Looking for "mature" SG

Without any offence to the much valued and liked younger players, I am looking to find a SG with a "mature" membership. I.e. I dont have the reactions of a cat after a gallon of strong coffee (although I am a fairly good player of course ) and I dont consider it a race to lvl 50.

And I can debate free will vs. determinism and the ethics of Utilitarianism and Kant (this however, would not be a requirement of the SG).

Hi Cognito,
You could join one of the SGs in the 1AT coalition, there is a good mix of young and old players, plenty of good teaming and great fun too.

He's right, the 1AT Coalition is a great place to be. Also, Utilitarianism is for chumps who think they can make decisions based on their ability to predict the future. Deontological thinking is teh uber.

Thinking that is based on whether an action is intrisically right or wrong eh? That'll do me. To an extent.

By the way OP, seeing as you have an interest in philosophy. Have you heard Keith Ward speak? I saw him recently and he is a chump I'm afraid to say.

BTW, I'm only 17 Young people can be intelligetn (to an extent ) to!

Whilst I accept that prediction of the future is a) impossible in any absolute sense (due to Heisenbergian theory if nothing else) and b) It is a necessity for Utilitarianism, one must take into account that probability is a real science and can be the foundation block of a good ethical basis in Utalitarianism. The problem is rather the difficulty in quantifying "good" and calculating this into probability.

Put that in your pipe and Smerk it.

I'll join your SG any day - whats it called?

Hi Cognito, here is a list of some of the Sgs in the coalition:

Precision Rangers - Blasters
Union Overlords - Controllers
Team G.B.H. - Scrappers
SNHS - Defenders
Armoured Core - Tanks

these and a few others form what is called the 1AT coalition. I'm sure you'll be welcome in any of them, just drop a post in the appropriate thread, ie: Precision Rangers or Union Overlords etc.

I hope this helps.

Actually, "good" can be reasonably modelled by a discrete Poisson-distributed random variable...

No Rogue, Poisson like Mr. Siméon-Denis Poisson (1781-1840). Might want to Google him... or not

.... and the ethics of Utilitarianism...

I can only assume that if u are looking for "the greatest happiness for the greatest number" then the coalition is for you!

I fail to see how "good" can be quatified in any way other than subjectively (although in the health field attempts have be made to have standardised semi strutured rating scales). Please enlighten me.

And tell me when to shout out to join.

Well then I fail to see the point of making a so called 'good' action if it is not intrinsically good for then what purpose does it serve that is not ultimately futile?

Posted

I may have wandered off from Strict Utalitarianism.

The greatest good (i.e. happiness) for the greatest many.

Is the calculation for relative "goodness" of action / inaction.

I am not sure by strict application of this prinicple any action / inaction is inherently good?

Ye gods, we need a philosophy strand.

And I still need to know how to join SG. I am tempted to start a philosopher heroes (as opposed to Plato's Philosopher kings) one now...

I'd join that SG! Go for it.

Incidentally, a philosophy strand would also be very welcome... the greatest good for me at least

When I read the name of the post I thought "OMG, hasn't this been censored yet!". But it turn out to be an entirely mature thread, not a "mature" one as the title suggests.

Well, I've been thinking about this problem for a while - an adults' supergroup, that is, not utilitarianism.

The trouble is that I don't think that a supergroup is the answer; people have all sorts of other reasons for joining different supergroups and people also often have lots of characters who would fill up the group quickly if it worked well, so you'd find yourself with a coalition...

Also, frankly, the 1AT coalition is pretty good. There's a certain amount of "OMG biouxbies" on the coalition channel, but there are also a lot of perfectly nice people.

Wanting to talk to adults is a function of the player, not the character, so I'd suggest a global chat channel; however, the trouble with that is it's quite easy to use up your five channels. I'm already on Global, the LJ channel, two badge channels (and now it's too late to roll them into one non-server-specific one), and the Taskforce channel - now I could lose the last one, which no-one uses, but I'd still like to pretend to myself that people will, and I can see how other people may well just have five already which they need all of.

A "Literari" channel would need sufficient interest and sufficient trustworthy people to be elitist snobs with operator powers. I can't see that happening...

I thought exactly the same thing as Rogue when I read that... Does that mean I am a teenager locked inside a thirty year old's body ? or just that I am an idiot ?

personally I happy to go for a little from column A, and a little from column B...
