Having read the boards these past few years I've found that, as a general rule of thumb, when words like 'mate' or 'buddy' are used to begin a retort, I get the oddest feeling the person doesn't really want to be your mate or buddy.
That could be just my cynicism coming out though.

Mate, I tend to agree, mate.
On a similar note I have always presumed that a post will never get a reply unless its got some sort of personal attack slotted in there or enough vitriol to fry bacon. Unless youre in the comic and culture section where all the sedate people hang out.
Just to add to the controversy:
As it is now, if you need/want lots of "cash" in the game you need to grind/farm/play a lot of hours so: Real Life time = in-game cash
If in-game cash (be it influence or recipes) was buyable through microtransactions, something that many people seem to fear (or so it seems reading this thread), then RL money = in-game cash
Just want to ask why everybody thinks it is fair that the people that have more RL free time to play can have more in-game cash but not the people that have more RL money.
Not saying that I think it should be, just asking what you guys think of that.
On the other hand, somebody said (or implied) there was no need for respecs if you planed your character carefully. Well, I plan my characters very carefully accounting for respecs. What I mean is, in my plan for a character development through the levels I account it will be respecced one or two times at least: for example to pick the three "necessary" fitness pool powers all at once when I reach level 20 instead of playing those 20 first levels wasting 2 power picks on unuseful powers like Health and Hurdle

It's just the idea of buying a piece of software then being charged to use it's features. What if windows had said in a jolly old micropayment type way ok 1p/per file op/per Mb or what if next time you open Photoshop and want to print a photo and it comes up with a dialogue 'Thats 1280*960 by 16 million that'll be £3.50 please.' what if your mouse software charged you 0.5p per cm moved on screen plus 0.25p per click.

no, instead you pay exorbitant prices for an OS (unless its OEM admittedly in which case you have to buy , technically, a whole new PC) which, XP or Vista, DOES NOT work straight out of the box so you need to patch it, repeatedly, XP SP3 anyone, want to download that via dial up or worse again, via GPRS or 3G for you laptop or mobile users.
Want to create a spreadsheet, presetnation ? why not buy MS OFFICE at a huge cost and thn download the security patches - because as it stands out of the box a windows XP or vista machine will be hacked in less than 4 minutes on the net if unpatched and even if the OS is patched, an unpatched office opens up a whole new set of security holes (holes? more like chasms).
want to record video... buy the accessory
want to write DVDs.. buy the software and the accessory
or, you can use Linux. higher learning curve but ubuntu is pretty friendly and comes with open office - but your favourite games wont run out of the box.
Or you could go MAC. 9shudder... but htats personal preference and not a commentary on the Mac OS).
to give some detail on the example you provided, you already do. Buy windows. Buy photoshop (and you thought windows was expensive!). Buy a printer. Buy paper. Buy ink.
also, MS and several other companies have considered web based "pay as you use" services and MS is currently considerign a net based equivalent of dumb terminal OS's that get all operating procedures from a centrally located online server (project midori I think its called).
your argument is not a good one I'm afraid. I'm not saying you dont have a point, I'm just saying that you illustrated it wrong.
I suppose the counter argument to this is that for 4 years or so items like server transfers or character renames weren't available (generally) so you weren't buying software and then being charged to use parts of it. People asked for these features so they developed the system to do it automatically. I doubt they'd have ever offered the system if a GM had to get involved everytime someone wanted to make the slightest change to their character name.
Empire is right. NC actively sought our thoughts as to what we would be prepared to pay for these things. Everyone had a chance to contribute. We did. They actually undercut the prices that most people were expecting.

/Rant
I am appalled.
1. I thought new charecter slots were way overpriced, for a £10 box set that gives you 12 slots, 5 slots for a tenner is a joke and I don't even get a free game!
2. 5.99 for a server transfer. WHAT!! Wish someone would pay me that everytime I do a copy/paste. I imagine rename tokens are also grossly overpriced for the privilige of a server search and file change.
3. £6 one respec OMG what a rip off. Considering with careful planning and a little reasearch you can pretty much get by not respeccing at all, respecs could be seen as for those who have made some sort of mistake (like thpught handclap sounded fun but couldn't stand the flaming!) then NC are actually charging us for our mistakes. Now does that take the mic or what.
4. What does this mean for the policy of providing respecs at issue for those who powersets have been changed will that continue or not as it's now another way to line NC's pockets.
You see this all works on IMO one of the more explotative 'laws' of economics that no matter what it cost for the product to be produced if people want it enough they will pay rediculous amounts in comparison. That's it NC grab em by the dangley bits and squeeze see how long they put up with it, kinda short term vision isn't it.
Hey don't get me wrong some people might love it some people might hate it (like me obviously) but IMO that non of us even knew it was on the horizon is another big black mark in NC's community realtions scorebook. Consulation???, people only found out because of a mistake NC made, WOW now that is slick PR.
And as hopefuly a final stake in this commercial vampires heart. I really cannot believe after all the problems NC had with gold sellers they start selling in game rewards for cash. Oh the irony!!!!
Whats next Purple recipes £10 a pop????

Actually I disagreed in principle with Adobe's move (albeit It was introduced as an anti-counterfeiting measure) when it decided post version seven that Adobe would decide for you what was appropriate that you could scan into the software.
I didn't agree, therefore, quite simply didn't upgrade.

EITHER way it going to [censored] off someone in the long run

I think that the boat that Alphane has missed is this: What, precisely, is the in-game benefit of a respec?
Answer: None. It is the chance to correct a mistake, or rejig your toon. You do NOT gain an advantage from them. In any way. At all.
Purple recipe? Lots of in-game benefit.
Vet rewards? Depends.
But SO FAR nothing that NC have included in their micro-transactions have offered ANY sort of in-game benefit. And until they DO start offering those, there is nothing to actually complain about.

I agree with Slitty. That's REALLY close to trolling.
You see... you bought CoX... and now you pay a fee to use its features... So, enquiring minds will wonder, why the heck are you playing the game if you don't like to pay for it?

Being a bit a a forum Noob I don't really understand your reference to 'Trolling'
I don't object to paying my subs don't get me wrong but paying for ingame rewards, or a rename function is IMO over the top.

Trolling is a form of forum behaviour that can be loosely defined as "comments made specifically to incite a negative emotional response from others".
And as for paying for 'in-game rewards' what in-game reward are you paying for if you buy a server transfer? Or a character rename? Or, in-fact, a respec? What advantage is your character getting?
And as for pricings: Let's looks at the biggie, shall we? WoW.
£15.00 per character for a server transfer
£6.00 per character for a name change
£10.00 subscription fee.

[/ QUOTE ]An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion
I think you find they put £5.99 for a name change in to stop people doing this
Ted send tons and tons of hate rude tell to people. log off.
paying say 1.99 for a name change come back wth new name of sarah, either repeat the process and upset alot of people or 2nd just play mind game under a new name sarah. then if wanted to pay 1.99 again to change name to another name and star all over again
Which would you pay to harass people 1.99 or 5.99?
this is the only reason i see it at 5.99 to stop people doing that but then there are people out there that do the extreem

the word you are looking for is Advantage they all offer a benefit or no one would buy them, they are not how ever, an advantage over players that have not.
The way I see it is this:
Want a server transfer? You could have rolled your toon on the other server to start with, or you could roll a new one on that server, so NC will charge you for changing your mind.
Want a respec? Do the trials. Burn a Vet Reward one. Farm a little and buy a recipe. If NONE of those are available to you... NC will charge you for something that you CAN get without paying.
Want more character slots? Your initial game purchase covered 12 slots per server. NC will charge you for more.
Edit: Thanks, Cass_ That is the word I was looking for.

'kthx' in a nice way.
Surely as a respec, if you ran out would cost u, 20 mill then by paying £6 you have gained 20 mil , No? surely an ingame benefit.
And forsaken I'm sure I've seen someone just change there global, isn't that a better way to hide if you just want to be abusive?

[/ QUOTE ]Try to looking at this way, If you had a lower server transfer how easy would it to be to transfer a toon onto another server where you underminded the buy a slot for that server? and also as far as i can tell on the NCplay site all thing that are a "Bounus" to game are around £5.99
Plus i think there was a survery or what people said about how much they willing to pay and from what i remember for when buy new slots was talked about it was around £5.99 for one and a bunch for £20
