Why does my Fire Blaster go down in flames?

Ok, I realise that Blasters do a lot of damage and can draw a lot of aggro but ... my fire/fire blaster is currently attracting WAY too much heat!

My Ice/Ice Blaster gets a few problems but, with the various holds, she can usually fend off trouble till the rest of the team come to her aid.

My old Assault Rifle/Electric Blaster (before I deleted him) never seemed to have any trouble at all, anything that came at him usually got knocked away again by a well placed grenade.

I realise that the two fire sets are very AoE intensive as opposed to the single target style Ice/Ice or the more mixed bag of the Rifle. I also realise that Fire is supposed to be one of the higher damage sets. Both of these factors mean he is obviously going to draw more aggro than some others.

I knew darn well that soloing would be out of the question with him but I did expect him to be more survivable in teams
however, I just cannot find a play style for him to keep him alive. The only reliable one is teaming with an UBER Tank who can keep the aggro from me but they are few and far between.

So anyone got any advice on how to keep a Fire/Fire blaster from having his goose cooked?

Kill them before they kill you.

Also, teaming with spport characters is good, and if you really want survivability you might want to pick up aid self.

bushbaby regularly teams with me as a fire/fire blaster, whilst I am an Ice/Trick Arrow Controller. I find the debuffs, slows and holds/knockdowns from both those sets allow her to fire off attacks with impunity.

Case in point - I took Aid Other as a powerpool at level 24, yet I think I've only used it once on her for the past 3 levels.

So, a single controller can be enough to save your bacon.

If you're taking too much heat for your liking in a team then stick to single target attacks and wait until aggro has been spread around before you launch AoEs.

And never, ever take the alpha in a 3+ team.

Get yourself a nice friendly Tank and 'troller and pretty much all your worries will just melt away.

Tank gets a nice little herd going, 'troller locks them all down in a tightly packed group, they you hurl AoE's like your life depended on it.

You just need to learn to wait for tanks etc to have fully consolidated aggro before deciding to show just how much you can hurt stuff, otherwise you'll be planting faces a whole lot.

(although after lvl 47 thats actually a viable tactic thanks to Rise of the Phoenix)

I think you see the point, utility and damage are inversely proportional (Plight mode: elec has more utility and damage than you will ever need, it is by far the best PvE blaster). I think the others covered it, get a tank that can handle the aggro (this means auras and slotted taunt(s), not just wacking things randomly). Know when the mob is ready and BABLAAAAAAAMMMMM!!!!1oneeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

other than this fire is totally gimped (needs more damage), have fun

Have you tried fire/ice? You get the controllery protection in your secondary and still keep most of the AoE goodness from your primary.

The mini ice slick is worth its weight in gold. My 26 fire/ice has been soloing on invincible for a while and he tears through stuff just because you can herd around a corner onto your ice, giving you masses of protection and tightly packing the mobs for your aim+buildup barrage of death.

The advice I would give has been given but is worth emphasising a good tank is a fire blasters best mate in my experience and tbh vice versa, though that experience has been from the PoV of the Tanker as I never could quite do Fire Blasters without a million faceplants

Given my Tankers perspective advice and just because I feel it rates it...

The portion of the post that needs to be quoted for truth.

Fire Blasters really should be the ones cleanin up the mob of minions with AoEs once everyone has been properly aggroed. Just hang back until the situation has begun before going in.

A fire Blaster who doesn't use Rain of Fire in teams ( except on immobbed mobs ) and waits for the aggro to consolidate before using AoEs is a tankers best friend.

Rain of Fire is a power to use when soloing.

[/ QUOTE ]Not necessarily, I find that at low levels, it's great to play witha fire/dev who uses the RoF+'trops combo, it's as close as you get to an AoE mez for a blaster.

You didn't say how large the team was that you're playing in but as a blaster you should never ever ever ever

ever

take the alpha strike for a large team. You won't survive it.

That means letting the tanks or scrappers getting in there first and taking the aggro. Or at least letting a controller lock the mobs down first. If you aggro a large group of mobs who are free to target you, you will most likely die.

On the other hand, debt for a blaster is nothing to be too worried about, it's the penalty you pay for being so powerful

My fire blaster doesnt have RoF, but thats for personal reasons (ie i just dont like it) but i dont find myself dying that much, but i cant solo for love nor money, wether this is the case with blasters as a whole im not sure

That depends on level, build, player skill, what you want to solo and "minimum acceptable solo speed/difficulty".

It's more than a mez, it's more like an aoe disorient/hold really.

My glue arrows, snow storms and tar patch all have 3 slow SO's and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hardcore speed debuffage + rain = win. I'm a big fan of blasters with rains when I'm defending and my fire/ice blaster is going the same way with 3 slow SO shiver if I ever get him to 28.

Thanks for all the useful comments there folks.

To be honest I think the build on the toon is a bit gimped and I need to respec him. Unfortuntely he is only level15 and so the respec is a LOOOONG way off. I was going to chuck him and re-do from start but that seemed a bit defeatist.

Luckily I have inf available and so I have kitted him ot in DOs a lot earlier than I normally would and he is at least "playable" now until I can get him to 24 and the Terra Volta respec trial.

Also, in response to Hawkblaze comment on Soloing. I dont think its a general Blaster thing as my Ice/Ice Blaster can solo fine with her various holds and slows. Also, before I deleted him my Assault Rifle/Electric was fine on his own (although lightning field was a bit of an aggro magnet! )
