieved. This to me is in now way an emergency and to be frank comparisons to real life emergencies is rather rdiculous IMHO.

I think the OP needs to look up what the words inconvientient and rude mean. When he has a better understanding of basic words then and only then can this thread continue.

Cool I'll look up Ijut while am there as that seems to be what you are implying I am.

Yeah, cause it takes 1 second to realise there an error, then another second to push the auto fix button.

It prolly took an hour or two for em to realise the error, then a couple more hours to work on the fix, test the fix so it actually does work. Then coordinate the server downtime to apply said fix.

They really don't sit there and twiddle their thumbs... "oooh now Alphane is doing a Tf, lets pull em down to apply the fix".

They do I'm telling you it's all just one big conspiracy against me, this thread just so proves it , you all hate me I know you do, I'm never gonna speak to any of you ever again, I hope you all rot in h......

Dont worry... I am sure that people still complain when the servers go down during their scheduled maintenance window due to starting a timed mission or some such.

At least with a TF you can take as long as you want over it.

Posted

Rude nah, annoying? yeah, but for me it's enough to yell out loud about it. Complaining about it in the forums would be redundant.

After the patch was put on the live servers yesterday, we started to receive a few reports about the issue. It took some time to investigate, identify the issue, try to fix it and take the decision to bring the server down for an emergency maintenance.

It had to be done quick because we were entering peak hours and the amount of players affected would start to grow exponentially. Considering the situation and the severity of the issue we had no choice but to issue a 5min warning, and we only had a few minutes before that to draft an ingame warning, a launcher message and a forum post, in all 3 languages.

So considering the circumstances I think we did pretty good. Sure the message could have been a little more explanatory but not only we didn't had the time to write a longer one (and you can multiply that amount by 3 because of translation, not even counting the time needed for proofreading and correcting mistakes, again in all 3 languages), but also we didn't had any more information to give at this moment.

You had an in-game warning, it was on the launcher, and it was on the forums. We updated the thread as soon as we had information coming. Couldn't really do much more.

We did apologize for the short notice, and we try to avoid this kind of situation as much as possible.

You did in my book...
I've played MMOs for a long time and i've seen servers coming down with no warning at all in other games. Or known exploitable bugs which ruined the game and despite knowledge kepts servers up, then next day patch to fix it and roll back a days worth of playtime.

So yea... you did good!

I'd agree with that - IMHO you handled a difficult situation well, and there really isn't any reasonable ground for complaint.

You did very well. Don't let this bizzare 'complain at literally anything' attitude get to you guys

to me for them to be rude is to shut down the server with no warning and bring it back online 4 hours later without telling anyone

Personally, I think it was the best handled emergency shutdown yet. Many times in the past there have been no posts on the forum at ALL, until long after the fact; so kudos to you guys! Especially the mods who worked late to make sure the players were kept informed!

Fair enough I'm not saying it was some epic fail or anything. Still the inaccurcy of the first message I received annoys me a little. So yes the Mods did good, Being entirely unaware of the announcement thread they did at least give us about an hours warning but if they could do that on the threads (and I would possibly suggest that such 'emergency' posts be cross threaded to all topics so you make sure people see them) Why only a 5 min warning ingame, And if this has happened before why don't they already have a 'Sorry that patch didn't take we need to rollback our servers' Message. And I find the whole we had to do it in 3 languages excuse a little weak to be honest , If I'm not mistakin Pall you are French I'm sure a simple Translation isn't gonna cause you too much strees and thats 2/3 of the problem solved and if there isn't a German speaker actually in the office I'm sure you've probably got ones phone number, hey problem solved.
So while I can see the good sides to the way the Devs handled the problem I can also see room for improvement.

Why does it need to be improved? It does what its supposed to do which is warn people the servers are going down. Mind the cake could do with some icing...

They already said why it was a 5 minute warning. They were coming up to peak time and the more players that log on, the amount of players affected would increase exponentially with what is game-breaking for them.

It wasn't rude, it was a well co-ordinated fix where everyone involved could quite easily be informed about it on the boards.

The message wasn't inaccurate, it just didn't go into detail. They're 2 entirely different things, you're complaining about what was an emergency message, emergency being the key word. All the info is in the Announcements thread.

Somehow I think you'd be more annoyed if you were one of the players with trial account restrictions put on you, being unable to level etc.

Do you complain to the weather man or the Pope when it rains?

Room for improvement, yes there is always room for improvement, maybe part of the reason why there is a delay for things like this is that they have to make sure that everything makes sense as well (especially if there ISNT a french/german speaker in the builder). Online translating tools can range from being accurate to being laughable (Having translated patch notes for Tabula Rasa into French during the closed beta, it does help having an understanding of the language but even so, mistake can and DO happen).

But when server admin messages are unable to be saved (and have to be typed in manually), then this shows that the backend of the game can be improved upon (in particular for administration message).

In terms of the 5 minute warning... they do have to work with the US with these patches as well... and 5 minutes might have been all the warning that they had (imagine the message at 10am (US time) "Ok, we have worked out what the issue is, the servers are going down at 11am our time, so get ready for everything" that gives just 1 hour to do everything that they have to do (compose the warning, translate the warning, get the warning checked off for accuracy... 3 times btw all whilst still trying to hit deadlines for your own work... the CoX crew are not just CoX exclusive, as i do know that Kerensky also deals with Tabula Rasa (there goes one potential german translator)... and the others might have work with their OWN specialist games (Guild Wars, Aion, Dungeon Runners, Lineage et al...) BTW, this could also involve doing interviews for online radio, Gamespot (*check out the Aion one from Brighton* last week)

As i said, is there room for improvement...but sometimes there are just occasions when things just go wrong and they are short one person as well (like Ghostraptor being away right now).

Basically all that said and done, they did a good job considering the circumstances (and i have seen much worse happen) so just relax......

I was annoyed when the server went down (I was respecing so didn't see any warning). But once I logged into the forums and saw what had happened I was very pleased with the way it was handled....

Well done to the Red names for keeping us informed

Mind you I still demand a double XP week because of this

If it ain't broke why fix it? I'd rather they spent their time doing other more important things than composing detailed polite messages to please a minority.

^ This. I've experienced exactly the same, Neko.

Honestly be glad you got any warning at all, Alphane - a lot of MMO operators don't bother at all.

YAY: me too, I demand a double Xp weekend for having the best devs in the MMO business :P

Seriously: I think this is a bit of a storm in a teacup, and Alphane's being bludgeoned a bit here. I think the warning was spot on, delivered fine and with enough info given where I could find it. The fact that I'm overanalysing a warning sent once in a blue moon tells me there really isn't much of an issue here tbh :P

Though Double Xp cures all ills, as Mary Poppins once said.

I just wanna lose control,
And even if it takes a lifetime, to learn:
I'll learn!
